Book excerpt: When Secretary Clinton transmitted the report of the ARB, the Accountability Review Board, to our committee, she noted in her accompanying letter that all of us have a responsibility to provide the men and women who serve this country with the best possible security and support. Most of all she says, ''It is my responsibility as Secretary of State.'' Tragically the Department did not meet its responsibility to our personnel in Libya. The lethal attack on our diplomatic mission in Benghazi was not the result of a protest against an obscure video as was initially claimed. Instead, and as the evidence makes clear, the attack was coordinated and carried out by terrorists targeting U.S. personnel. After the attack that killed Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, the Secretary of State convened an ARB, which is required by statute due to the fatalities at the post. The ARB states that the attacks on our U.S. Nation in Benghazi on September 11th of this year were, and I quote, ''terrorist attacks.'' Contrary to initial assertions by the Obama administration, the ARB states that the attacks were security related and did not involve a protest prior to the attacks, which were unanticipated in their scope and intensity. Dispatches from the command center of the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security on the day of the attack clearly reported it as a terrorist event, yet officials in Washington refused to recognize and label the attack both during and after September 11th for what it was.

Book excerpt: In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the attack in Benghazi, a noted Libya expert and eyewitness to the attack provides a startling reconsideration of one of the defining controversies of our era. Ten years after an attack on the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, cries of "Benghazi!" still echo across America. But instead of a landmark event to be taken seriously, it has become a punchline, an empty word, or a code for controversy and political theatre. In this thrilling retelling, Ethan Chorin reveals Benghazi as a watershed moment in American history, one that helped create the world America lives in today: polarized, fearful, and dangerously unstable. Here, Benghazi is not a story contained in 13 hours, but a decades-long history beginning with the rise of Muammar Gaddafi, stretching through 9/11, the War on Terror, and the Arab Spring, and reaching into the present day, as the impact of the attack and ensuing controversy remain visible in America and around the world. Chorin draws on his own bone-chilling experience during the Benghazi attack, his expertise as a former diplomat and scholar of Libyan history, and new interviews with Libyan insiders, eyewitnesses, and key players like Hillary Clinton and Ben Rhodes. With this ambitious, engaging narrative, Chorin makes clear why Benghazi still matters so much ten years later—and why we can’t afford to continue overlooking and misunderstanding it.

Book excerpt: Investigations into the 2012 Benghazi Attack In addition to the State Department's Accountability Review Board, there were eight congressional investigations into the 2012 attack in Benghazi Libya, six by Republican-controlled House and two by Senate committees. The resulting reports identified problems with security measures and poor decisions by State Department employees and led to the resignation of the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security director. The results did not support allegations against Obama administration officials of scandal, cover-up and lying about the attack or its aftermath. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Benghazi crisis that occurred exactly 11 years after September 11, 2001 led to the loss of the U.S. ambassador, Christopher Stevens and, hence, stands as one of the worst attacks against the U.S. This book goes beyond the events of September 11, 2012. It explores what went wrong; the things that could have been prevented; the best kept secrets of CIA operations abroad; and presents recommendations that may avoid the loss of more lives as the inevitable war against terror rages on. The first chapter presents more of a background analysis giving a backdrop of the growing tension between various nations. The attacks that occurred on the September 11 may be pegged on some issues that may have been immediate, but the root causes go way back in time. An in-depth look at Libya and Benghazi is given in the second chapter with an aim of presenting a vivid picture of the factors that may have led to the development of unrest and revolt. The next chapters focus their attention to Benghazi, the magnificent Annex, the American ambassador, the overrun, gunfighter road and the counterattack. It takes more than a mere description of tragedies to help readers learn from the mistakes that occur during terror attacks. For every government agent who might be involved in saving lives - or conveying critical intelligence - or knows someone who is involved in U.S. foreign relations - here is the book that encompasses important aspects that they should not miss. This book is written in a modern, conversational style. It is easy to read, yet its message is solid, accurate, and greatly informed.

