Book excerpt: The Berlin Wall is arguably the most prominent symbol of the Cold War era. Its construction in 1961 and its dismantling in 1989 are broadly understood as pivotal moments in the history of the last century. In A Wall of Our Own, Paul M. Farber traces the Berlin Wall as a site of pilgrimage for American artists, writers, and activists. During the Cold War and in the shadow of the Wall, figures such as Leonard Freed, Angela Davis, Shinkichi Tajiri, and Audre Lorde weighed the possibilities and limits of American democracy. All were sparked by their first encounters with the Wall, incorporated their reflections in books and artworks directed toward the geopolitics of division in the United States, and considered divided Germany as a site of intersection between art and activism over the respective courses of their careers. Departing from the well-known stories of Americans seeking post–World War II Paris for their own self-imposed exile or traveling the open road of the domestic interstate highway system, Farber reveals the divided city of Berlin as another destination for Americans seeking a critical distance. By analyzing the experiences and cultural creations of "American Berliner" artists and activists, Farber offers a new way to view not only the Wall itself but also how the Cold War still structures our thinking about freedom, repression, and artistic resistance on a global scale.

Book The Cambridge Companion to the Literature of Berlin

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to the Literature of Berlin written by Andrew J. Webber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by international specialists in the literature of Berlin provides a lively and stimulating account of writing in and about the city in the modern period. The first eight chapters chart key chronological developments from 1750 to the present day, while subsequent chapters focus on Berlin drama and poetry in the twentieth century and explore a set of key identity questions: ethnicity/migration, gender (writing by women), and sexuality (queer writing). Each chapter provides an informative overview along with closer readings of exemplary texts. The volume is designed to be accessible for readers seeking an introduction to the literature of Berlin, while also providing new perspectives for those already familiar with the topic. With a particular focus on the turbulent twentieth century, the account of Berlin's literary production is set against broader cultural and political developments in one of the most fascinating of global cities.

Book Notmsparker s Second Berlin Companion

This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying Berlin is like reading a dictionary: while all that you need is a single definition, once you’ve opened the volume, hours or days later you might still find yourself happily hopping from one entry to another. In fact, to anyone prepared to ask questions and look closer, Berlin soon grows to feel like a whole dictionary section at the state library. No wonder then it proved to be an impossible task to fit all the historical facts and anecdotes gathered over several years of writing my Kreuzberged blog into just one volume. So for all those who enjoyed the first book, Notmsparker’s Berlin Companion or I didn’t know that about Berlin, and those who never tire of discovering and learning new, lesser-known facts from this city’s past, here is another installment of curious stories and forgotten tales straight from the treasure trove of your Berlin Companion.

Book In the Name of the People Perpetrators of Genocide in the Reflection of Their Post War Prosecution in West Germany

Download or read book In the Name of the People Perpetrators of Genocide in the Reflection of Their Post War Prosecution in West Germany written by Dick De Mildt and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Name of the People explores the profile of the perpetrators of Nazi genocide as reflected in postwar German trial sentences. It investigates their social background, their `route to crime', and their role in the Nazi extermination apparatus. In addition, it studies the postwar prosecution of these genocidal criminals in West Germany. It describes and analyses the obstacles, `bottlenecks', and omissions in the prosecuting policies and presents their statistical record. It examines the way in which postwar German courts dealt with these criminals by an in-depth study of the trial sentences against two specific groups of genocidal perpetrators: the `Euthanasia' and `Aktion Reinhard' killers. Through a scrutiny of the argumentation of the various courts' sentences in these cases, it presents a detailed picture of the grounds for acquittal, conviction and punishment. It discusses the controversial differentiation of `murder' and `complicity in murder' with regard to these genocidal perpetrators and highlights the ways in which the courts handled complicated questions, such as acting under superior orders, duress, and coercion. The study is intended for a readership consisting of historians, sociologists, criminologists, legal experts and others interested in the `fieldworkers' and modus operandi of the Nazi genocide and Germany's postwar judicial reaction to it.
