Book Bent Larsen s Best Games

Download or read book Bent Larsen s Best Games written by Bent Larsen and published by New In Chess. This book was released on 2015-01-10 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bent Larsen (1935-2010) was one of the greatest fighters chess has ever seen. In his rich career the great Dane defeated all World Champions from Botvinnik to Karpov. He was a Candidate for the World Championship four times and became one of the most successful tournament players of his time. His uncompromising style and his unorthodox thinking made him popular with chess players all around the globe. In 1967/1968 Larsen won five international elite events in a row, a truly spectacular achievement. His successes were such that Bobby Fischer let him play first board in the legendary match Soviet Union vs. the World in 1970 in Belgrade. Bent Larsen also was a highly original chess writer and an extremely productive chess journalist. Not surprisingly the first chess book that Magnus Carlsen ever studied was written by the strongest Scandinavian player before him. This collection brings together more than 120 of Bent Larsen’s best games, annotated by himself. His comments are lucid, to the point, instructive and humorous. Together, these games are a tribute to his genius and a continuous joy to read and play through. ,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Initially things looked gloomy for Bobby Fischer. Because he had refused to participate in the 1969 US Championship, he had missed his chance to qualify for the 1970 Interzonal Tournament in Palma de Mallorca. Only when another American, Pal Benko, withdrew in his favour, and after the officials were willing to bend the rules, could Bobby enter the contest. And begin his phenomenal run that would end with the Match of the Century in Reykjavik against World Champion Boris Spassky. ... Jan Timman chronicles the full story of Fischer's sensational run and takes a fresh look at the games. The annotations are in the author's trademark lucid style, that happy mix of colourful background information and sharp, crystal-clear explanations."--Back cover.

Download or read book Zoom 001 written by Bent Larsen and published by Ishi Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the groundbreaking cult classic by the Legendary Grandmaster Bent Larsen and the noted openings theoretician Steffen Zeuthen. Zoom 001 stands for Zero Hour for Operative Opening models. The principal idea behind Zoom 001 is the creation of "pattern knowledge" of typical middle game/endgame structures-one of a grandmaster's essential qualities-cultivated through the use of the Grunfeld and Catalan openings. Using twenty modern Grandmasters' games, the authors show how these structures typically arise. Included are games by Andersson, Botvinnik, Fischer, Korchnoi, and of course Larsen. By using complete games instead of variations that might be outdated by the next tournament, Larsen and Zeuthen demonstrate that pattern recognition is a timeless skill. By recognizing these typical patterns, you will not only gain a feel for the position, but will be able to effectively form a game plan that will allow you to carry you to won positions.

Book The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal

Download or read book The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal written by Mikhail Tal and published by Everyman Chess. This book was released on 1997-07-01 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mikhail Tal, the 'magician from Riga,' was the greatest attacking World Champion of them all, and this enchanting autobiography chronicles his extraordinary career with charm and humor. Dazzling games are interspersed throughout with anecdotes and witty self-interviews, and in typically objective fashion he related both the downs and ups of his encounters. An inveterate smoker and drinker, Tal's life on the circuit was punctuated by bouts in the hospital with kidney problems, but nothing could dull his love for chess and his sheer genius on the chessboard. His illustrious tournament record, up to his death in 1992, is included here in full, along with 100 complete games and nearly as many positions. Tal's annotations in this book are a world apart from ordinary games collections. No reader could fail to be swept along by his passion and vitality as he sets the scene for an encounter and then recounts every psychological twist and turn.

Book excerpt: The popularity of the Nimzo-Larsen Attack is largely based on its surprise value, but in fact 1.b3 is one of White's more logical first moves, since by immediately developing his queen's bishop, White aims at undermining the black centre. Odessky, an International Master from Russia, a well-known chess coach and an outstanding chess writer, will amuse and surprise you, but also teach you all the ins and outs of this offbeat system, which has been used by top players like Bobby Fischer and Bent Larsen. A good choice for players who want to avoid the many theoretical landmines of mainline openings and prefer to steer towards an open battle, right from the start.

Book Invisible Chess Moves

Download or read book Invisible Chess Moves written by Emmanuel Neiman and published by New In Chess. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every chess player knows that some moves are harder to see than others. Why is it that, frequently, uncomplicated wins simply do not enter your mind? Even strong grandmasters suffer from blind spots that obscure some of the best ideas during a game. What is more: often both players fail to see the opportunity that is right in front of their eyes. Neiman and Afek have researched this problem and discovered that there are actually reasons why your brain discards certain ideas. In this book they demonstrate different categories of hard-to-see chess moves and clearly explain the psychological, positional and geometric factors which cloud your brain. Invisible Chess Moves with its many unique examples, instructive explanations and illuminative tests, will teach how to discover your blind spots and see the moves which remain invisible for others. Your results at the board will improve dramatically because your brain will stop blocking winning ideas.

Book San Antonio 1972

Download or read book San Antonio 1972 written by Bent Larsen and published by Ishi Press. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Antonio 1972 was either the strongest chess tournament ever played in the history of the United States or, if not the very strongest, then second only to New York 1924. What makes this book especially great is not merely was it a great tournament with great players, but that the players annotated some of their own games. In this day and age, there are millions of games in the chess databases, but annotated games are increasingly hard to find. This book has games annotated by Karpov, Larsen, Hort, Suttles, Mecking, Donald Byrne, Gligoric, Keres, Saidy, Portisch, Kaplan, Evans and Smith. Two games were annotated by both Larsen and Petrosian. In addition, many of the games were annotated by International Master David Levy. This book was originally published in Descriptive Chess Notation. Since that time, Descriptive has become almost obsolete. For that reason, all 120 games in this book have been converted into modern Algebraic Notation and are included in an appendix in the back of the book. The games in the back are grouped and sorted alphabetically according to the player of the white pieces. Thus, all games in which Browne played White are first, followed by the games by Byrne, Campos-Lopez, Evans, Gligoric, Hort, Kaplan, Karpov, Keres, Larsen, Mecking, Petrosian, Portisch, Saidy and Smith in that order.