Book excerpt: The harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi. 13 Hours presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack. 13 Hours sets the record straight on what happened during a night that has been shrouded in mystery and controversy. Written by New York Times bestselling author Mitchell Zuckoff, this riveting book takes readers into the action-packed story of heroes who laid their lives on the line for one another, for their countrymen, and for their country. 13 Hours is a stunning, eye-opening, and intense book--but most importantly, it is the truth. The story of what happened to these men--and what they accomplished--is unforgettable.

Book The Attack in Benghazi Libya

Download or read book The Attack in Benghazi Libya written by Garrett Savitt and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton convened an Accountability Review Board for Benghazi to examine the facts and circumstances surrounding the 11 September 2012 killings of four U.S. government personnel, including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, John Christopher Stevens, in Benghazi, Libya. A series of attacks involving arson, small-arms and machine-gun fire, and use of rocket-propelled grenades, focused on two U.S. facilities in Benghazi, as well as U.S. personnel en route between the two facilities. In addition, the attacks severely wounded two U.S. personnel, injured three Libyan contract guards and resulted in the destruction and abandonment of both facilities. This book examines whether the attacks were security related; whether security systems and procedures were adequate and implemented properly; the impact of intelligence and information availability; whether any other facts of circumstances in these cases may be relevant to appropriate security management of U.S. missions world-wide; and finally, whether any U.S. government employee or contractor, breached her of his duty.

Download or read book The Benghazi Committee written by Jim Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Jordan and Mike Pompeo, dissatisfied with the majority Report of the Benghazi Committee, have released these additional views to set the record straight. On their analysis of the evidence, they argue: I. The administration misled the public about the events in Benghazi. Officials at the State Department, including Secretary Clinton, learnedalmost in real time that the attack in Benghazi was a terrorist attack. With the presidential election just 56 days away, rather than tell the Americanpeople the truth and increase the risk of losing an election, the administration told one story privately and a different story publicly. They publicly blamed the deaths on a video-inspired protest they knew had never occurred. II. Security in Benghazi was woefully inadequate and Secretary Clinton failed to lead. After Qhaddafi, the U.S. knew that we could not count on host nation security in a country where militias held significant power. Yet, in August 2012, Secretary Clinton missed the last, clear chance to protect her people. III. America did not move heaven and earth to rescue our people. Contrary to the administration's claim that it could not have landed in Benghazi in time to help, the administration never directed men or machines into Benghazi. IV. The administration broke its promise to bring the terrorists to justice. After the attacks, President Obama promised "justice will be done." Yet, almost four years later, only one of the terrorists has been captured and brought to the United States to face criminal charges. Even that terrorist will not receive the full measure of justice after the administration chose not to seek the death penalty. The American people are owed an explanation. V. The administration did not cooperate with the investigation Despite its claims, we saw no evidence that the administration held a sincere interest in helping the Committee find the truth about Benghazi. So while the investigation uncovered new information, we nonetheless end the Committee's investigation without many of the facts, especially those involving the President and the White House, that we were chartered to obtain.

Book Tough Love

Download or read book Tough Love written by Susan Rice and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recalling pivotal moments from her dynamic career on the front lines of American diplomacy and foreign policy, Susan E. Rice—National Security Advisor to President Barack Obama and US Ambassador to the United Nations—reveals her surprising story with unflinching candor in this New York Times bestseller. Mother, wife, scholar, diplomat, and fierce champion of American interests and values, Susan Rice powerfully connects the personal and the professional. Taught early, with tough love, how to compete and excel as an African American woman in settings where people of color are few, Susan now shares the wisdom she learned along the way. Laying bare the family struggles that shaped her early life in Washington, DC, she also examines the ancestral legacies that influenced her. Rice’s elders—immigrants on one side and descendants of slaves on the other—had high expectations that each generation would rise. And rise they did, but not without paying it forward—in uniform and in the pulpit, as educators, community leaders, and public servants. Susan too rose rapidly. She served throughout the Clinton administration, becoming one of the nation’s youngest assistant secretaries of state and, later, one of President Obama’s most trusted advisors. Rice provides an insider’s account of some of the most complex issues confronting the United States over three decades, ranging from “Black Hawk Down” in Somalia to the genocide in Rwanda and the East Africa embassy bombings in the late 1990s, and from conflicts in Libya and Syria to the Ebola epidemic, a secret channel to Iran, and the opening to Cuba during the Obama years. With unmatched insight and characteristic bluntness, she reveals previously untold stories behind recent national security challenges, including confrontations with Russia and China, the war against ISIS, the struggle to contain the fallout from Edward Snowden’s NSA leaks, the U.S. response to Russian interference in the 2016 election, and the surreal transition to the Trump administration. Although you might think you know Susan Rice—whose name became synonymous with Benghazi following her Sunday news show appearances after the deadly 2012 terrorist attacks in Libya—now, through these pages, you truly will know her for the first time. Often mischaracterized by both political opponents and champions, Rice emerges as neither a villain nor a victim, but a strong, resilient, compassionate leader. Intimate, sometimes humorous, but always candid, Tough Love makes an urgent appeal to the American public to bridge our dangerous domestic divides in order to preserve our democracy and sustain our global leadership.

