Book Responding to Oil Spills in the U S Arctic Marine Environment

Download or read book Responding to Oil Spills in the U S Arctic Marine Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Arctic waters north of the Bering Strait and west of the Canadian border encompass a vast area that is usually ice covered for much of the year, but is increasingly experiencing longer periods and larger areas of open water due to climate change. Sparsely inhabited with a wide variety of ecosystems found nowhere else, this region is vulnerable to damage from human activities. As oil and gas, shipping, and tourism activities increase, the possibilities of an oil spill also increase. How can we best prepare to respond to such an event in this challenging environment? Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment reviews the current state of the science regarding oil spill response and environmental assessment in the Arctic region north of the Bering Strait, with emphasis on the potential impacts in U.S. waters. This report describes the unique ecosystems and environment of the Arctic and makes recommendations to provide an effective response effort in these challenging conditions. According to Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment, a full range of proven oil spill response technologies is needed in order to minimize the impacts on people and sensitive ecosystems. This report identifies key oil spill research priorities, critical data and monitoring needs, mitigation strategies, and important operational and logistical issues. The Arctic acts as an integrating, regulating, and mediating component of the physical, atmospheric and cryospheric systems that govern life on Earth. Not only does the Arctic serve as regulator of many of the Earth's large-scale systems and processes, but it is also an area where choices made have substantial impact on life and choices everywhere on planet Earth. This report's recommendations will assist environmentalists, industry, state and local policymakers, and anyone interested in the future of this special region to preserve and protect it from damaging oil spills.

Book Beaufort Sea Development

Download or read book Beaufort Sea Development written by K. Upperton and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The federal government is becoming increasingly alarmed with the continued and concerted attack against its energy policies. Despite the pressure there remain formidable hurdles to be cleared before the bureaucracy and the political process is satisfied that an approval process for the Beaufort can be set in motion. This internal paper attempts to examine the current federal thinking at the official level and translate it into firstly, a very objective review of possible implications for Dome and, secondly, where appropriate, to suggest possible approaches aimed at improving the policy climate regarding Beaufort oil supply. It should be emphasized that the views expressed below are based entirely on a current reading of Ottawa opinions regarding the Beaufort. No attempt has been made to colour these attitudes since to do so would dilute the value of the document to Dome. A policy oriented study of the relative merits of pipelines versus tankers for a delivery system of Beaufort oil to consumer markets has been prepared"--Leaf [1].

Book The Transportation of Oil by Sea

Download or read book The Transportation of Oil by Sea written by Tony Akaki and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the coming of the 'dot com" era it was by no accident that the richest individuals in the world were involved with tankers. Probably the most famous ship owner in the world was Aristotle Socrates Onassis. But before one looks at tanker freights of which Onassis among others managed to secure a good return on capital it is crucial to recap and examine some of the factors that affected the tanker industry starting with the Second World War. The Transportation of Oil by Sea offers a fascinating introductory account of crude oil transportation and how international issues from World War II, pre-independence Zimbabwe, and the Iran-Iraq War have been influenced by considerations for oil production and transportation. Author Tony Akaki presents a diversity of geographical, political, environmental, and economic insights in one volume, offering a compelling look at this often-overlooked aspect of history.
