It is primarily found in Algeria's and Morocco's Atlas Mountains. Because of its distinct appearance-it lacks a tail, unlike most other macaques-the Barbary macaque is commonly mistaken for an ape. Males of these macaques tend to be larger than females, making them heavy-set animals. Their body length is between 55 and 75 cm, and they weigh between 10 and 16 kg. Women are smaller, weighing between 5 and 11 kg. Their dark brown to grayish fur, which is thick, protects them from the freezing conditions of their mountain habitats. Their face is hairless, soft pink, and expressive. It is capable of producing a range of facial expressions that are significant in their social interactions. Gregarious primates, barbary macaques usually reside in groups of one to several dozen. With high mortality rates from unsanitary facilities and insufficient care, the journey to their new homes is frequently difficult. Even for those that make it through, having a pet can be extremely difficult. It is challenging to give complex stimulation and a highly social environment to barbary macaques in a regular home. Their inability to engage in socializing, grooming, and foraging-all of which are natural behaviors-causes bodily and mental problems. Furthermore, because of their strong social ties, when they lack sufficient socialization or company, they may act out or become upset.

Their occasional trips into town sometimes result in damage to personal property, but they are protected; and no one can do anything about it. Tailless, and known locally as Barbary Apes or Rock Apes, they are really monkeys! (Locals call them monos, which means monkeys). All Gibraltar Barbary Macaques are descended from the North African populations of Barbary Macaques, and DNA evidence has established that the present population of Gibraltar macaques is of relatively recent Algerian and Moroccan origin. The presence of the monkeys is documented as being on the Rock before it was captured by the British in 1704. The original introduction of the macaques was most likely orchestrated by the Moors who occupied southern Iberia, also including Spain and Portugal, between 711 and 1492, and who kept them as pets. The popular belief is that as long as the famed Gibraltar Barbary Macaques exist on Gibraltar, the territory will remain under British rule. In 1942, during World War II, after they dwindled to a mere handful of just seven monkeys, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill ordered their numbers be restored immediately from forests in Morocco and Algeria, because of this belief. It is surmised Gibraltar is linked to Africa by a subterranean passage of 15 miles that begins at Lower St. Michael's Cave and passes under the great Strait of Gibraltar, and that this is how the Gibraltar Barbary Macaques originally migrated to the rock. After WWII they were protected and cared for by the British Military, and today they are cared for by the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society. They are now comeback kids!

Book excerpt: The Barbary macaque (all too often mistakenly called an ape) was first brought to the attention of the Conservation Working Party of the Primate Society of Great Britain late 1979 when John Fa reported that 'surplus' animals were being sent from Gibraltar to dubious locations, such as an Italian safari park. Since there had been no scientific input into the Army's management of the monkey colony on Gibraltar, and there was concern about inbreeding, nutrition and health - about the long-term viability of the colony, it was felt that the Society could help. The Gibraltar Scientific Authority and the Army were very receptive to our offer and ideas, and this topic occupied successive chairmen over the last few years - Robin Dunbar and Richard Wrangham, myself and now Miranda Stevenson - with constant prompting and help from John Fa. Considerations soon extended to the status of the species as a whole, so that there have been three main aspects:- (1) the improved health of a larger self-sustaining population on Gibraltar, (2) the status and behavioural biology of natural populations in North Africa (Morocco and Algeria), and (3) the breeding achievements in European parks and zoos, and their potential for reintroduction to suitable areas in North Africa, along with other possibilities. Robin Dunbar organized the compilation of recommendations for managing the Gibraltar colony with regard to numbers, age-sex struc ture and behavioural relationships, with some observations on diet to avoid obesity and infertility.

Yes, it is true that New Guinea is a fascinating microcosm, it has fascinating birds and people, and it has large expanses of undisturbed rainforest. In the course of my work there, helping the Indonesian government and World Wildlife Fund set up a comprehensive national park system, I have been able to study animals in areas without any human population. But New Guinea has one serious drawback: it has no primates, except for humans. Thus, I come to this conference on primate conservation as an underprivileged and emotionally deprived observer, rather than as an involved participant. Nevertheless, it is easy for anyone to become interested in primate conserva tion. The public cares about primates. More specifically, to state things more realistically, many people care some of the time about some primates. Primates are rivaled only by birds, pandas, and the big cats in their public appeal. For some other groups of animals, the best we can say is that few people care about them, infrequently. For most groups of animals, no one cares about them, ever.
