Book excerpt: Esta obra tiene como finalidad facilitar la comprensión de la disposición espacial y las relaciones de los distintos núcleos y vías, descritos habitualmente en las clases teórico-prácticas ya que uno de los grandes problemas de la neuroanatomía estriba en la dificultad de contar con imágenes espaciales representadas en planos y en el reconocimiento de la diferenciación de color por personas poco experimentadas en la materia. La base de este libro es ayudar a comprender la diferencia de color de las distintas sustancias a veces, francamente difíciles de percibir dado que cuando se habla de sustancia blanca y gris en los cortes de la Sala de Disección, ni lo blanco es blanco ni lo gris se observa como tal, siendo la razón, el método de fijación empleado. La creencia de que el sistema nervioso está constituido por dos tipos de sustancias: gris y blanca, es debida al método de fijación utilizado por los antiguos neuroanatómicos:alcohol o vino. Este procedimiento retrae y deforma intensamente las estructuras, por lo que en la actualidad se utiliza el formol tamponado a pH neutro en concentración al 10%. Con este procedimiento y apoyando el encéfalo sobre un lecho acolchado, se consigue que la deformidad sea mínima, obteniéndose cortes de gran calidad, con una buena diferenciación, apareciendo la sustancia gris, con un color rojizo, conservándose bastante bién el aspecto nacarino de la sustancia blanca. Apoyándose en los hechos reseñados, se ha realizado el presente atlas, resultando ser un elemento de gran utilidad, al presentar el encéfalo tal y como aparece en la Sala de Disección, con fotografías de los cortes en planos paralelos de 0,5 cm. de espesor, en las tres direccines del espacio; adjuntando además, la preparación utilizada en cada caso con el método Klinger y un esquema explicativo, a fin de facilitar el estudio del corte.

The Atlas is based on the Handbuch der Neurochirurgie, Vols. I and III (Springer 1956, 1959) but, whereas this is a comprehensive reference work, the present book is intended to give the practicing neurosurgeon, neuroradiolo gist, neuropathologist and neurologist the concise information they need for diagnostic purposes concerning the aspect, site, and ma lignancy of tumors and other space-occupying lesions in the brain. The schematic diagrams showing the sites of predilection of these tumors, as well as a piOgnosis based on the degree of malignancy, will be most useful here. The early chapters discuss the general rules governing displace ments due to space-occupying lesions and the manifestations of brain herniations. Other neurosurgical conditions, such as localized inflammatory processes, edema and obstructive hydrocephalus, are dealt with in brief chaptets; in this case I have chosen to show some of the rarer conditions rather than all the common lesions. In spite of probable future changes in terminology and classification, we have retained the classification used in the Atlas of Histology of Brain Tumors.
