Book Bent Shaped Liquid Crystals

Download or read book Bent Shaped Liquid Crystals written by Hideo Takezoe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bent-Shaped Liquid Crystals: Structures and Physical Properties provides insight into the latest developments in the research on liquid crystals formed by bent-shaped mesogens. After a historical introduction, the expert authors discuss different kinds of mesophase structures formed by bent-shaped molecules. This book devotes the majority of its pages to physical properties such as polar switching, optics and non-linear optics, and behavior in restricted geometries. However, as chemistry is often highly relevant to the emergence of new phases, particularly with reflection symmetry breaking, it also involves a broad spectrum of interesting chemistry viewpoints.

Book Nanostructures Of Bent Shaped And Polar Liquid Crystals

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phases of matter between isotropic liquid and well-ordered crystalline solid phases are known as liquid crystal phases. The molecular architecture, which includes structure, polarity, and topology, influences the liquid crystal phases formed by mesomorphic materials. The most common and widely studied liquid crystal phase is the nematic phase formed by rod-like molecules. The molecules in this phase have only orientational order, which means they prefer to align along a single axis while their positions are random addition they do not have polarity. Flexible bent-shape molecules where an odd number of methylene groups connect two rigid arms exhibit twist-bend nematic (N_TB)" phase. In the N_TB phase, the molecules have a heliconical structure with a 10 nm range pich. Rigid achiral bent-shape materials typically show polar and chiral smectic structures because tilted and polar packing makes each smectic layer chiral. Lastly, rod-shaped molecules with large (about 10 Debye) dipole moments form the ferroelectric nematic phase predicted by Max Born in 1916 but experimentally observed only a few years ago. In my dissertation, I will describe various studies of the nanostructure of different flexibly bent-core liquid crystal materials exhibiting the N_TB Phase, structures of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric smectic phases of rigid bent-shape materials, and multiple ferroelectric nematic phases of a highly polar rod-shape substance.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Bent shaped Liquid Crystal

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Bent shaped Liquid Crystal written by Kala a/p Shanku Pillay and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of liquid crystal is relatively new area of chemistry, and therefore generates a large frontier of research. The ability of being able to produce high resolution display screens for use in televisions or laptop computers with a very low power consumption, has revolutionised the technological market for this product. As a result of the success of the knowledge already known about liquid crystals and their properties, and their as yet unexplored potential, it is not suprising that there is an extremely large amount of research into the area. In relation to this, in this project, a five ring bent-shaped liquid crystal, which is relatively new compound in liquid crystalline phase, was synthesized using several organic synthesis methods, such as, Diazonium coupling reaction, Williamson ether synthesis, hydrolysis and reaction with resorcinol. The compounds synthesized were characterized through FTIR analysis, melting point, and its physical apperances. Other than that, the percent yield for each compound also have been calculated. The compound synthesized in first step, ethyl4-4-(hydroxyphenylazo)benzoate was a red color solid with melting point at 235 C and the percent yield was 52.07%. In second step 3.542 grams of Ethyl-4-(4-hexadecanoxyphenylazo)benzoate which orange in color with melting point of 135 C was obtained. The percent yield from the reaction was 42.11%. The third compound synthesized was yellow color solid with melting point of 280-290 C and the final compound was 1,3-Phenelyne bis[4-(4-hexadecanoxyphenylazo)benzoate], a pale yellow color solid with melting point at range of 130-135 C was obtained.

Book Bent Core Liquid Crystals

Download or read book Bent Core Liquid Crystals written by Irina Carlescu and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bent-core (BC) molecules became an attractive liquid crystal class due to their potential use in smart displays and photonic devices. In contrast to calamitic mesogens, bent-shaped mesogens are self-organized superstructures with remarkable properties, given the presence of polar order in mesophases, although the molecules themselves are not chiral. A particular interest represents the biaxial nematic liquid crystal materials that are used in display technology and allow a faster switching response, compared to calamitic liquid crystals, with considerably reduced costs. This chapter briefly reviews the bent-core liquid crystals with three different core units in the structure: (1) 2,5-disubstituted oxadiazole, (2) 1,3-disubstituted benzene, and (3) 2,7-disubstituted naphthalene. To the central bent units (BUs) containing reactive functional groups of phenolic or aminic type, various mesogenic groups are symmetrically or asymmetrically connected, via esterification or condensation reactions. The obtained compounds showed biaxial nematic and/or smectic mesophases with high transition temperatures in the case of oxadiazole derivatives or cholesteric and banana-type mesophases with lower transition temperatures in the case of benzene and naphthalene derivatives.

Book Unconventional Nematic Liquid Crystals

Download or read book Unconventional Nematic Liquid Crystals written by Paladugu Sathyanarayana and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few years, bent-core liquid crystals have created immense interest in the scientific community because they show several new liquid crystalline phases along with some known phases of calamitic liquid crystals. Concomitantly efforts are made to synthesize liquid crystals with unconventional shapes like, V, W, T etc. Many physical properties of these new liquid crystals are not yet understood. This book is an attempt to understand the structure-property correlation of some unconventional nematic liquid crystals. We have presented some introduction and experimental techniques to measure various physical properties of those unconventional liquid crystals in the first two chapters. In the subsequent chapters we discuss physical properties of liquid crystal mixture of rod-like and bent-core molecules, pure bent-core molecules, hockey stick shaped (asymmetric bent-core) and T-shaped molecules. Finally we discuss flexoelectric properties in the last chapter.
