Book Beam Dynamics Studies on the ISAC II Post accelerator at TRIUMF

Download or read book Beam Dynamics Studies on the ISAC II Post accelerator at TRIUMF written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The TRIUMF/ISAC facility, now a world leader in rare isotope production and acceleration, is constructing ISAC-II [1, 2], that will allow the acceleration of ion beams with 3 (less-than or equal to) A/q (less-than or equal to) 7 to an energy of at least 6.5 MeV/u for masses up to 150. The upgrade will include the addition of a superconducting heavy-ion linac delivering an effective voltage of 43 MV. The first order design of the new transfer lines and post-accelerator have been optimized to provide simultaneous acceleration of several charge states (multicharge). The quarter wave resonators providing the acceleration have inherent rf electric and magnetic asymmetric components that complicate multi-charge acceleration and can lead to transverse emittance growth. In particular we report the realistic field simulations of the medium beta section of the SC-DTL for multi-charge acceleration.

Book ISAC and ARIEL The TRIUMF Radioactive Beam Facilities and the Scientific Program

Download or read book ISAC and ARIEL The TRIUMF Radioactive Beam Facilities and the Scientific Program written by Jens Dilling and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility uses the isotope separation on-line (ISOL) technique to produce rare-isotope beams (RIB). The ISOL system consists of a primary production beam, a target/ion source, a mass separator, and beam transport system. The rare isotopes produced during the interaction of the proton beam with the target nucleus are stopped in the bulk of the target material. They diffuse inside the target material matrix to the surface of the grain and then effuse to the ion source where they are ionized to form an ion beam that can be separated by mass and then guided to the experimental facilities. Previously published in the journal Hyperfine Interactions.

Book Beam Dynamics Studies of the ISOLDE Post accelerator for the High Intensity and Energy Upgrade

Download or read book Beam Dynamics Studies of the ISOLDE Post accelerator for the High Intensity and Energy Upgrade written by Matthew Alexander Fraser and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The High Intensity and Energy (HIE) project represents a major upgrade of the ISOLDE (On-Line Isotope Mass Separator) nuclear facility at CERN with a mandate to significantly increase the energy, intensity and quality of the radioactive nuclear beams provided to the European nuclear physics community for research at the forefront of topics such as nuclear structure physics and nuclear astrophysics. The HIE-ISOLDE project focuses on the upgrade of the existing Radioactive ion beam EXperiment (REX) post-accelerator with the addition of a 40 MV superconducting linac comprising 32 niobium sputter-coated copper quarter-wave cavities operating at 101.28 MHz and at an accelerating gradient close to 6 MV/m. The energy of post-accelerated radioactive nuclear beams will be increased from the present ceiling of 3 MeV/u to over 10 MeV/u, with full variability in energy, and will permit, amongst others, Coulomb interaction and few-nucleon transfer reactions to be carried out on the full inventory of radionuclides available at ISOLDE. In this thesis the beam dynamics of the superconducting linac is studied with a focus on identifying and mitigating the sources of beam emittance dilution. Highlights include the suppression of a parametric resonance, compensation of the beam-steering effect intrinsic to quarter-wave cavities and a study of the energy change in the cavities well below their geometric velocity using second-order transit-time factors. The studies lead to the specification and tolerances for the linac components. An extensive investigation of REX was also carried out involving rf and beam measurements that facilitated the benchmarking of the beam dynamics codes that were used to design the matching sections and ensure the compatibility of the upgrade. In addition, a solid-state diagnostics system was developed as a tool to aid the quick and eventually automated tuning of the large number of cavities that will accompany the upgrade.

Book Beam Dynamics In High Energy Particle Accelerators Second Edition

Download or read book Beam Dynamics In High Energy Particle Accelerators Second Edition written by Andrzej Wolski and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-energy particle accelerators are as diverse as their uses, which range from scientific research in fields such as high-energy physics, materials science and the life sciences, to applications in industry and medicine. Despite the diversity of accelerators, the particle beams that they are designed to produce behave in ways that share many common features. Beam Dynamics in High Energy Particle Accelerators aims to provide an introduction to phenomena regularly encountered when working with beams in accelerators; from the basic principles of motion of relativistic particles in electromagnetic fields, to instabilities that can affect beam quality in machines operating at high current. This book assumes no prior experience with accelerator physics and develops the subject in a way that provides a solid foundation for more advanced study of specific topics. As well as including numerous revisions and improvements in the text, this second edition features substantial new material, including sections on fringe fields in multipole magnets, Verlet integration for particle tracking, and measurement of beam emittances. References and discussions of current topics have been updated. As with the first edition, the aim is to provide practical and powerful tools and techniques for the study of beam dynamics, while emphasizing the elegance of the subject and helping the reader develop a deep understanding of the relevant physics.

Book Theory and Modeling of Intense Ion Beams and Diagnostic Measurements in Accelerator Front Ends

Download or read book Theory and Modeling of Intense Ion Beams and Diagnostic Measurements in Accelerator Front Ends written by Chun Yan Jonathan Wong and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beam dynamics in front ends of ion accelerators is often subject to strong space charge and significant transverse coupling due to magnetic fields in the source and the use of focusing solenoids in the beam line. This thesis starts with an overview and a brief primer on beam dynamics to frame two research themes: simulation and analytic studies on beam dynamics, and improvements on transverse beam diagnostics. Each theme is first developed in a general treatment, followed by applications to the front end of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). The first research theme includes: (1) numerical modelling of accelerator front ends, and (2) analytic studies of coupled transverse beam dynamics. In (1), a set of readily adaptable simulation tools based on the PIC code Warp is constructed to model the transport and manipulation of intense multi-species beams with high levels of detail. The tools are applied to investigate beam evolution in the FRIB front end including the species separation process. In (2), general analytic results on beams with rotational symmetry and the formalism of eigen-emittances are derived to elucidate non-axisymmetric initial conditions at the ion source and beam states advantageous for solenoid transport. The results are employed to construct LEBT/MEBT (low/medium energy beam transport) tuning schemes currently adopted at FRIB for transverse matching of strongly magnetized beams into the RFQ and cryomodules respectively. The second research theme presents improvements on transverse beam diagnostics including: (1) corrections in the conventional data analysis model of high-resolution phase space measurements with Allison scanners, and (2) error minimization in beam matrix measurements and enhanced tomography capabilities using beam profile monitors. All techniques and algorithms under this theme have been verified using measurements at FRIB.

Book Beam Dynamics of the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment II NDCX II a Novel Pulse compressing Ion Accelerator

Download or read book Beam Dynamics of the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment II NDCX II a Novel Pulse compressing Ion Accelerator written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intense beams of heavy ions are well suited for heating matter to regimes of emerging interest. A new facility, NDCX-II, will enable studies of warm dense matter at (almost equal to)1 eV and near-solid density, and of heavy-ion inertial fusion target physics relevant to electric power production. For these applications the beam must deposit its energy rapidly, before the target can expand significantly. To form such pulses, ion beams are temporally compressed in neutralizing plasma; current amplification factors of (almost equal to)50-100 are routinely obtained on the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment (NDCX) at LBNL. In the NDCX-II physics design, an initial non-neutralized compression renders the pulse short enough that existing high-voltage pulsed power can be employed. This compression is first halted and then reversed by the beam's longitudinal space-charge field. Downstream induction cells provide acceleration and impose the head-to-tail velocity gradient that leads to the final neutralized compression onto the target. This paper describes the discrete-particle simulation models (1-D, 2-D, and 3-D) employed and the space-charge-dominated beam dynamics being realized.
