Download or read book The Tea Party Papers Volume II written by Bill Miller and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally buttressed with Nature's bounty, fortified with Nature's gifts, testifying to Nature's truth we must be ready to take a leap in faith. The hardest leap of faith to believe in; is a leap of faith in each other, in the individual. In the end the only way a government of the Individuals, by the Individuals for the Individual can long endure on the face of the Earth. Faith in God alone cannot suffice for such a government to work. It is the most necessary prerequisite for such a government to exist. But it cannot retain it cannot nurture it because the government is a covenant a pact made between God and the individual. If we lose faith in the individual we break the sacred pact. Being granted so many gifts the last act is in our own hands we are the City on the Hill when we believe we are the City on the Hill. When we act the part we are the Light of the world and the Inspiration to the World. It is really simple, if enough individuals carry out this leap of faith, a new critical mass will be reached, and a miracle will turn the tide in our affairs once more and we like the patriots of old will once again fulfill our own self-actualization process and bequeath to our posterity the ability and responsibility to reach their own.

Download or read book The Students of Sherman Indian School written by Diana Meyers Bahr and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sherman Indian High School, as it is known today, began in 1892 as Perris Indian School on eighty acres south of Riverside, California, with nine students. Its mission, like that of other off-reservation Indian boarding schools, was to "civilize" Indian children, which meant stripping them of their Native culture and giving them vocational training. Today, the school on Magnolia Avenue in Riverside serves 350 students from 68 tribes, and its curricula are designed to both preserve Native languages and traditions and prepare students for life and work in mainstream American society. This book offers the first full history of Sherman Indian School’s 100-plus years, a history that reflects federal Indian education policy since the late nineteenth century. Sherman Institute's historical trajectory features the abuse and exploitation familiar from other accounts of life at Indian boarding schools—children punished and humiliated for maintaining Native ways and put to work as manual laborers. But this book also brings to light the ways Native children managed to maintain their dignity, benefited from interacting with students from other tribes, and often even expressed appreciation for the experiences at Sherman. Alternating periods of assimilation and self-determination form a critical part of the story Diana Meyers Bahr tells, but her interpretation of the students’ complex experiences is more subtle than that. From the accounts of students, educators, and administrators over the years, Bahr draws a picture of Sherman students successfully navigating a complicated middle course between total assimilation and total rejection of white education. The ambivalence of such a middle way has meant confronting painful moral choices—and ultimately it has deepened students’ appreciation for the diverse cultures of Indian America and heightened their awareness of their own tribal identity. The ramifications can be seen in today's Sherman Indian High School, a repository of the living history so deftly and thoroughly chronicled here.

Download or read book Seven Aunts written by Staci Lola Drouillard and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part memoir, part cultural history, these memories of seven aunts holding home and family together tell a crucial, often overlooked story of women of the twentieth century They were German and English, Anishinaabe and French, born in the north woods and Midwestern farm country. They moved again and again, and they fought for each other when men turned mean, when money ran out, when babies—and there were so many—added more trouble but even more love. These are the aunties: Faye, who lived in California, and Lila, who lived just down the street; Doreen, who took on the bullies taunting her “mixed-blood” brothers and sisters; Gloria, who raised six children (no thanks to all of her “stupid husbands”); Betty, who left a marriage of indenture to a misogynistic southerner to find love and acceptance with a Norwegian logger; and Carol and Diane, who broke the warped molds of their own upbringing. From the fabric of these women’s lives, Staci Lola Drouillard stitches a colorful quilt, its brightly patterned pieces as different as her aunties, yet alike in their warmth and spirit and resilience, their persistence in speaking for their generation. Seven Aunts is an inspired patchwork of memoir and reminiscence, poetry, testimony, love letters, and family lore. In this multifaceted, unconventional portrait, Drouillard summons ways of life largely lost to history, even as the possibilities created by these women live on. Unfolding against a personal view of the settler invasion of the Midwest by men who farmed and logged, fished and hunted and mined, it reveals the true heart and soul of that history: the lives of the women who held together family, home, and community—women who defied expectations and overwhelming odds to make a place in the world for the next generation.

Download or read book The Vision of a Mother s Heart written by Katherine Purdy and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vision of a Mother's Heart is the story of Isabel Greene, an ordinary ten-year-old girl from an ordinary southern family that is living off the land in the 1920s. They are hardworking, God-honoring, fun-loving people who are considered poor by some but think of themselves as quite happy. Isabel's Mama teaches her the joys of cooking, sewing, doing laundry, and taking care of children, while always turning each chore into a time of singing and laughter and striving to instruct her children in the truth by planting seeds of faith in their hearts. When tragedy strikes, life drastically changes for the Greene family. Although the family attempts to press on, they are faced with further calamity when a fire ravages their home. Despite their escape, they are left with difficult questions: Where is God in tragedy and suffering? Why does He allow people to face hardships when all they want to do is honor Him? What if their worst fear-separation from one another-is realized? Can the Greene family trust God when everything around them is falling apart? The Vision of a Mother's Heart was inspired by the author's grandmother, Isabel. Her mother's life, love, and instruction sewed seeds of faith in the hearts of her children that now have been passed to the next generation. The story weaves a heartwarming tale that will leave you thinking about the long-term impact of your everyday decisions.
