Book Cowboy Poetry from a Short Horn Tenderfoot

Download or read book Cowboy Poetry from a Short Horn Tenderfoot written by Richard Bird Baker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional cowboy lingo, like the old-time maritime vernacular of the sea, and even the jargon of baseball, is so colorfully descriptive that modern, media-molded English sounds bland and trite by comparison. Often a short, cowboy-styled phrase can convey more meaning and sentiment than several paragraphs of modern writ. Thats the heart, soul, and backbone of cowboy poetry. A writer doesnt have to knock his brains out trying to hatch up enough imagery to offset the blandness of modern English, nor does a reader have to scratch his head bald trying to understand the poems.

Book Battles And Victories Of Allen Allensworth A M Ph D Lieutenant Colonel Retired U S Army Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Battles And Victories Of Allen Allensworth A M Ph D Lieutenant Colonel Retired U S Army Illustrated Edition written by Charles Alexander and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. The story of Allen Allensworth is one of true strength and courage in adversity to become the first African-American to attain the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the U.S. Army; this was not his only singular distinction by any means. Born into slavery, he escaped by joining the 44th Illinois Volunteers and later served two years in the Navy. Having studied theology, he was ordained as a minister, and in 1886 he gained an appointment as a military chaplain to a unit of Buffalo Soldiers and served in the US Army for the next 20 years. He was also notable for founding the township of Allensworth, California in 1908; it was intended as an all-black community to be free of the racial discrimination faced by so many at the turn of the 20th century. Although the town failed due to the environmental conditions that surrounded its founding, the remains are preserved as the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. A fascinating biography of an influential and pioneering African-American.

Book Ten Decades in the Life of My Dad

Download or read book Ten Decades in the Life of My Dad written by Marion Elizabeth Fraser and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 20th century heralded the greatest technological changes of any century. My Dad lived through virtually all of it - from 1898 to 1997. He served in two world wars and raised two families. Even though my Dad was a quiet man, he shared with me his stories and he shared with me his soul. His advice was always sage and he took a deep interest in the lives of his children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. Aside from his military service, he was a self employed man - home builder, farmer, logger. This book views the 20th century through his eyes. For me it was a labour of love and an opportunity to revisit the many lessons I learned through knowing him, his life, his hopes, his dreams and his disappointments. His only regret in life was not completing his science degree at Queen’s University. He was in the class of ‘23, enrolling after returning from his overseas service in World War I in which all three of his brothers were wounded. He rarely talked about war, except to say it was a waste. Dad had a great sense of humour. He loved to read and enjoyed good movies and in his later years we watched many movies together. But mostly he worked hard. He always did whatever was necessary, but only after thinking the task through and figuring out the best way to accomplish his goals.

Book Buffalo Wings

Download or read book Buffalo Wings written by Charles A. Hobbie and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As World War II comes to an end in 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies in office. Throughout the country, the greatest generation mourns its leader. A spring snowstorm in Western New York inaugurates the cold war. Chuck Hobbie is just a boy, born on unlucky Friday, April 13th, but fortunate to be a child in Buffalo. As all Buffalonians know, it is not a dazzling city, unless the sparkle of winter snow and the shimmer of reflected summer lights from Erie and Niagara count. Likewise, the city's citizens, families, and teachers are unremarkable, unless resilience, friendships, and quiet, day-to-day hard work matter. Buffalo's children are not special at all, except that they were raised in Buffalo, amid the history of the Niagara Frontier, by people who cared for them and institutions that prepared them to fly. Buffalo's west side is where Chuck comes of age, but his childhood experiences range from there to New Hampshire's White Mountains, a farm in Lewiston, N.Y., Holloway Bay in Ontario, and Alaska's Brooks Range. Join Chuck as he recalls in Buffalo Wings the childhood family, friends, teachers, and experiences that shaped his life in the decades before the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Stories from the View of a Yooper Join us for a trip through Michigan's rural Upper Peninsula in this collection of fictional short stories. Whether it's a sailor who shuns water, an old maid who wants to shoot her cats, or a man who keeps his lover in the junk drawer, the stories range from witty to wry to weepy. Sharon is a master of the short form. As readers of her newspaper column and previous collections will attest, she never disappoints. Her stories will keep you turning the pages and thirsting for more. "Penned by Sharon Kennedy, a hidden gem in the wilds of Michigan's Eastern Upper Peninsula, this book is a fine collection of humorous, satirical, and poignant stories." -Jim Dwyer, Writer, Mackinac Journal "View from the SideRoad weaves vivid tales with warmth and humor. The author really knows how to captivate the reader with tantalizing stories." -Jill Lowe Brumwell, Author of Drummond Island: History, Folklore, and Early People "Sharon Kennedy is one of the Upper Peninsula's premier writers. A well-read columnist in the Eastern U.P., she has turned her attention to writing books and U.P. literature is the better for it. Her stories are reminiscent of Cully Gage's, Northwoods Readers, but with her own spin and style." -Mikel Classen, Author of True Tales: Forgotten History of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, recipient of Charles Follo Award / Historical Society of Michigan "For some sailors, climbing the career ladder on a Great Lakes freighter involves paying a pungent price as illustrated in the story, 'Tank, ' a wonderfully funny portrait of what can happen to a lifelong bachelor oblivious to any sense of personal hygiene. This book is an entertaining read." -Rich Hill, Author of West of the River, North of the Bridge Learn more at www.AuthorSharonKennedy.com From Modern History Press