Book excerpt: Finally the truth about the YouTube video Hillary blamed for Benghazi. The last thing Hillary Clinton wants you to read is the truth about the infamous YouTube video she claimed sparked the Benghazi attacks. That’s why Cindy Lee Garcia—the deceived actress from the video—is Hillary's worst nightmare. She woke up the day after the Benghazi attacks to see her face all over national television, with Hillary blaming her for the deaths of four Americans. New York Times best-selling author Kenneth R. Timmerman digs deep into the web of deception surrounding the “hateful” video, with stunning new documents, emails, and interviews with many of the participants. This is the story of a deception that went way beyond a YouTube video to encompass Hillary Clinton’s diabolical vision for America under Islamic law.

Book The Great War of Our Time

Download or read book The Great War of Our Time written by Michael Morell and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like See No Evil and At the Center of the Storm, this is a vivid and gripping account of the Central Intelligence Agency, a life of secrets, and a war in the shadows. Called the "Bob Gates of his generation" by Politico, Michael Morell was a top CIA officer who played a critical role in the most important counterterrorism events of the past two decades. Morell was by President Bush's side on 9/11/01 when terrorists struck America and in the White House Situation Room advising President Obama on 5/1/11 when America struck back-killing Usama bin Ladin. From the subway bombings in London to the terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Morell always seemed to find himself on the cusp of history. A superb intelligence analyst and briefer, Morell now presents The Great War of Our Time, where he uses his talents to offer an unblinking and insightful assessment of CIA's counterterrorism successes and failures of the past twenty years and, perhaps most important, shows readers that the threat of terrorism did not die with Bin Ladin in Abbottabad. Morell illuminates new, growing threats from terrorist groups that, if unaddressed, could leave the country vulnerable to attacks that would dwarf 9/11 in magnitude. He writes of secret, back-channel negotiations he conducted with foreign spymasters and regime leaders in a desperate attempt to secure a peaceful outcome to unrest launched during the "Arab Spring." Morell describes how efforts to throw off the shackles of oppression have too often resulted in broken nation states unable or unwilling to join the fight against terrorism. Along the way Morell provides intimate portraits of the leadership styles of figures ranging from Presidents Bush and Obama, CIA directors Tenet, Goss, Hayden, Petraeus, Panetta, and Brennan, and a host of others.

Book excerpt: Written by the team of former Special Operations warriors who run SOFREP.com, here is the definitive account of what happened before, during, and after the deadly Benghazi attack. On September 12th, 2012, Brandon Webb learned Glen Doherty, one of his closest friends and his former Navy SEAL teammate, was killed alongside Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and two other Americans when the U.S. State Department and CIA headquarters in Benghazi, Libya, were sieged in a shocking terrorist attack. For the next four months, Webb and his team at SOFREP.com, the world’s premier Special Ops website, embarked on a relentless investigation to understand exactly what happened to their countrymen, as well as the roles played by the Obama administration, State Department, and CIA. Drawing on unmatched sources, they spoke to individuals who would talk to no one else, including fellow Special Operations team members familiar with the African theatre, and to well-placed contacts in the Washington intelligence community.
