Book Awesome Adventures of an Immigrant

Download or read book Awesome Adventures of an Immigrant written by Art Zegelaar and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-09-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is a new-comer to New Zealand. In the footsteps of Abel Tasman the author might have thought New Zealand to be a Dutch Colony! Life in the far North soon revealed characteristics that proved myopic aspirations were hard at work. But the author has a contagious sense of humour. And without the fine tuned skills in English expression the inimitable style of his book adds colour and fascination to the events he describes. I think the reader will be able to identify with some of the humorous situations and has probably met some of the officious personalities who take centre stage in a parochial community. To read this book written from a fresh perspective should be a therapeutic exercise to some of us too cloistered in some secluded pockets of post-imperialism and should be on the bookshelf of every immigrant wishing to understand the heart beat of their newly elected country.

Book excerpt: This book is a sequel to the author's first book 'Awesome Adventures of an Immigrant' where he went into the footsteps of Abel Tasman to discover New Zealand. Upon returning to his home country he felt like a new-comer. In the same pointy style guided by his imaginary opponent 'Hugo' the author tries to make sense of his country by following some history of it. As in New Zealand some myopic characters are at work, and the peculiar mind of the author puts a magnifying glass on them. Without the fine tuned skills in English expression the inimitable style of his writing adds color and fascination to the events he describes. I think the reader will be able to identify with some of the humorous situations and has probably met some of the personalities which are rooted into far historic mythos. In this he lays down his own weaknesses and to read the book written from a fresh perspective should be a therapeutic exercise to some of us too cloistered and should be on the bookshelf of everyone traveling or dealing with some aspects of dutch life. As the tale progresses, these aspects might be more than many people would realize.

Book Albert s Journey Footprints of an Immigrant

Download or read book Albert s Journey Footprints of an Immigrant written by Dolores A. Kelly and published by Cold Pond Press. This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of an uncle, born in a sleepy Italian town, who came to the United States during the great wave of immigration in the first decades of the 20th Century and who eventually set out on his own path, moving to California and planting his own family roots. While the book is filled with photos and lots of stories about his life growing up, going to high school, finding his true love, and building a wide circle of family and friends, it also is a story about a young immigrant boy who - thousands of miles away from his familiar, comfortable boyhood home - decided to discover for himself all that his new country had to offer. While his story starts many years ago, Albert's Journey is much like the many millions of immigrants who came to the United States - and still come - to find a better life. It's a warm, humorous reminder that anybody new and unfamiliar in our country is really, at the heart of it, not that much different from any of us who desire a happy life full of love, family, friends, and a passion for doing whatever we hope to do. The book is ideal for young preteen and adolescent readers who, in studying the history of immigration in their school history and social science classes, want to learn more about the personal experiences and adventures that immigrants, especially those close to their age, found in their new national home. The book is filled with photos, used with permission, from family albums, archives, and friends.

O'Shea had saved enough money to buy passage to the United States. Upon his arrival in New York City, Patrick used his ambition and determination, mixed with a dash of Irish malarkey, to set himself up with a job and a new life. This recipe served him well throughout his adventures that led him from New York City to the Territory of Hawaii and throughout the world. Along the way, Patrick married the love of his life, Arabell. Together they raised their family against the backdrop of World War II and other life-changing historical events. Patrick's life story is the universal story of many immigrants to the United States of America. He came, he prospered, and he proudly became a U.S. citizen. Patrick wanted his story told to encourage others to persevere despite obstacles and setbacks, to do one's best at any task, and to always conduct oneself with honor and dignity.

