Book excerpt: Throughout the world, the number of festivals has grown exponentially in the last two decades, as people celebrate local and regional cultures, but perhaps more importantly as local councils and other groups seek to use festivals both to promote tourism and to stimulate rural development. However, most studies of festivals have tended to focus almost exclusively on the cultural and symbolic aspects, or on narrow modelling of economic multiplier impacts, rather than examining their long-term implications for rural change. This book therefore has an original focus. It is structured in two parts: the first discusses broad issues affecting music festivals globally, especially in the context of rural revitalisation. The second part looks in more detail at a range of types of festivals commonly found throughout North America, Europe and Australasia, such as country music, jazz, opera and alternative music festivals. The authors draw on in-depth research undertaken over the past five years in a range of Australian places, which traces the overall growth of festivals of various kinds, examines four of the more important and distinctive music festivals, and makes clear conclusions on their significance for rural and regional change.

The new millennium calls for a reconsideration of this legacy and an exploration of the work of women artists in defining the art of Sydney in the 21st century - Destination Sydney: The natural world is a response to this call.This is the third (and final) iteration of the Destination Sydney series, developed and presented by Manly Art Gallery & Museum, Mosman Art Gallery and S. H. Ervin Gallery. The first two exhibitions featured well known Australian artists whose landscape visions of Sydney changed our perception of the city. The nine artists each showed the wide range and complexities of landscape paintings and demonstrated their popularity in Australian art. This third iteration now brings the series up to date and showcases a broader range of media to include painting, photography, sculpture and ceramics. All but one of the artists is living and in a nod to contemporary curatorial thinking and practice, all of the artists and their associated essayists are female. Each of the artists has created works that are becoming synonymous with the Sydney landscape, in new and innovative ways. The strap line of the exhibition, The natural world, clearly identifies the intention to show artists whose interests are again landscape and landforms, but with the added analytical appreciation and understanding of the environment. Artists selected for this exhibition include Joan Ross, Fiona Lowry, Merran Esson (Manly Art Gallery & Museum), Janet Laurence, Caroline Rothwell, Robyn Stacey (Mosman Art Gallery), and Bronwyn Oliver, Juz Kitson and Jennifer Keeler-Milne (S.H. These, and the festivals which immediately preceded them, were staged at a time of renewal in Australian political and cultural life and a new awakening of national identity. The emphasis is on the first festival in 1972 as this was the ground-breaking event which, if it did not conceive Aussie pub rock was, at the very least, the midwife. In that birth can be seen the beginnings of Australian rock music transitioning from a poor cousin to that in America and the United Kingdom to an active export industry. Sunbury '72 is covered in detail, with the emphasis on subsequent festivals being on the changes which occurred both in the event and in the dominant music scene at the time. The book identifies the strength of the Sunbury festivals in the organisation that lay behind them, which allowed them to be more than just a single event. It also explores the musical highlights of the festivals and the experiences of those who attended. The book is heavily based on official documents and an extensive oral history program undertaken by the author.
