Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgical Education: Theorising an Emerging Domain delineates surgical (as opposed to medical) education as a new and emerging field of academic enquiry. This reflects profound changes in healthcare training and practice on an international basis. As such, this book introduces, examines and explores the contribution of selected concepts and theories to surgical learning and practice. The first four chapters consider core facets of surgical education, such as simulation, while subsequent chapters take a key idea, often well known in another field, and examine its relevance to surgical education. Of course, performing invasive procedures is no longer the exclusive preserve of ‘traditional’ surgeons. Boundaries between surgery and the interventional specialties (radiology, cardiology, intensive care) are becoming increasingly blurred, especially as technology continues to expand. Changing work patterns and explosive technological development mark this out as a major growth area. New educational approaches (e.g. the use of simulation) are emerging. And all clinical practice is a team activity, where clinicians from many specialties (medicine, nursing, allied professions) come together with shared goals. For all the above groups, and their patients, education (teaching, training, learning and assessment) is of crucial importance. Yet the unique characteristics of surgical education have not previously been addressed from an educational perspective, nor have its possibilities as a new research domain been mapped. The domain needs to be theorised and its epistemological foundations established. There is thus both a need and a market for a definitive work in this area, aimed at surgeons, other clinicians, non-clinicians, educators, and others interested in this new domain.

Book Cultivating a Thinking Surgeon

Download or read book Cultivating a Thinking Surgeon written by Linda de Cossart, and published by tfm Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a carefully argued approach to the postgraduate preparation of surgeons and doctors. At a time when surgical/medical education is undergoing profound change this text will prove an invaluable resource for those both reorganizing teaching programmes and those working with learning surgeons/doctors. It emphasizes what is involved in learning to be a surgeon and/or doctor who can engage in professional conduct and exercise professional judgement, as opposed to being trained in surgical/medical activities in order to demonstrate the behaviour expected by assessors. It provides many examples and ideas which have been developed and refined over the past three years in partnership with a wide range of working surgeons and doctors in practical settings and in reflective seminars. The authors have together brought to the production of this book a unique combination of a practising surgeon who is dedicated to the development of excellence in surgical practice, and a practising teacher educator who is dedicated to developing expertise in educational practice, particularly in clinical settings.

Book Appropriate Surgical Education for Countries with Limited Resources Cognitive Apprenticeship

Download or read book Appropriate Surgical Education for Countries with Limited Resources Cognitive Apprenticeship written by Lowell Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " "Appropriate surgical education for Countries with limited resources"Cognitive Apprenticeship. The Why, When and How of surgical practiceThe role of surgical education in the prevention and management of surgical disorders continues to be an important subject for study, as we struggle in developing countries, to meet the growing demands, in the absence of sufficient resources, for the provision of adequate surgical services. Persons living in remote areas which are also undeveloped and without modern medical facilities, are at risk of significant disruption of their lives and increased morbidity and mortality.Correction of this problem requires the identification and implementation of educational programs and curricula which provide training and experience which can be delivered in communities which are at remote locations and have limited resources. This title "Appropriate surgical education for countries with limited resources", reflects the need for the identification, retention and development of methods of surgical practice and education, that will ensure acceptable levels of care for surgical patients living in remote communities or communities with limited resources, who have no access to current gold standards of care. The main objectives of this thesis are to share information and document educational activities that will have a significant impact on the global burden of surgical disease, and also to promote an approach to surgical care, which is affordable and can be applied in varying ways to achieve good outcomes, depending on local circumstances. " Prevention and management of surgical disorders", will be the theme of this review of current surgical educational practices and the options for care. The final chapter of this thesis begins with a list of questions for surgeons practicing in remote communities, with limited resources and restricted access to the current standards of care established in university teaching centers.I then review the published descriptions of programs and recommendations for improving surgical services to developing countries. The chapter ends with a template for self assessment of surgeons who wish to provide evidence of competence in the provision of essential surgical services in resource limited communities, and justification for continuation of medico-legal insurance coverage for their surgical services. It also serves as a guide for the content of training and revalidation programs required for such surgeons. With this Thesis, I verify, and illustrate the importance of surgical training programs built on a foundation of cognitive apprenticeship, consistent with the Applied Clinical surgery course designs, Animal Laboratory Competency based training programs , Health Technology Assessments and Validation Protocols advocated in this Thesis." --

Book Revisiting Surgical Skill Acquisition

Download or read book Revisiting Surgical Skill Acquisition written by Vaikunthan Rajaratnam Frcs and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-12-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Revisiting Surgical Skill Acquisition: Mental Simulation and Deliberate Practice," Vaikunthan Rajaratnam, an internationally accredited hand surgeon, medical educator, and instructional designer, presents a comprehensive and groundbreaking work that reshapes the landscape of surgical education and skill development. The book, a testament to Rajaratnam's 40 years of academic and clinical experience, delves into the intricate processes of learning and mastering surgical skills, offering a rich blend of theory and practice that caters to both novices and experienced surgeons. At its core, the book is structured into twelve insightful chapters, each dissecting a specific aspect of surgical education. Beginning with a historical overview of surgical training, the book explores the evolution from traditional apprenticeship models to more structured, competency-based medical education (CBME) frameworks. Rajaratnam critically analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of these frameworks, emphasizing the need for standardization, objectivity, and a focus on patient safety. A notable highlight is the in-depth exploration of mental simulation and deliberate practice. The author skillfully intertwines theories such as Functional Equivalence, Motor Learning, and Bandura's Social Learning with practical surgical training. He provides a compelling argument for the role of mental practice and motor imagery in enhancing psychomotor skills, a relatively uncharted territory in surgical education. Chapters dedicated to technological innovations in surgical education, such as AI and machine learning, virtual reality, and gamification, reflect Rajaratnam's forward-thinking approach. These sections not only discuss current applications but also ponder the ethical implications and future potential of these technologies in reshaping surgical training. The book doesn't shy away from addressing the psychological aspects of surgical training, acknowledging the challenges of stress, burnout, and the need for resilience and mental well-being among surgeons. It offers practical strategies for coping and building psychological capital, underscoring the importance of a supportive educational environment. Rajaratnam extends his discourse to global perspectives, examining diverse surgical training models, international collaborations, and the necessity for cultural sensitivity in surgery. This global outlook is particularly relevant in his discussions on ethical considerations in surgical training and practice, where he navigates complex dilemmas like patient autonomy, resource allocation, and end-of-life care. "Revisiting Surgical Skill Acquisition" culminates in a visionary chapter on the future of surgical education, anticipating emerging trends like personalized medicine, telemedicine, and the continuous evolution of healthcare models. The book closes with a series of case studies, providing real-world examples of successful programs and best practices in surgical education. This work is not only an academic treasure but also a practical guide for surgeons, educators, and students. It serves as a call to action for a holistic, innovative, and ethical approach to surgical training, one that embraces technology, prioritizes patient-centered care, and fosters continuous learning and adaptability. Rajaratnam's book is a must-read for anyone committed to the advancement of surgical education and the cultivation of the next generation of skilled, compassionate surgeons.
