I am under the painful necessity therefore of giving you the information & of soliciting your attention to the matter. Had I the money you would not have heard from me on the subject unless to inform you that the debt was discharged - I am particularly embarrassed at this time as prior to your receiving the money I drew for two other friends for both of which I have been obliged to advance the money.

How my dear sir is the relief to (arise) if that payment shall be postponed, to a day which hope can be scarcely reached?

Comments that he finds there is a Deputy Commissary of Military Stores retained at West Point, and is not sure why. Believes that there are very few stores there that do not belong to the Garrison, and contends that the Office of Artillery at the post should care for them. Requests Knox's sentiments on these subjects. The body of the letter is written in the hand of William Jackson, Lincoln's assistant.

Wishes Morris will be able to give the paymaster a sum sufficient to discharge the balance between what General Knox has monthly received and what has been received by the former commanding officers at the fort of West Point... Contains Lincoln's copied signature. Second section of the document, on page three, records that a 30 October 1783 resolution of Congress grants [Dollar sign]2,490 dollars in pay to Knox for his command at West Point from September 1782 to November 1783. Includes Knox's copied signature. Third section of the document, also on page three, is from Lincoln to John Pierce, paymaster general of the army of the United States. Lincoln instructs Pierce to pay Knox [Dollar sign]2,490 based on Congress's resolution. Includes Lincoln's copied signature. Watermarked with three fleur-de-lis inside a crest and a crown.
