  • Pages : 604 pages

Download or read book 28 Maori Battalion written by Joseph Frederick Cody and published by John Douglas Pub.. This book was released on 1956 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Douglas Publishing is delighted to be able to produce this work with kind permission from Manatu Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage and the 28 Maori Battalion Association. This is the official history of one of the greatest fighting infantry units of World War II, the 28(Maori) Battalion. We have done everything possible to ensure the book is as close to the original, printed in 1956. As Lieutenant-General Bernard Freyberg wrote in the Foreword to the book: "In this history you will read the whole story - how they went overseas from New Zealand in 1940, with the Second Echelon to England, to take part in 'The Battle of Britain'. When the threat of invasion diminished they re-embarked for the Middle East, and arrived in time to take part in the disastrous campaigns in Greece and Crete. Later they fought in the 1941 Libyan Campaign and in the battles in 1942 in defence of Egypt. Later, when the tide changed, they took an active part in the victorious Western Desert Campaign, under Generals Alexander and Montgomery. They finished the war in Italy on the 2nd May 1945. "In all these many campaigns this Battalion took a great part, often a decisive part, in the fighting, as in the counter-attacks at Maleme and 42nd Street in the Cretan Campaign, or again in the Battle of Tebaga Gap, where gallant and young Ngarimu gained his posthumous Victoria Cross, or in the capture of Takrouna. But as glorious as these battles were, and as gallant and brave as was the Maori part, it is not only of their bravery but what fine fighting men they were. "To know and appreciate their great qualities you must understand their background and their tribal traditions. Maori are a fighting race, and according to their traditions and in keeping with the laws of New Zealand, they did not come under the National Service Act, which called up men when they reached the military age. The Maori was always a volunteer. For them it was an honour to serve.

Book Transgressing Tikanga

Download or read book Transgressing Tikanga written by Trevor Bentley and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transgressing Tikanga is a collection of [twenty] first-hand accounts written by Europeans who were captured by Maori between 1816 and 1884. These Pakeha men and women were seized when they either committed blatant acts of aggression or unknowingly transgressed tikanga Maori (customary law), for which utu was required. These captivity narratives are packed with drama and action, and are not always easy reading, but they create a vivid picture of nineteenth-century interactions between Maori and Pakeha. They provide a rich insight into early Maori life, including the principals of captivity and utu, social order, religious practices, everyday customs, and the conduct of warfare. With notes that give detailed historical context, Transgressing Tikanga makes an important contribution to understanding the cross-cultural tensions from which contemporary New Zealand society has emerged."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Operation Mercury, the German airborne assault on the island of Crete in May 1941, was the first strategic use of airborne forces in history. The assault began on 20 May, with landings near the island's key airports, and reinforcements the next day allowed the German forces to capture one end of the runway at Maleme. By 24 May, the Germans were being reinforced by air on a huge scale and on 1 June Crete surrendered. This book describes how desperately close the battle had been and explains how German losses so shocked the Führer that he never again authorised a major airborne operation.

Book excerpt: Conversatio looks at the astounding practice of leading photographer Anne Noble, set against the issues of ecosystem collapse and climate change and examining what an artist can do in response. Its creative focus is on that most important insect, the European bee. Reminiscent of an artist book in its extensive visual content, its appeal is to a wide readership curious about art, ecology, science, literature and their intersections. Through Noble's art and newly commissioned essays, the book traverses Noble's deep interest in how humans relate to bees. From images of communities of bees to tintype photographs showing the beauty of translucent bee wings, photograms from the wings of dead bees and a black and white series of electron microscope images, Noble's photographs present the hive life of bees in rich detail. Like the finest honey this book is a treasure.

Book excerpt: "As World War Two finally ends, Lieutenant Tama Ratahi of B Company of the 28th (Māori) Battalion finds himself in Italy. Impatiently waiting to be repatriated, he travels to Venice where he fleetingly meets the attractive and equally dangerous Susan Moretti. When, several years later, she tracks him down in New Zealand, his life and that of his family is irretrievably changed. Cousins Tom Murphy and Jack Fleming also return after serving on NZHMS Achilles and Gambia in the Pacific war. Tom goes back to the family farm at Mokau to make good past mistakes while Jack jumps ship to start a new life in America, but civilian life is not what anybody expects, even for those who stayed home as fate has other plans as the devious and determined Fay Carrington seeks to steal a life from the woman she calls a friend. These are the lucky years where those fortunate enough to survive, go on to make what they can of their lives. Some settle down to raise families, but others who survived on the adrenalin of war seek adventure where they can and at any cost."--Book cover.
