Book Fragments Of Science Festschrift For Mendel Sachs

Download or read book Fragments Of Science Festschrift For Mendel Sachs written by Dharam V Ahluwalia and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-11-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Mendel Sachs's contributions have been wide-ranging and the lectures presented at the symposium honoring him on his retirement encompassed a broad spectrum — hence the title Fragments of Science. The topics covered include solar physics, quantum mechanics, crystallography, elementary particles, logic and philosophy, and the history of physics. Included also is a new poem by noted poet Robert Creeley, composed especially for the symposium.Harvey Breverman, an eminent artist and professor of art, attended the symposium and sketched the lecturers and recorded some of the material they presented (as seen from the eyes of an artist!). These remarkable drawings are reproduced in duotone throughout the volume. Post-banquet reminiscences of turbulent times at the university in the late 1960s by noted author and computer guru Cliff Stoll enliven the volume. T Y Wu and Sachs exchange greetings and comments regarding their discussions of the twin paradox in the 1970s. Sachs closes the volume with an illuminating autobiographical chapter. This is a highly stimulating volume and a feast for the eyes.

Book Representing Electrons

    Book Details:
  • Author : Theodore Arabatzis
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2006-10-19
  • ISBN : 0226024229
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book Representing Electrons written by Theodore Arabatzis and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both a history and a metahistory, Representing Electrons focuses on the development of various theoretical representations of electrons from the late 1890s to 1925 and the methodological problems associated with writing about unobservable scientific entities. Using the electron—or rather its representation—as a historical actor, Theodore Arabatzis illustrates the emergence and gradual consolidation of its representation in physics, its career throughout old quantum theory, and its appropriation and reinterpretation by chemists. As Arabatzis develops this novel biographical approach, he portrays scientific representations as partly autonomous agents with lives of their own. Furthermore, he argues that the considerable variance in the representation of the electron does not undermine its stable identity or existence. Raising philosophical issues of contentious debate in the history and philosophy of science—namely, scientific realism and meaning change—Arabatzis addresses the history of the electron across disciplines, integrating historical narrative with philosophical analysis in a book that will be a touchstone for historians and philosophers of science and scientists alike.

Just a few real heavyweights in the world merit the title, and Steven Weinberg is preeminent among them.” —Richard Dawkins “Weinberg has a knack for capturing a complex concept in a succinct, unforgettable image... One of the smartest and most diligent scientists around.” —Nature In this wise and wide-ranging meditation, one of the most captivating science communicators of our time challenges us to reconsider the entanglement of science and society. From the cosmological to the personal, from astronomy and quantum physics to the folly of manned spaceflight and the rewards of getting things wrong, Steven Weinberg shares his views on the workings of the universe and our aspirations and limitations. Third Thoughts aims to provoke and inform and never loses sight of the human dimension of scientific discovery. “One of the 20th century’s greatest physicists...shares his strongly-held opinions on everything from the Higgs boson to the state of theoretical physics and the problems of science and society.” —Forbes “This book should be read not only for its insightful and illuminating explanations of a wide range of physical phenomena but also for the opportunity it affords to follow the wanderings of a brilliant mind through topics ranging from high-energy physics and the makeup of the cosmos to poetry, and from the history and philosophy of science to the dangers of economic inequality... [A] captivating book.” —Mario Livio, Science

Book The Early Shortwave Stations

Download or read book The Early Shortwave Stations written by Jerome S. Berg and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1923, less than three years after Westinghouse station KDKA signed on, company engineer Frank Conrad began regular simulcasting of its programs on a frequency in the newly-discovered shortwave range. It was an important event in a technological revolution that would make dependable worldwide radio communication possible for the first time. In subsequent years, countless stations in practically all countries followed suit, taking to shortwave to extend reception domestically or reach audiences thousands of miles away. Shortwave broadcasting would also have an important role in World War II and in the Cold War. In this, his fourth book on shortwave broadcast history, the author revisits the period of his earlier work, On the Short Waves, 1923-1945, and focuses on the stations that were on the air in those early days. The year-by-year account chronicles the birth and operation of the large international broadcasters, as well as the numerous smaller stations that were a great attraction to the DXers, or long-distance radio enthusiasts, of the time. With more than 100 illustrations and extensive notes, bibliography and index, the book is also a valuable starting point for further study and research.
