Book Family Tradition

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering three generations of Hank Williams, Family Tradition is both unique and vast in scope. Beginning in the present day with Hank III – who gave the author unprecedented access – and time-traveling across the years, this examines just what kind of rebel mojo inspired this crazed family of country music, from Hank Sr. – often regarded as one of the most influential of American musicians – to Hank Jr., to this year's model, Hank III, who has somehow found a way to reconcile his legacy's deep-rooted twang and high-lonesome sound with particularly searing strains of punk and heavy metal, launching an all-out war with traditional Nashville in the process. Listen to Susan Masino live at Book Expo America on the BEA Podcast.

Unfortunately, the senior hottie who won her star-struck heart from the very first moment she saw him has yet to discover she even exists. Inspired by the author's long memory of high school angst and her current work in the film industry as a consultant, My Life Needs Better Writers is a comedy that transcends the generations and affirms that every "Laurie" will know an "Artie" at least once in her life. Hopefully such infatuations will not last more than a semester.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Democracy Dramaturgy is told from the perspective of a cynical deadhead named Mo, who, via the wonders of extraterrestrial time-travel, is able to witness firsthand what his nation has been, as well as what it is becoming. When he is accidentally transported to another planet, Mo finds himself in a once-perfect world that has been overwhelmed by the disabling impact of mindless American television programs from the Seventies and their insipid fictional stars. But the fictional characters are far from the most dangerous Earth-born garbage with which the planet’s inhabitants must deal, as Mo and Martin S. Cribler, former-crusading-turned-suicidal journalist soon discover. Two other “real” Earth men have preceded them to the planet and are actively waging war for the hearts and minds of the populace: Mafia thug Nino D’Rocca and singing television preacher Duncan Heathens. Sometimes hilarious, often enlightening, The Democracy Dramaturgy is the story of Mo’s awakening as he recognizes himself as a fractal representation of the universe in which he resides and finally understands he never needed to change the world. He only needed to accept himself.

Book Television Variety Shows

Download or read book Television Variety Shows written by David M. Inman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the few hundred television viewers in 1946, a special treat on the broadcast schedule was the variety show called Hour Glass. It was the first TV program to go beyond talking heads, cooking demonstrations, and sporting events, featuring instead dancers, comics, singers, and long commercials for its sponsor, Chase and Sanborn coffee. Within two years, another variety show, Texaco Star Theatre, became the first true television hit and would be credited with the sales of thousands of television sets. The variety show formula was a staple of television in its first 30 years, in part because it lent itself to a medium where everything had to be live and preferably inside a studio. Most of the early television stars--including Jackie Gleason, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Ed Sullivan, Red Skelton, Dinah Shore, and Arthur Godfrey--rose to prominence through weekly variety shows. In the 1960s, major stars such as Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Judy Garland and Danny Kaye were hosting variety shows. By the 1970s, the format was giving way to sitcoms and dramas, but pop music stars Sonny and Cher, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and Donny and Marie Osmond hosted some of the last of the species. This book details 57 variety shows from the 1940s through the 1990s. A history of each show is first provided, followed by a brief look at each episode. Air date, guest stars, sketches performed, and a listing of songs featured are included.

Unlike her little brother, Harry, she must do whatever she’s told without question… or else. Her only solace from her fear and loneliness comes from writing about her plight. Though outwardly obedient, Audrey refuses to give up on her dreams, and she is determined to never become like her mother, Edith. Unhappily married to penniless Clarence Scott, Edith Scott blames everyone but herself for her lowly lot in life. Sick of being shunned and desperate to get revenge on the snobby “do-gooders,” she devises a scheme to gain wealth and power. Sacrificing her daughter is a small price to pay. When Edith discovers one of Audrey’s diaries, her reaction is extreme. Audrey begins a dangerous game of cat and mouse, unaware of how her mother’s grip on reality is slipping. As her mother slides into madness, the cost of Audrey’s independence may prove to be too high.
