Book The Bayonets Of The Republic

Download or read book The Bayonets Of The Republic written by John A Lynn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bayonets of the Republic challenges the view of the French revolutionary army as an unskilled but fiercely patriotic fighting force that won simply by overwhelming its enemies with bayonet assaults. Skillfully combining traditional and new military history, Lynn demonstrates that French combat effectiveness encompassed far more than mere patriotism or frenzied charges.Lynn focuses on the Armee du Nord, largest of the eleven armies which protected the borders of France at the height of the Revolution. He does not, however, restrict himself to an analysis of generalship or weaponry, but examines every aspect of life in the French army--from rank-and-file recruitment, officer selection, discipline, political education, and group cohesion, to the flexible use of line, column, and skirmishers on the battlefield. The image which emerges is one of a highly motivated, disciplined, and tactically superior army that outmaneuvered and outfought its opponents. For students of the French Revolution, Bayonets builds upon and extends the best of recent scholarship on subjects as diverse as the debate over conscription and the distribution of revolutionary newspapers and songbooks. For military historians, it combines social, organizational, and operational elements to present a unique view of the French army as an institution and fighting force. And, finally, for social scientists concerned with troop motivation and combat effectiveness, it supplies a highly illustrative case study of troops under fire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a style that is clear, unhurried and . . . vigorous, Francis P. Prucha has written a definitive study of [the] frontier army that was itself a pioneer. It pushed the line of occupation far beyond settlements. It raised crops, herded cattle, cut timber, quarried stone, built sawmills and performed the manifold duties of pioneers. It restrained lawless traders, pursued fugitives, ejected squatters, maintained order during peace negotiations and guarded Indians who came to receive annuities."--New York Times Book Review. "A work of original research which stands almost alone in relating the Army's work to the peaceful processes of territorial expansion and social development. Studying the thirteen army posts established in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and northern Illinois, the author demonstrates their importance for Indian and land policy administration, as cash markets for the early settlers, and as centers of exploration, road-building, and cultural developments."--A Guide to the Study of the United States of America. "Well-written. . . . a significant contribution to the study of . . . both the westward movement and our military establishment."--Mississippi Valley Historical Review. Known for his books about American Indian government policy and the frontier army, Francis Paul Prucha, S.J., is an emeritus professor of history at Marquette University. Introducing this edition is Edward M. Coffman, a professor of history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the author of The Old Army: A Portrait of the American Army in Peacetime, 1784?1898.

Book Philippine Sanctuary

Download or read book Philippine Sanctuary written by Bonnie M. Harris and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Of the many refugee trails filled with stateless Jews fleeing Europe during the decades of the Nazi Regime, the odyssey of Cantor Joseph Cysner's escape from Hamburg to Poland to the Philippines stands unique. Joseph escaped the fate of thousands of refugees held at border-camps along the German-Polish border in 1938 and joined hundreds of European refugee Jews ultimately saved from destruction between 1937 and 1941 by little known rescue plans in the East Asian Community of the Philippines. His rescue by Commonwealth officials President Manual Quezon and High Commissioner Paul V. McNutt, and American Jewish businessmen and leaders in Manila, illuminates their heroic efforts in organizing selection and sponsorship programs that overcame limits imposed by the US and other countries during the refugee crisis and heroically saved as many souls as they could before war intervened. Even though it too was ill-fated by the Japanese invasion, Quezon's remarkable offer demonstrated what could be accomplished when nation's leaders were willing to put aside political agendas to act in the universally noble cause of saving human lives. By opening their doors to the refugees, the Filipinos also opened their hearts and gave them a new homeland. Joseph Cysner's personal story of refuge in the Philippines and the vibrant Jewish community that arose there weaves itself throughout the humanitarian efforts to aid the persecuted with a sanctuary in the Pacific. This book resurrects these important events from historical oblivion"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August and September 1914 the Regimental Depot of the Durham Light Infantry at Fenham Barracks in Newcastle was overwhelmed by the number of men enlisting. Accommodation was tight so the men were formed into batches and sent off to training grounds in the south of England. Over 2,000 men were sent to Bulllswater near Woking in Surrey where they became the 12th and 13th Battalions of the DLI serving in 68 Brigade of the 23rd Division, commanded by Lieutenant General Sir James Babington KCB KCMG. The Division never failed to take an objective between 1915 and 1918.After initial training around Aldershot and Ashford, in May they embarked for France on 25 August 1915. In November Private Thomas Kenny, of the 13th DLI, a miner from Wingate, County Durham, won the Victoria Cross rescuing his wounded officer. In the summer of 1916 they joined the fighting on the Somme and took part in the capture of Contalmaison on 10 July. In October the two battalions took part in the capture of Le Sars before being sent north to the Ypres Salient. In Flanders they took part in the Battle of Messines and the 3rd Battle of Ypres. In November 1917 the 23rd Division was ordered to the Italian Front. The 12th and 13th Battalions were initially deployed on the Montello before moving into the mountainous region of the Asiago Plateau. They were attacked by the Austrians on 15 June 1918, however, the only enemy soldiers that entered the Durhams' trenches did so as prisoners, brought in by men of the two battalions. The 13th DLI was ordered back to France in September 1918 where it took part in the advance to victory; the battalion suffered many casualties in the last six weeks of the war. The 12th DLI remained in Italy and took part in the crossing of the River Piave in October 1918 and the Battle of Vittorio Veneto that led to the end of the war in Italy. The book uses unpublished memoirs and diaries along with letters from officers and men of both battalions. Using the soldiers personal documents this book reveals many of the tragic stories that led to unnecessary loss of life. Lists of gallantry awards and nominal rolls of officers of both battalions are included.

