Book Developing a Portable Automated Biomonitoring System for Aquatic Hazard Evaluation

Download or read book Developing a Portable Automated Biomonitoring System for Aquatic Hazard Evaluation written by EL. Morgan and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1986, an intensive aquatic biological testing program was carried out over a 45-day period in an attempt to evaluate possible toxicity in an important fishery resource in the French Broad River of East Tennessee. Since 1969 a marked decline in sauger (Stizostedion canadense) populations has occurred below Douglas Dam. In addition to toxicity tests with the water flea (Ceriodaphnia spp.), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas), and sauger in various life stages, a portable automated fish breathing rate biomonitoring system (AFIRMS) was field tested at streamside in a mobile bioassay trailer. The personal computer based AFIRMS was equipped with 24 channels for continuously monitoring adult sauger breathing activities and various physical sensors. Though all the tests revealed no apparent toxicity in the tailwater reaches of the river, a simulated field test with AFIRMS using toxic leachate from a landfill source induced immediate sauger responses and ultimate mortality to most of the test animals.

Book Freshwater Biological Monitoring

Download or read book Freshwater Biological Monitoring written by D. Pascoe and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater Biological Monitoring contains the proceedings of a Specialized Conference held in Cardiff, Wales, on September 12-14, 1984. Contributors explore advances in freshwater biological monitoring, paying particular attention to the interpretation of traditional community surveillance studies by means of the modern computer and multivariate statistical techniques and how such field community responses are related to laboratory studies of pollutants. The design, validation, and use of novel monitoring systems employing plants, invertebrates, and fish are considered, along with developments in the in vitro assessment of mutagenicity of chemicals present in water. This book is comprised of 16 chapters and begins with a review of issues surrounding the tests used in biological monitoring and the ways in which the information will be used. The discussion then turns to the usefulness of the colonization sampler in collecting macroinvertebrates indicative of river water quality in lowland rivers; biological assessment of water quality and conservation evaluation in Welsh rivers; and water chemistry, benthos, and drift in a fast-flowing river. The following chapters focus on eutrophication in rivers; toxicity testing with freshwater macroinvertebrates; and compliance biomonitoring. This monograph will be of value to policymakers and environmentalists concerned with water pollution control.

Book Methods to Improve the Sensitivity of an Automated Biomonitoring System

Download or read book Methods to Improve the Sensitivity of an Automated Biomonitoring System written by C. Frago and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biomonitoring system was designed to assess changes in toxicity of wastewater or surface water on a real-time basis using fish as the sensors. Previous research indicated that there were other responses in addition to the breathing rate which might be equally or more sensitive to changes in toxicity. These included fish activity (turns and episodes) and changes in the shape of the waveform generated as the fish breathes. To investigate the usefulness of these responses, four methods were used: strip-chart recordings, split-screen video techniques, Fast Fourier Transformation techniques, and a data replay software program. As a result of this research, the software of the biomonitoring system has been modified to include the additional responses which showed promise to increase the sensitivity of the system. Field testing of the system will be the next step.

Book Evaluation of an Automated Biological Monitoring System at an Industrial Site

Download or read book Evaluation of an Automated Biological Monitoring System at an Industrial Site written by WH. van der Schalie and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of using biological monitoring of industrial point sources as a tool for river management has been demonstrated by a number of laboratory simulations. However, it is another task entirely to move these techniques to an industrial setting. The necessary modifications of a computerized biological monitoring system to install it in the Celanese Corporation Plant on the New River in Virginia are described. The system employs the respiration rates of bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus) as an indicator of abnormal variations in the effluent.

Book An Automated Biological Monitoring Facility for Rapidly and Continuously Assessing Industrial Effluents

Download or read book An Automated Biological Monitoring Facility for Rapidly and Continuously Assessing Industrial Effluents written by KL. Dickson and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuous and automatic biological monitoring facility has been developed to measure the toxicity of industrial effluents to aquatic organisms. The ventilatory rates of bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus, are monitored with the aid of a minicomputer. The biomonitoring and auxiliary components have been housed within a 9.75 by 3.66-m (32 by 12-ft) trailer to facilitate on-site monitoring. Other incorporations include a continuous-flow acute bioassay unit, probes for monitoring conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and temperature, and an automatic water sampler. Initial testing employing the petroleum industry's arbitrary reference mixture, two synthetic chlorinated effluents, and an effluent from a U.S. Army ammunition plant has demonstrated the potential of the present system for monitoring industrial wastewaters.

Book Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals

Download or read book Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-10-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomonitoring—a method for measuring amounts of toxic chemicals in human tissues—is a valuable tool for studying potentially harmful environmental chemicals. Biomonitoring data have been used to confirm exposures to chemicals and validate public health policies. For example, population biomonitoring data showing high blood lead concentrations resulted in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) regulatory reduction of lead in gasoline; biomonitoring data confirmed a resultant drop in blood lead concentrations. Despite recent advances, the science needed to understand the implications of the biomonitoring data for human health is still in its nascent stages. Use of the data also raises communication and ethical challenges. In response to a congressional request, EPA asked the National Research Council to address those challenges in an independent study. Human Biomonitoring for Environmental Chemicals provides a framework for improving the use of biomonitoring data including developing and using biomarkers (measures of exposure), research to improve the interpretation of data, ways to communicate findings to the public, and a review of ethical issues.
