The Atlas was an important contribution to the understanding of cardiac defects and helped provide the stimulus for rapid advances in the diagnostic, physiologic, and surgical aspects of congenital heart disease over the following decades. These advances have since progressed to such a degree that, given current radiologic imaging and surgical techniques, many of the anomalies illustrated in the Atlas are rarely seen as complete morphologic specimens. This reprinting of the Atlas underlines the importance of Abbott's contribution for the present generation. This reprint includes a short history of Abbott's life and how she came to create the Atlas, including a discussion of the material she used for her 1934 London Exhibit, which served as the basis for the Atlas. The original text and illustrations are enhanced by color prints of fifty-five specimens in the Abbott Collection of the McGill Pathology Museum. Re-publication of the Atlas in 2006 coincides with the 100th anniversary of the the International Academy of Pathology, which Abbott co-founded.

Some transcatheter therapies have become established as the standard of care for congenital cardiovascular anomalies previously managed surgically, others serve to supplement surgery in the integrated management of complex lesions, and still others are in their infancy, as pediatric interventional cardiology continues to advance in step with the broader field of pediatric cardiovascular medicine. Since the previous edition of this book, new technologies and techniques have been introduced to the field of pediatric interventional cardiology, much has been learned about established transcatheter therapies, and there has been a substantial increase in the volume of published data on outcomes of transcatheter procedures in congenital and pediatric heart disease. With increasing experience, the role of interventional catheterization has become solidified as an integral component of the comprehensive management of patients with essentially all forms of congenital heart disease. Cardiac catheterization has also become established as a distinct subspecialty within the discipline of pediatric cardiology, and at many centers has become the purview of cardiologists who have received specialized training in interventional catheterization and whose practice is focused on catheterization. Book excerpt: In a relatively short period of time two-dimensional echo cardiography has become the most important non-invasive diagnostic tool in the daily practice of a pediatric cardiologist who predominantly deals with congenital structural heart disease in neonates and infants. Consequently, one-dimensional M-mode echocardiography has lost most of its importance particularly in this field. Therefore, an atlas showing exclusively two-dimensional echocardiograms of the most common and some less frequently occurring malformations appeared to be a useful addition to the existing literature. The confinement to two dimensional imaging alone allowed an elaborate presentation of the various defects with more than 200 selected still frames and many additional explanatory drawings and diagrams. The material was collected from patients who were referred to the Department of Pediatric Cardiology of the Wilhelmina University Children's Hospital in Utrecht during a period of about 2 years. The two-dimensional echocardiographic findings were correlated with cardiac catheterization data and/or surgical procedures and/or post mortem investigations. The necessary echocardiographic equipment was aquired with financial aid from the Dutch Heart Foundation. We are indebted to Mrs. J. W. Wetselaar for her outstanding artwork. We also thank P. D.