Book This Land Is Our Land

Download or read book This Land Is Our Land written by Linda Barrett Osborne and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Finalist, Linda Barrett Osborne’s This Land is Our Land “explores the history of American immigration from the early colonization of the continent to the contemporary discussions involving undocumented aliens.”* American attitudes toward immigrants are paradoxical. On the one hand, we see our country as a haven for the poor and oppressed; anyone, no matter his or her background, can find freedom here and achieve the “American Dream.” On the other hand, depending on prevailing economic conditions, fluctuating feelings about race and ethnicity, and fear of foreign political and labor agitation, we set boundaries and restrictions on who may come to this country and whether they may stay as citizens. This book explores the way government policy and popular responses to immigrant groups evolved throughout US history, particularly between 1800 and 1965. The book concludes with a summary of events up to contemporary times, as immigration again becomes a hot-button issue. “Exceptional . . . Outstanding archival photographs and illustrations complement the comprehensive text and encourage thoughtful discussion . . . An excellent time line and end notes and a thorough bibliography make this an effective research tool.” —*School Library Journal (Starred Review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Restless Books Prize for New Immigrant Writing, Priyanka Champaneri’s transcendent debut novel brings us inside India’s holy city of Banaras, where the manager of a death hostel shepherds the dying who seek the release of a good death, while his own past refuses to let him go. Banaras, Varanasi, Kashi: India’s holy city on the banks of the Ganges has many names but holds one ultimate promise for Hindus. It is the place where pilgrims come for a good death, to be released from the cycle of reincarnation by purifying fire. As the dutiful manager of a death hostel in Kashi, Pramesh welcomes the dying and assists families bound for the funeral pyres that burn constantly on the ghats. The soul is gone, the body is burnt, the time is past, he tells them. Detach. After ten years in the timeless city, Pramesh can nearly persuade himself that here, there is no past or future. He lives contentedly at the death hostel with his wife, Shobha, their young daughter, Rani, the hostel priests, his hapless but winning assistant, and the constant flow of families with their dying. But one day the past arrives in the lifeless form of a man pulled from the river—a man with an uncanny resemblance to Pramesh. Called “twins” in their childhood village, he and his cousin Sagar are inseparable until Pramesh leaves to see the outside world and Sagar stays to tend the land. After Pramesh marries Shobha, defying his family’s wishes, a rift opens up between the cousins that he has long since tried to forget. Do not look back. Detach. But for Shobha, Sagar’s reemergence casts a shadow over the life she’s built for her family. Soon, an unwelcome guest takes up residence in the death hostel, the dying mysteriously continue to live, and Pramesh is forced to confront his own ideas about death, rebirth, and redemption. Told in lush, vivid detail and with an unforgettable cast of characters, The City of Good Death is a remarkable debut novel of family and love, memory and ritual, and the ways in which we honor the living and the dead. PRAISE FOR THE CITY OF GOOD DEATH “In Champaneri’s ambitious, vivid debut, the dying come to the holy city of Kashi to die a good death that frees them from the burden of reincarnation…. In sharp prose, Champaneri explores the power of stories—those the characters tell themselves, those told about them, and those they believe. . . . This epic, magical story of death teems with life.” —Publishers Weekly “Brimming with characters whose lives overlap and whose stories interweave, Champaneri’s exquisite debut delves into the consequences of the past, and how stories that are told can become reality even when they contain barely a shred of truth. As Pramesh discovers, the bitterness of past wounds can bring hope for redemption and life.” —Bridget Thoreson, Booklist “Lush prose evokes the thick, close atmosphere of Kashi and the intricate religious practices upon which life and death depend. Rumor and superstition hold sway over even the most level-headed people, twisting what’s explainable into something extraordinary—with tragic consequences. . . . The City of Good Death is a breathtaking, unforgettable novel about how remembering the past is just as important as moving on.” —Eileen Gonzalez, Foreword Reviews, Starred Review "Champaneri’s Kashi is teeming and vivid . . . the book frequently charms, and it's as full of humor, warmth, and mystery as Kashi’s own marketplace." —Kirkus Reviews “The City of Good Death is the debut novel of Priyanka Champaneri but it has the confidence of a master storyteller. Drawing on the rich literary traditions of Salman Rushdie and Arundhati Roy, Champaneri’s epic saga will satisfy armchair travelers thirsty for adventure, and sick of looking out their windows.” —Chicago Review of Books "In intricate detail and with remarkable skill, Champaneri writes a powerful tale about the pull of the past and our aching need to understand the mysteries and misunderstandings that thwart our relationships. An atmospheric and immersive debut with a rich cast of characters you won’t soon forget." —Marjan Kamali, author of The Stationery Shop
