Book Born in a Mighty Bad Land

Download or read book Born in a Mighty Bad Land written by Jerry H. Bryant and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of the violent man in the African American imagination has a long history. He can be found in 19th-century bad man ballads like "Stagolee" and "John Hardy," as well as in the black convict recitations that influenced "gangsta" rap. "Born in a Mighty Bad Land" connects this figure with similar characters in African American fiction. Many writers -- McKay and Hurston in the Harlem Renaissance; Wright, Baldwin, and Ellison in the '40s and '50s; Himes in the '50s and '60s -- saw the "bad nigger" as an archetypal figure in the black imagination and psyche. "Blaxploitation" novels in the '70s made him a virtually mythical character. More recently, Mosley, Wideman, and Morrison have presented him as ghetto philosopher and cultural adventurer. Behind the folklore and fiction, many theories have been proposed to explain the source of the bad man's intra-racial violence. Jerry H. Bryant explores all of these elements in a wide-ranging and illuminating look at one of the most misunderstood figures in African American culture.

Book excerpt: As worldwide law enforcement's facial recognition software improved by leaps and bounds, criminal cartels around the globe scrambled to find a solution to defeat the new and improved identity system. One cartel, in particular, using an unlimited pool of resources, designed a foolproof way to give the underworld a new face. Or so they thought. Until a pair of twins and a small California high desert police department pulled the thread that would unravel their well-oiled machine. A gruesome murder would lead to a hidden surgical suite where missing migrants were used as tissue donors for clandestine facial reconstruction surgery. A manhunt through the sage and cactus of the high desert would lead three detectives to a final showdown with a pair of ex-military butchers hired by the cartel. At least they thought the case was closed. However, the greed from within the organization would ultimately ignite a new flashpoint with the cartel's head man sending in a team of assassins and a beautiful woman hacker to erase both people and secret files. Files kept of the cartel's surgical clients as they were before and after facial reconstruction. It then became a race against time. If the encryption on each file were broken and the files sent to Interpol, then the cartel itself would become a worldwide target to every criminal with a new face.

  • Pages : 221 pages

Download or read book Brighton Beach Badlands written by William R. Kennedy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-04 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid collapse of the Soviet system offered the powerful and dangerous Josef Urikovich and his brother Uri the opportunity to spread the existing Russian criminal network to America. Their headquarters was in Brighton Beach, the area of southeast Brooklyn bordering Coney Island in New York City which unofficially was known as the home base of the Russian Mafia. It was a closed world inhospitable to outsiders. Uri developed a close relationship with Russell Boyd when they both served with the American military forces in Afghanistan. Boyd's profession as a Major League Baseball player with the New Jersey Greys fit uniquely into a plan developed by the brothers to compete with the well-established traditional mafia in America. A unique reward was Boyds's recompense for his participation. A love affair was an unexpected dividend. Terrorist threats within the United States became the bargaining chip between the Russians and the Federal Bureau of Investigation which further aided the newcomers in their quest to become a significant criminal force in America. In his fourth novel, Bill Kennedy has taken his signature approach to adding a fictional flavor to current events to form a thoroughly enjoyable reading adventure.
