Book The Economics of Tourism

Download or read book The Economics of Tourism written by Mike J. Stabler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of The Economics of Tourism reflects the tremendous changes that have occurred in the tourism sector in the last twelve years. It recognizes that the nature of tourism demand and supply is being transformed by innovations in information communication technologies, market liberalization and climate change. Paralleling this, there is much greater interest in the study of tourism by both students and researchers in mainstream economics. The text is now in four parts covering: demand; supply; national, regional and international matters and environmental issues. The concluding chapter appraises the state of the economic research into tourism. The increased interest in tourism has engendered the development of new methods of analysis and the refinement of established ones. Accordingly, the book has been extensively restructured, revised and expanded with two new chapters: chapter six of the first edition is now broken down into two and a new chapter has been added on environmental issues to take account of new developments, critically review the associated literature and consider future trends in tourism economics research. The reader-friendliness of the book has also been enhanced in various ways, such as the extensive chapter cross-referencing to refresh the reader’s memory and the inclusion of a detailed list of abbreviations. The Economics of Tourism will continue to make accessible for the non-specialist, the application and relevance of economics to tourism. Extensively revised and updated, including research and case studies the textbook will be an indispensable resource for both students and researchers.

Book excerpt: In April 2005, the research paper into Assistance to Tourism: Exploratory Estimates, was released. It is the first comprehensive attempt to quantify the extent of assistance to tourism on a comparable basis to that for other industries in Australia. While care is needed in interpreting the results, the estimates suggest that tourism receives a lower rate of Australian Government assistance than the average for the manufacturing and primary sectors, but more than for other service industries. Assistance measures include destination marketing and support for high-profile cultural or sporting events, and funding for art galleries, national parks and transport. This latest research extends the work the Commission and its predecessors have undertaken on tariffs, budgetary and other assistance, particularly in respect to manufacturing, agriculture and more recently, services.

Book The Economics of Small Island Tourism

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study forms an entirely new area of research on Small Island Tourism Economies (SITEs). It addresses the importance of uncertainty in monthly international tourist arrivals and country risk indicators to the macroeconomy. Conditional volatilities are estimated for international tourist arrivals, and an economic interpretation from the estimated results is provided. In achieving these two objectives, this work presents an extensive assessment of the important characteristics and the impact of tourism in SITEs in relation to their gross domestic product, balance of payments, employment and foreign direct investment, among other factors. This book is unique in giving emphasis to macroeconomic implications rather than an industry focus. The Economics of Small Island Tourism will appeal to academics at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels involved in environmental and tourism management as well as tourism economics.
