Book excerpt: SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM NETFLIX AND ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR KATHRYN BIGELOW “Fantastic story, a real page-turner. Impossible to put down." – Stephen King From the author of Cold Storage comes a riveting, eerily plausible thriller, told with the menace and flair of Under the Dome or Project Hail Mary, in which a worldwide cataclysm plays out in the lives of one complicated Midwestern family. In Aurora, Illinois, Aubrey Wheeler is just trying to get by after her semi-criminal ex-husband split, leaving behind his unruly teenage son. Then the lights go out—not just in Aurora but across the globe. A solar storm has knocked out power almost everywhere. Suddenly, all problems are local, very local, and Aubrey must assume the mantle of fierce protector of her suburban neighborhood. Across the country lives Aubrey’s estranged brother, Thom. A fantastically wealthy, neurotically over-prepared Silicon Valley CEO, he plans to ride out the crisis in a gilded desert bunker he built for maximum comfort and security. But the complicated history between the siblings is far from over, and what feels like the end of the world is just the beginning of several long-overdue reckonings—which not everyone will survive . . . Aurora is suspenseful storytelling—both large scale and small—at its finest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph G. Stolp settled in Aurora on June 12, 1837, when there were 33 residents in the pioneer village. Stolp's vision helped shape the city's destiny. The Aurora Electric Light and Power Company used 2,000-candlepower electric lamps for the first streetlights in 1881. Today, the "City of Lights" is home to 200,000 residents and a diverse population with 42 percent of Hispanic heritage. The character of her people made Aurora an enterprising city. Notable residents include Maud Powell, violin virtuoso, and Harry C. Murphy, president of the Burlington Railroad. Profiles of Greek immigrant George Andrews and Aurora-born artist Wendell Minor, as well as Polish leader Bruno Bartoszek, color these pages with biographies of greatness. Astute business leaders include Robert Bonifas, Ken Nagel, Louis Leonardi, and Frank C. Schaefer. Dr. Stephanie Pace Marshall, Dr. Christine Sobek, and Dick Schindel give testament to adroit educational leadership. Legendary Locals of Aurora chronicles how the city's history has been blessed with noble and innovative leaders.

Book excerpt: Aurora Boswell, an African American woman in her late forties, has worked her way up the corporate ladder at the City Conference and Exhibition Center in Memphis, Tennessee. But apparently, her ladder of success has just hit a very low ceiling. Trying to work hard and prove herself worthy of advancement does nothing to convince those above her that Aurora deserves to be promoted. She is repeatedly denied promotions while younger, less-qualified employees are given the higher-paying jobs for which she applies. After being harassed by some of her female coworkers, Aurora files a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and is wrongfully terminated from her job. The backstabbing, lying, and underhanded tactics used by Executive Director Gary Davis and his "band of idiots" are not just unnerving, but are proof positive of the lows to which people will stoop to make another's life miserable. Aurora's immediate supervisor, Lou Ann Houser, is not a bright woman, and her scheming ways just might come back to haunt her once the case reaches the courtroom. Aurora's lawyer is determined to prove to the court the real personalities of the people in management. Will Aurora have the personal strength to stand up and fight for her rights?

Book Intersectional Feminist Readings of Comics

Download or read book Intersectional Feminist Readings of Comics written by Sandra Cox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intersectional Feminist Readings of Comics collects several theoretically informed close reading of comics and graphic literature that apply an intersectional feminist lens to the interpretation of several contemporary North American graphic narratives. The essays examine use a range of interpretive lenses drawn from theoretical models used in contemporary aesthetics, media studies, and literary criticism to analyze mainstream figures like DC’s Catwoman and Marvel’s Miss America and Doctor Strange, to contextualize historical and speculative comics by Indigenous American illustrators, and to explicate autography by critically lauded Jewish, queer and female cartoonists. In the first half of the book, the chapters examine ways in which superhero comics and the cinematic and televisual adaptations thereof, reify, revise and reject gender parity, systemic misogyny and heteropatriarchy through visual and textual rhetorics of representation. In the second part of the volume, the chapters look at the ways that feminist interpretive practices illuminate the radical work undertaken by cartoonists from historically marginalized communities in the U.S. and Canada. Across both halves, readers will find applications of longstanding feminist critical traditions, like ecofeminism, as well as new intersectional extrapolations of narratology, autobiographical studies, and visual rhetoric, which have been applied to the selected comics in insightful and innovative ways. This is a lively and varied collection suitable for students and scholars in gender studies, cultural studies, media studies and literary studies.
