Book Garner s Modern American Usage

Download or read book Garner s Modern American Usage written by Bryan Garner and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009-07-28 with total page 1007 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since first appearing in 1998, Garner's Modern American Usage has established itself as the preeminent guide to the effective use of the English language. Brimming with witty, erudite essays on troublesome words and phrases, GMAU authoritatively shows how to avoid the countless pitfalls that await unwary writers and speakers whether the issues relate to grammar, punctuation, word choice, or pronunciation. An exciting new feature of this third edition is Garner's Language-Change Index, which registers where each disputed usage in modern English falls on a five-stage continuum from nonacceptability (to the language community as a whole) to acceptability, giving the book a consistent standard throughout. GMAU is the first usage guide ever to incorporate such a language-change index. The judgments are based both on Garner's own original research in linguistic corpora and on his analysis of hundreds of earlier studies. Another first in this edition is the panel of critical readers: 120-plus commentators who have helped Garner reassess and update the text, so that every page has been improved. Bryan A. Garner is a writer, grammarian, lexicographer, teacher, and lawyer. He has written professionally about English usage for more than 28 years, and his work has achieved widespread renown. David Foster Wallace proclaimed that Bryan Garner is a genius and William Safire called the book excellent. In fact, due to the strength of his work on GMAU, Garner was the grammarian asked to write the grammar-and-usage chapter for the venerable Chicago Manual of Style. His advice on language matters is second to none.

Book Loss and What it Taught Me About Living

Download or read book Loss and What it Taught Me About Living written by Tracey Corbett-Lynch and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder, cancer, Covid-19, an asthma attack and heart attacks: Tracey Corbett-Lynch has encountered loss in all its guises and has had to learn how to cope with life at its most difficult and overwhelming. In Loss and What It Taught Me About Living, Tracey describes these tragic losses, their impact on her and how she learnt to live alongside them with strength and grace. She recounts how she coped when it all seemed too much to bear and looks at how we can emerge from suffering forever changed by loss but filled with optimism. No two grief journeys are the same, but, as Tracey discovered, some of the stations along the route are. Her moving and uplifting story will offer comfort, practical advice and a ray of hope to anyone suffering their own loss, whatever that might be.

Book Handbook of Social Support and the Family

Download or read book Handbook of Social Support and the Family written by Gregory R. Pierce and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While insights sometimes are slow in coming, they often seem obvious when they finally arrive. This handbook is an outcome of the insight that the topics of social support and the family are very closely linked. Obvious as this might seem, the fact remains that the literatures dealing with social support and the family have been deceptively separate and distinct. For example, work on social support began in the 1970s with the accumulation of evidence that social ties and social integration play important roles in health and personal adjustment. Even though family members are often the key social supporters of individuals, relatively little re search of social support was targeted on family interactions as a path to specifying supporter processes. It is now recognized that one of the most important features of the family is its role in providing the individual with a source of support and acceptance. Fortunately, in recen t years, the distinctness and separateness of the fields of social support and the family have blurred. This handbook provides the first collation and integration of social support and family research. This integration calls for specifying processes (such as the cognitions associated with poor support availability and unrewarding faIllily constellations) and factors (such as cultural differences in family life and support provision) that are pertinent to integration.

Book Applied Family Law in Islamic Courts

Download or read book Applied Family Law in Islamic Courts written by Nahda Shehada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written from an ethnographic perspective, this book investigates the socio-legal aspects of Islamic jurisprudence in Gaza-Palestine. It examines the way judges, lawyers and litigants operate with respect to the law and with each other, particularly given their different positions in the power structure within the court and within society at large. The book aims at elucidating ambivalences in the codified statutes that allow the actors to find practical solutions to their (often) legally unresolved problems and to manipulate the law. The book demonstrates that present-day judges are not only confronted with novel questions they have to find an answer to, but, perhaps more importantly, they are confronted with contradictions between the letter of codified law and their own notions of justice. The author reminds us that these notions of justice should not be set a priori; they are socially constructed in particular time and space. Making a substantial contribution to a number of theoretical debates on family law and gender, the book will appeal to both academic and non-academic readers alike.
