Book Plant Resistance to Viruses

Download or read book Plant Resistance to Viruses written by David Evered and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern about the environmental consequences of the widespread use of pesticides has increased, and evidence of pesticide-resistant virus vectors have continued to emerge. This volume presents a timely survey of the mechanisms of plant resistance and examines current developments in breeding for resistance, with particular emphasis on advances in genetic engineering which allow for the incorporation of viral genetic material into plants. Discusses the mechanisms of innate resistance in strains of tobacco, tomato, and cowpea; various aspects of induced resistance, including the characterization and roles of the pathogenesis-related proteins; antiviral substances and their comparison with interferon; and cross-protection between plant virus strains. Also presents several papers which evaluate the status of genetic engineering as it relates to breeding resistant plants. Among these are discussions of the potential use of plant viruses as gene vectors, gene coding for viral coat protein, satellite RNA, and antisense RNA, and practical issues such as the durability of resistant crop plants in the field.

Book Barley Yellow Dwarf

Download or read book Barley Yellow Dwarf written by George W. Bruehl and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Barley Yellow Dwarf: A Virus Disease of Cereals and Grasses Barley yellow dwarf has been recognized as a virus disease of cereals and grasses only since 1951, when it was discovered by Oswald and Houston (164) in California. Nevertheless, even in this short time it has become accepted as a disease of major importance i-n many areas of the United States, and in other countries as well. In 1959, for example, barley yellow dwarf virus incited the most serious single disease of oats in the United States and caused production losses in the central oat belt comparable with those recorded for various epidemics of other major diseases of that crop (156, Moreover, inherent in the economic implications of barley yellow dwarf is the long-range potential of a disease that is caused by a' versatile virus of wide host range. Even in its infancy, therefore, barley yellow dwarf seems destined to assume classic status among cereal diseases and thus to become increasingly important in teaching and research. Hence, there is compelling need for monographic treatment of this disease at this time, to provide both a teaching aid and a standard refer ence for the rapidly increasing diverse research activity. Throughout the manuscript, the author uses the terms cereals and small grains. These words are meant to refer only to barley, oats, wheat, and rye in this treatise. Also, considerable detail of aphid-life cycles is included in the belief that, as the only means of spread of the barley yellow dwarf virus, any factor affecting the aphid is important to the disease. Book Diversity in Barley Hordeum vulgare

Download or read book Diversity in Barley Hordeum vulgare written by R. von Bothmer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-07-03 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic diversity is one of the main resources sustaining human life. Food security largely depends on the availability and utilization of this diversity, which is of strategic importance for countries and companies. Conservation and utilization of biodiversity is thus currently an urgent area of global debate and concern. Barley is a major crop in the world used for food, feed and malt, and with a wide religious and ethnic importance. The crop was domesticated in Neolithic time in SW Asia and spread rapidly under cultivation to new areas. Nowadays it is one of the most widespread and widely adapted crops grown under contrasting edaphic conditions. Adaptations to new environments, different agricultural practices and selection for different uses have further added to the complex diversity pattern. Is it at all possible to give a complete picture of the diversity in a crop or wild species? Are we, by adding new technologies, only revealing parts of the diversity? Do different sets of data show similar or conflicting pictures of genetic diversity? Will the large genome size reduce the role of barley as a model organism in these current sequencing days? Or, are there still major reasons to continue to work with this beautiful crop? The aim of this book is to cover the complex issue of diversification in time and space in a single crop: barley. Leading scientists from various fields describe the entire variation pattern in different sets of characters and an attempt is made for a synthesis to a holistic picture. The book proposes ways to use the achievements of diversity studies in future research and breeding programmes.

Book Assessment of Resistance and Inheritance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus Disease BYDV in Five Wheat Cultivars Triticum Aestivum L

Download or read book Assessment of Resistance and Inheritance to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus Disease BYDV in Five Wheat Cultivars Triticum Aestivum L written by Jaime Tola and published by INIAP Archivo Historico. This book was released on 1983 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) is a major disease of wheat. Unfortunately, unlike barley where the Yd2 gene provides adequate levels of resistance, the situation in wheat is more complex. This study was designed to provide information regarding: 1) evaluation of methods of measuring resistance among selected cultivars; 2) identification of sources of resistance; and 3) determination of the nature of inheritance controlling BYDV resistance. Five wheat cultivars with possible different levels of resistance to BYDV and the resulting F1, F2, F3, BC-1 and BC-2 populations provided the experimental material. An assessment of the damage inflicted by aphids feeding per se and aphid plus virus on the five cultivars was determined under greenhouse conditions. Cultivars and the resulting progeny were grown in the field to confirm the greenhouse findings and to determine nature of inheritance. Aphid feeding per se did not influence most cultivars other than for plant height involving Yamhill and Anza. Despite the lack of visual symptoms, BYDV did significantly influence the six parameters measured with the cultivars Stephens and Riebesel exhibiting the greatest reduction. No immunity was observed for any of the cultivars tested. Under field conditions Stephens, followed by Riebesel, were the most susceptible cultivars with Yamhill, Novi Sad and Anza being the most resistant based on the parameters measured. The inheritance pattern appeared to be quantitative with both additive and nonadditive genetic variability involved in controlling resistance. This was verified by the transgressive segregation noted in F2 and F3 generations and the significant General and Specific Combining Ability estimates for the BYDV score. Due to the quantitative nature of BYDV resistance and the different genetic factors observed for the cultivars in this study, a recurrent selection program should result in higher levels of resistance than exhibited by the cultivars employed in this study. Also, the use of a visual BYDV score appears to be an effective means of identifying resistant parents.
