Book Tales from the Chalkface

Download or read book Tales from the Chalkface written by Vernon Cutler and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2012 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales from the Chalkface is an enjoyable and anecdotal look at teaching that also provides a serious insight into teaching practices. This book is a small slice of teaching past written by Vernon Cutler, whose teaching career spanned 20 years. Vernon worked in primary schools from the late 1960s to the 1980s, and his book is an anecdotal look at teaching told from the inside. Tales from the Chalkface records the highs and lows of his time spent in education – from the highs of initial training and promotion, to the lows of workplace bullying and feeling overwhelmed when teaching his first class. Vernon’s writing rejoices in day-to-day encounters with the delightful, unsophisticated humour of children, as well as the humbling trust and unpredictable emotional and physical needs young children bring. He also finds himself wondering how a secondary trained teacher finds himself in charge of the reception class! Vernon learns first hand the truth of Shaw’s oft quoted assertion that ‘he who can does, he who cannot teaches,’ as he finds himself teaching swimming while unable to swim, and being in charge of the school football team, while not knowing the difference between off side and off the pitch!Throughout Tales from the Chalkface, Vernon enjoys the spontaneous humour of the children he teaches, and relishes in the trust parents and pupils alike place in him.

Book 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers Engaging Parents

Download or read book 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers Engaging Parents written by Janet Goodall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parental engagement with children's learning is the best lever we have to raise achievement in schools. However, there is a gap between what is known from the research and actual practice at the chalkface in schools. Parents are still often seen as 'helping' the school, rather than having a direct role in their children's learning. Bringing together one of the main researchers in the field and an educational consultant, this book utilises their experience to present 100 evidence-based ideas to help primary teachers engage parents in their children's learning. 100 Ideas for Primary Teachers: Engaging Parents presents ideas for supporting the most effective forms of parental engagement, which are grounded in both the literature in the field and practical experience of working with schools and families. This book offers a clear, concise and easy-to-use format that takes into account how busy schools and teachers truly are!

Book Teacher Education in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Teacher Education in Sub Saharan Africa written by Rosarii Griffin and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2012-05-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the drive to achieve universal primary education as one of the Millennium Development Goals, there is an increasing recognition of the urgency of focusing on teacher education to both meet the demand for more than one million qualified teachers required to achieve this goal within sub-Saharan Africa, as well as to combat the sometimes poor quality educational experience reported in the school. Currently, approximately only one third of teachers are qualified to teach. This dearth in qualified teachers also means that secondary and tertiary education need to be improved upon to provide an educated cohort of graduates. This in turn will ensure that the quality of teacher trained and retained within the profession is of a sufficiently high standard to ensure sustainable progress. This volume focuses on the various aspects of teacher education which need to be addressed in order for the wider Millennium Goals to be achieved, but more importantly, so that each African child living within sub-Saharan Africa will have the right to a quality education: ensuring they too experience their right and entitlement as children to reach their full potential - often taken for granted in Western countries – giving African children the necessary tools to build a better future for themselves. Of particular interest to the education researcher and policy maker, this volume’s contributors look at the various issues and challenges around the teacher profession, particularly in relation to resources and practices within sub-Saharan Africa. The contributors examine the issue of building research capacity for educational research within teacher education Colleges and explore the concept of education for sustainable development with the view to improving the development of quality teacher education within the global South. In this volume, research reports are presented highlighting the various challenges within the structure and provision of teacher education within certain national contexts, including assessment and curricula issues, which need to be addressed. This volume goes from the global to the local and examines teacher educator teaching, learning and reflective practice issues within different contexts, as well as exploring alternative pre-service experiences for western teachers who wish to work within the sub-Saharan context as well as some teacher educator exchange programmes between the South and North. Case countries explored include Lesotho, South Africa, Mozambique, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar, to mention but a few. Of particular value to the education researcher and policy maker, this book provides a timely resource focusing on an area of neglect, highlighting the central role of the teacher and teacher education towards sustainable development within the sub-Saharan African context.

Book Bog Standard

Download or read book Bog Standard written by Daniel Ken and published by Anova Books. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single father. No love life. And the teaching job from hell... Daniel Ken hated school, and school hated him. He left at 16 for a succession of dead-end jobs punctuated by bouts of unemployment where he’d inhabit the local library and read his way through every classic novel he could get his hands on. Motivated to reclaim his education he took short courses, a degree in English, then a Masters and then did what he swore he'd never do he returned to the classroom. To start with, things went well. But then his wife left him for his boss, and Daniel ended up bringing up his seven-year-old son, Joe, on his own, and swapping his cushy grammar school job for the teaching position no-one else would take the bottom class at the bottom 'bog standard' comprehensive in the area. But in a classroom full of ASBOs and ADD, Daniel found himself facing the sort of students he once was himself, and learning as much from them as they were from him. And in the library, where he once learnt to love books, he's about to fall in love all over again...

Book It s Your Time You re Wasting

Download or read book It s Your Time You re Wasting written by Frank Chalk and published by Ebury Australia. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Chalk is a teacher in a fairly poor inner city school - a school where the kids get drunk, take drugs and beat up the teachers... when they can be bothered to turn up. He confiscates their porn, booze and trainers, fends off angry parents and worries about the few conscientious pupils. Terrifying and hilarious, IT'S YOUR TIME YOU'RE WASTING is Chalk's real-life diary from the front line of the modern edukashun system. This book is a real word-of-mouth title. Think of comic genius Chris Lilley's "SUMMER HEIGHTS HIGH meets WASTING POLICE TIME by PC David Copperfield! Frank Chalk is a pseudonym for a disgruntled teacher in an inner city school in the UK - "a school where the kids get drunk, take drugs and beat up the teachers when they can be bothered to show up". Just like PC Copperfield in WASTING POLICE TIME, it's blackly and bleakly humorous. It's the diary of life on the front line but in this case, it's in the modern edukashun system. Fighting apathy, Frank has to battle the tearaways, their parents, and he worries about the few conscientious pupils. He muses on the shortcomings of the staff (including his own) while confiscating porn and booze and even spots the odd spark of hope amid all the despair. The appalling decline of education in the UK is very much mirrored here in Australia and this book is perfectly timed for the "Back to School Year". Frank Chalk was discovered via his popular blogsite: www.frankchalk.blogspot.com Frank taught for 16 years in state schools. He left the profession in late 2005 while still in his early 40s, having grown impossibly frustrated with working in the public sector education. He now runs his own business and is no longer involved in education (sensible bastard!). He's married to a teacher (poor bastard).
