Top Atlanta hair stylist, Solé, grew up fast, similarly to the way many others did in impoverished environments, but her down-to-earth personality and warm spirit always draws people in. However, no one knows how her traumatic past led her into constantly feeling defeated and no longer desiring love. Blaze is a flashy, ambitious hustler, and the noble leader of GMB, the ‘Get Money Boys’ crew. He’s well on his way to achieving his dreams of becoming a filthy rich businessman, his idea of the perfect life, and he won’t allow anyone to get in his way. Upon encountering Solé and her audacious ways, Blaze regards her as he does all of his prospective women, in the same rude, aggressive and blunt manner. With his mind on his money, he has no time or desire to bond with any woman and would rather use her for her body. But when Blaze’s feelings for Solé start to change, he tries to impress her in all the wrong ways. Unlike the other women he’s come across, Solé isn’t yearning for materialism; she is simply longing for a man to fulfill her in a rare form and connect with her soul. For Blaze, this is uncharted territory, forcing him to do things he thought he would never do. As a battle is waged between their minds and their hearts, their desire for each other pushes them to let each other in but their past stands in the way. Will Solé be able to drop her negative stance on men? And when she does, will Blaze be willing to let his guard down and be the man Solé needs him to be?

Book 78 Blues

  • Author : John Minton
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2009-10-08
  • ISBN : 1604733276
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book 78 Blues written by John Minton and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When record men first traveled from Chicago or invited musicians to studios in New York, these entrepreneurs had no conception how their technology would change the dynamics of what constituted a musical performance. 78 Blues: Folksongs and Phonographs in the American South covers a revolution in artist performance and audience perception through close examination of hundreds of key “hillbilly” and “race” records released between the 1920s and World War II. In the postwar period, regional strains recorded on pioneering 78 r.p.m. discs exploded into urban blues and R&B, honky-tonk and western swing, gospel, soul, and rock 'n' roll. These old-time records preserve the work of some of America's greatest musical geniuses such as Jimmie Rodgers, Robert Johnson, Charlie Poole, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. They are also crucial mile markers in the course of American popular music and the growth of the modern recording industry. When these records first circulated, the very notion of recorded music was still a novelty. All music had been created live and tied to particular, intimate occasions. How were listeners to understand an impersonal technology like the phonograph record as a musical event? How could they reconcile firsthand interactions and traditional customs with technological innovations and mass media? The records themselves, several hundred of which are explored fully in this book, offer answers in scores of spoken commentaries and skits, in song lyrics and monologues, or other more subtle means.

Book excerpt: This book is the first rigourous and detailed exploration of exactly how blues singers used formulas to create songs, and it more than amply fills the gap in the the study of the blues, where the structure and content of the lyrics have been less fully explored than the musical form. Focusing on the songs recorded by African-American singers for pre-World War Two commercial recording companies, this is an excellent structural analysis of the formulaic composistion of blues lyrics. This book gives a step-by-step description of the rules implicit in this formulaic structure and inspires new discussion of lyric structures. A wide array of readers will find this insightful and informative: from students of African-American music, cultural studies, history and linguistics, to Blues fans fascinated by exactly how the lyrics of this influential music style are written.

Book Pageants Parlors and Pretty Women

Download or read book Pageants Parlors and Pretty Women written by Blain Roberts and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the South's pageant queens to the importance of beauty parlors to African American communities, it is easy to see the ways beauty is enmeshed in southern culture. But as Blain Roberts shows in this incisive work, the pursuit of beauty in the South was linked to the tumultuous racial divides of the region, where the Jim Crow-era cosmetics industry came of age selling the idea of makeup that emphasized whiteness, and where, in the 1950s and 1960s, black-owned beauty shops served as crucial sites of resistance for civil rights activists. In these times of strained relations in the South, beauty became a signifier of power and affluence while it reinforced racial strife. Roberts examines a range of beauty products, practices, and rituals--cosmetics, hairdressing, clothing, and beauty contests--in settings that range from tobacco farms of the Great Depression to 1950s and 1960s college campuses. In so doing, she uncovers the role of female beauty in the economic and cultural modernization of the South. By showing how battles over beauty came to a head during the civil rights movement, Roberts sheds new light on the tactics southerners used to resist and achieve desegregation.