Download or read book Fix Bayonets written by John Norris and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2016-01-03 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bayonet is an essential item of a soldier's kit even on today's modern hi-tech battlefield. This work examines the origins of this humble weapon and the 'cult of the bayonet' as espoused by the Russian General Alexander Suvorov who asserted that The bullet misses, the bayonet does not. The first bayonets appeared in France in the early 17th century and soon they were being used by every army in Europe. The author examines the spread of this simple weapon and how it led to fundamental changes being made in battlefield tactics. Over 300 years later, in the age of hi-tech warfare and weapons of mass destruction, the bayonet is still in service with armies around the world. British and US forces in Afghanistan regularly have their bayonets fixed. Fix Bayonets illustrates how tactics changed and the design of the weapon, although fundamentally the same, has evolved over the centuries.Much myth and legend surrounds the subject of bayonet charges and the weapon has become an icon of defiance and the determination to do whatever it takes to win. The author examines evidence for the reality of such actions. How did the ordinary soldier feel to be told 'fix bayonets'? John Norris draws on personal accounts of soldiers using bayonets in combat from the Napoleonic and Crimean Wars, various Colonial campaigns, through the World Wars, Falklands War and into the 21st century in Afghanistan. In so doing he explains the seemingly anachronistic survival of this simple weapon on the modern battlefield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century marked a watershed in European history. This was a period of significant economic, political and technological upheaval which led to the American and French revolutions, and was to ultimately pave the way for Europe’s domination of much of the world during the nineteenth century.??The wars and political maneuvering of Frederick the Great and Catherine the Great transformed Prussia and Russia into major players in European politics. France, the richest nation in the West; survived losing successive wars, then bankrupted itself assisting the Americans in an unnecessary war of revenge. Britain became the model of economic and financial efficiency and made itself supreme in North America, the Caribbean, and in India, only to face such financial troubles that its leaders antagonized its colonial subjects in America. ??This engaging new book by esteemed military historian William Urban traces the evolution of war-making throughout this turbulent period – the politics, the weaponry, the organisation of armies, and the transformation of mercenaries into professionals. This illuminating and highly readable account concentrates not just on high politics and military strategy, but also on the everyday experiences of those involved, giving us a fascinating glimpse into the human drama of eighteenth-century warfare.

Book Ali and Nino

  • Author : Kurban Said
  • Publisher : Abrams
  • Release : 1999-09-01
  • ISBN : 1590209788
  • Pages : 186 pages

Download or read book Ali and Nino written by Kurban Said and published by Abrams. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Girl from the Golden Horn, a novel of the enduring love between childhood friends divided by war & their separate cultures. First published in Vienna in 1937, this classic story of romance and adventure has been compared to Dr. Zhivago and Romeo and Juliet. Ali and Nino is Kurban Said’s masterpiece. It is a captivating novel as evocative of the exotic desert landscape as it is of the passion between two people pulled apart by culture, religion, and war. It is the eve of World War I in Baku, Azerbaijan, a city on the edge of the Caspian Sea, poised precariously between east and west. Ali Khan Shirvanshir, a Muslim schoolboy from a proud, aristocratic family, has fallen in love with the beautiful and enigmatic Nino Kipiani, a Christian girl with distinctly European sensibilities. To be together they must overcome blood feud and scandal, attempt a daring horseback rescue, and travel from the bustling street of oil-boom Baku, through starkly beautiful deserts and remote mountain villages, to the opulent palace of Ali’s uncle in neighboring Persia. Ultimately the lovers are drawn back to Baku, but when war threatens their future, Ali is forced to choose between his loyalty to the beliefs of his Asian ancestors and his profound devotion to Nino. Combining the exotic fascination of a tale told by Scheherazade with the range and magnificence of an epic, Ali and Nino is a timeless classic of love in the face of war. Praise for Ali and Nino “Said’s romantic tale of young love and political upheaval in Central Asia calls for violins and handkerchiefs. . . . A saga of war and love and the difficult marriage of Europe and Asia in the Caucasus, this is at heart a rousing, old-fashioned, tear-jerking love story.” —Publishers Weekly “Poignant and beautiful . . . alive with a vividly unique vision of colliding cultures and enduring love.” —Newsweek “One feels as if one had dug up buried treasure. . . . An epic of cultural change that seems more immediate than this morning's headlines.” —The New York Times
