Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autointoxication or Intestinal Toxemia It 15 not claimed that diet alone is capable of doing all that can be done in these cases, and it is, of course, expected that other rational meas ures will be simultaneously employed. But diet is certainly the dominant factor. Especial prominence is given to the milk regimen and the fruit regimen, because these two have been found most efficient. Variousother useful and efficient regimens have been worked out and are occasionally used. Although a milk diet has been recognized as a therapeutic measure, and employed in the treat ment of various acute and chronic maladies since the time of Hippocrates, its use in this manner even at the present time has been largely, if not altogether, empirical. The rationale of its use has not been understood, and hence it is not surprising that this exceedingly valuable cur ative means has been little appreciated. The same may be said in relation to the grape and other fruit cures, which from the most ancient times have been more or less in vogue, especially in certain countries. Thanks to the labors of Pavlov, Pasteur, Tissier, M'etchnikoff and vari ous other physiologists and bacteriologists there has been developed within recent years the neces sary scientific data upon which to base a sound rationale for the milk regimen, and fruit regi men and various other special regimens, and to perfect exact and efficient methods for the em ployment of these physiologic and remarkably efficient methods of dealing with a class of dis orders which have baffled the most persevering efforts alike of internists and surgeons. Book Intestinal Auto Intoxication

Download or read book Intestinal Auto Intoxication written by Adolphe Combe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intestinal Auto-Intoxication: Together With an Appendix on the Lactic Ferments With Particular Reference to Their Application in Intestinal Therapeutics The object of this book is to make my methods of treatment known. As clinical professor of children's diseases, I have had occasion many times to occupy myself with the intestinal disorders so frequently met with in children. Circumstances have also, for several years past, obliged me to see many adults suffering from intestinal affections, and it is the ensemble of these two classes of patients that has occasioned my study of the digestive diseases from a nearer point of view. As physician to children and specialist in that branch, I had as a matter of fact, not particularly studied the affections of the digestive tract until then; moreover, having but little familiarity with their classical treatment, I was very naturally led to create for myself personal methods and special procedures. Among these disorders there is one, which by its frequency and its importance, has more especially attracted my attention, and that is Gastro-intestinal auto-intoxication. It has led me to seek out its pathogeny, to establish its symptomology and diagnostic features and to study its rational treatment. From different quarters I have been asked to publish the results of my methods of treatment. To this invitation I have very willingly responded and that is the genesis of this work, which is dedicated to the history of digestive auto-intoxication. I have reserved in it, an important place for the treatment, for that is the practical side, to which all medical study should lead. The regimen in this condition has been the object of my constant preoccupation. I attach so great an importance to it, that I have had organized throughout Switzerland, in many hotels, tables of regimen where, under the direction of special and responsible cooks, my dietetic prescriptions are scrupulously followed. Book excerpt: Modern spas are wellness resorts that offer beauty treatments, massages and complementary therapies. Victorian spas were sanitariums, providing "water cure" treatments supplemented by massage, vibration, electricity and radioactivity. Rooted in the palliative health reforms of the early 19th century, spas of the Victorian Age grew out of the hydrotherapy institutions of the 1840s--an alternative to the horrors of bleeding and purging. The regimen focused on diet, rest, cessation of alcohol and foods that upset the stomach, stress reduction and plenty of water. The treatments, though sometimes of a dubious nature, formed the transition from the primitive methods of "heroic medicine" to the era of scientifically based practices.

Book The Kelloggs

Download or read book The Kelloggs written by Howard Markel and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ***2017 National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist for Nonfiction*** "What's more American than Corn Flakes?" —Bing Crosby From the much admired medical historian (“Markel shows just how compelling the medical history can be”—Andrea Barrett) and author of An Anatomy of Addiction (“Absorbing, vivid”—Sherwin Nuland, The New York Times Book Review, front page)—the story of America’s empire builders: John and Will Kellogg. John Harvey Kellogg was one of America’s most beloved physicians; a best-selling author, lecturer, and health-magazine publisher; founder of the Battle Creek Sanitarium; and patron saint of the pursuit of wellness. His youngest brother, Will, was the founder of the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, which revolutionized the mass production of food and what we eat for breakfast. In The Kelloggs, Howard Markel tells the sweeping saga of these two extraordinary men, whose lifelong competition and enmity toward one another changed America’s notion of health and wellness from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries, and who helped change the course of American medicine, nutrition, wellness, and diet. The Kelloggs were of Puritan stock, a family that came to the shores of New England in the mid-seventeenth century, that became one of the biggest in the county, and then renounced it all for the religious calling of Ellen Harmon White, a self-proclaimed prophetess, and James White, whose new Seventh-day Adventist theology was based on Christian principles and sound body, mind, and hygiene rules—Ellen called it “health reform.” The Whites groomed the young John Kellogg for a central role in the Seventh-day Adventist Church and sent him to America’s finest Medical College. Kellogg’s main medical focus—and America’s number one malady: indigestion (Walt Whitman described it as “the great American evil”). Markel gives us the life and times of the Kellogg brothers of Battle Creek: Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his world-famous Battle Creek Sanitarium medical center, spa, and grand hotel attracted thousands actively pursuing health and well-being. Among the guests: Mary Todd Lincoln, Amelia Earhart, Booker T. Washington, Johnny Weissmuller, Dale Carnegie, Sojourner Truth, Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and George Bernard Shaw. And the presidents he advised: Taft, Harding, Hoover, and Roosevelt, with first lady Eleanor. The brothers Kellogg experimented on malt, wheat, and corn meal, and, tinkering with special ovens and toasting devices, came up with a ready-to-eat, easily digested cereal they called Corn Flakes. As Markel chronicles the Kelloggs’ fascinating, Magnificent Ambersons–like ascent into the pantheon of American industrialists, we see the vast changes in American social mores that took shape in diet, health, medicine, philanthropy, and food manufacturing during seven decades—changing the lives of millions and helping to shape our industrial age.
