Book excerpt: Apart from two tragedies, Sejanus and Catiline, that largely failed to impress Renaissance audiences, Jonson's work for the public theatres was in comedy. These plays vary in some respects. The minor early plays, particularly those written for boy players, present somewhat looser plots and less-developed characters than those written later, for adult companies. Already in the plays which were his salvos in the Poet's War, he displays the keen eye for absurdity and hypocrisy that marks his best-known plays; in these early efforts, however, plot mostly takes second place to variety of incident and comic set-pieces. They are, also, notably ill-tempered. Thomas Davies called Poetaster "a contemptible mixture of the serio-comic, where the names of Augustus Caesar, Maecenas, Virgil, Horace, Ovid, and Tibullus, are all sacrificed upon the altar of private resentment." Another early comedy in a different vein, The Case is Altered, is markedly similar to Shakespeare's romantic comedies in its foreign setting, emphasis on genial wit, and love-plot. Henslowe's diary indicates that Jonson had a hand in numerous other plays, including many in genres such as English history with which he is not otherwise associated.

Book excerpt: Henry Hallam: "The pastoral drama of the Sad Shepherd is the best testimony to the poetical imagination of Jonson. Superior in originality, liveliness, and beauty to the Faithful Shepherdess of Fletcher, it reminds us rather, in language and imagery, of the Midsummer Night's Dream; and perhaps no other poetry has come so near to that of Shakespeare" Literature of Europe (1837-39)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ben Jonson's Sad Shepherd: With Waldron's Continuation The Sad Shepherd is not one of the great works upon which Jon son's Titanic reputation rests. It is, as a rule, little mentioned by critics, for it stands at a disadvantage in two important respects. In the first place, it is of little use for the purpose of illustrating those peculiar qualities, in virtue of which its author holds a position of his own in the motley company of Elizabethan playwrights. In the second, it has come down to us in a fragmentary state. As a consequence it probably finds few readers beyond professed students of Jonson, or such individual eccentrics as the present editor, who happen to take an interest in pastoral poetry as such. If, however, it bears little trace of the robust genius that portrayed the Alchemist and the F ox, it yet remains the most considerable achievement of that other Jonson, the delicacy of whose lyric utterance contrasts so strangely with the burly presence of the laureate. Mr Swinburne has very truly remarked that (c No work of Ben Jonson's is more amusing and agreeable to read, as none is more nobly graceful in expression or more excellent in simplicity of style n. Editions. After Jonson's death on August 6, 1637, his works were collected and printed in two small folio volumes with the date 1640. The first of these was a reprint of the original folio of 1616, the second was composed of new matter. We find an entry in the Sta tioners' Register referring to this venture on March 20. Book excerpt: Benjamin "Ben" Jonson was born in June, 1572. A contemporary of William Shakespeare, he is best known for his satirical plays; Volpone, The Alchemist, and Bartholomew Fair, and his equally accomplished lyric poems. A man of vast reading and a seemingly insatiable appetite for controversy, including time in jail and a penchant for switching faiths, Jonson had an unparalleled breadth of influence on Jacobean and Caroline playwrights and poets. In 1616 Jonson was appointed by King James I to receive a yearly pension of Đ60 to become what is recognized as the first official Poet Laureate. He died on the 6th of August, 1637 at Westminster and is buried in the north aisle of the nave at Westminster Abbey. A master of both playwriting and poetry his reputation continues to endure and reach a new audience with each succeeding generation.
