Book excerpt: This book is an account of The Astor Place Riot, which occurred in 1849, at the now-demolished Astor Opera House in Manhattan and left between 22 and 31 rioters dead, and more than 120 people injured. Its ostensible genesis was a dispute between Edwin Forrest, one of the best-known American actors of that time, and William Charles Macready, a similarly notable English actor, which largely revolved around which of them was better than the other at acting the major roles of Shakespeare.

Wherein an Infuriated Mob Was Quelled by the Public Authorities and Military Forrest and Macready next met in Edinburgh. And from this city were sent forth the grossest calumnies against Forrest. Macready was (playing at the Theatre Royal in Hamlet - Forrest was present. During the beginning of the piece Mr. Forrest applauded several times, and, as we are informed by an eye witness, he started the applause when some brilliant effect had been given to a passage, so that the whole house followed him. But now comes Forrest's great sin - that giant sin which Mac will never forgive - the sin of hissing Macready for dancing and throwing up his handkerchief across the stage in the Pas de Mouchoir. Mr. F. Not only hissed, but the whole house hissed, and yet Macready dared to write to London, that Forrest had singly and alone attempted to hiss him from the stage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to New York City’s historical geography of social and political movements. Occupy Wall Street did not come from nowhere. It was part of a long history of uprising that has shaped New York City. From the earliest European colonization to the present, New Yorkers have been revolting. Hard hitting, revealing, and insightful, Revolting New York tells the story of New York’s evolution through revolution, a story of near-continuous popular (and sometimes not-so-popular) uprising. Richly illustrated with more than ninety historical and contemporary images, historical maps, and maps drawn especially for the book, Revolting New York provides the first comprehensive account of the historical geography of revolt in New York, from the earliest uprisings of the Munsee against the Dutch occupation of Manhattan in the seventeenth century to the Black Lives Matter movement and the unrest of the Trump era. Through this rich narrative, editors Neil Smith and Don Mitchell reveal a continuous, if varied and punctuated, history of rebellion in New York that is as vital as the more standard histories of formal politics, planning, economic growth, and restructuring that largely define our consciousness of New York’s story. Contributors: Marnie Brady, Kathleen Dunn, Zultán Gluck, Rachel Goffe, Harmony Goldberg, Amanda Huron, Malav Kanuga, Esteban Kelly, Manissa McCleave Maharawal, Don Mitchell, Justin Sean Myers, Brendan P. O’Malley, Raymond Pettit, Miguelina Rodriguez, Jenjoy Roybal, McNair Scott, Erin Siodmak, Neil Smith, Peter Waldman, and Nicole Watson. “The writing is first-rate, with ample illustrations and many contemporary and historical images. Fast paced and fascinating, like the city it profiles.”—Library Journal

Book The Night Shakespeare Literally Killed the Audience

Download or read book The Night Shakespeare Literally Killed the Audience written by John Toppin and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-23 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the night of May 7, 1849, William Charles Macready, noted British Shakespearian actor, was opening in Macbeth at the Astor Palace on Broadway in New York City, while his arch rival, beloved American actor, Edwin Forrest, was just down the street at the Bowery Theater, playing the role of Spartacus in "The Gladiator." This was a departure from what he'd done in Baltimore and Philadelphia, where he had played the same role as Macready in a theater just down the street. The Astor Place represented refinement and all the accoutrements of wealth and position, in other words, entertainment for the "highbrow" of New York City, while the Bowery Theater was just the opposite, an establishment for the workingmen or the "lowbrow" of the city. But the on-going feud between these two thespians and their supporters was more than just feeling one actor was superior to the other in stage presence and delivery, it was raw emotions still carried as a grudge over the War of 1812 and all that the British had done. Further, it was a built-up animosity between wealth and poverty, including a belief that English traditions were superior to American one's and vice versa. While some of these emotions spilled out on the night of the 7th, a postponement was in effect until the 10th, as in the intervening days Washington Irving and Herman Melville had to talk Macready into not departing the country and continuing his run on that fateful night. It was a night of terror and violence as all hell broke loose around the theater and up and down Broadway. And when it was over hundreds lay dead or wounded and there were far-reaching repercussions felt long after the Astor Place Riot. This is the story of the events leading up to, the night in question, and the aftermath of what had transpired.

Book Shakespeare in a Divided America

Download or read book Shakespeare in a Divided America written by James Shapiro and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the New York Times Ten Best Books of the Year • A National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist • A New York Times Notable Book A timely exploration of what Shakespeare’s plays reveal about our divided land. “In this sprightly and enthralling book . . . Shapiro amply demonstrates [that] for Americans the politics of Shakespeare are not confined to the public realm, but have enormous relevance in the sphere of private life.” —The Guardian (London) The plays of William Shakespeare are rare common ground in the United States. For well over two centuries, Americans of all stripes—presidents and activists, soldiers and writers, conservatives and liberals alike—have turned to Shakespeare’s works to explore the nation’s fault lines. In a narrative arching from Revolutionary times to the present day, leading scholar James Shapiro traces the unparalleled role of Shakespeare’s four-hundred-year-old tragedies and comedies in illuminating the many concerns on which American identity has turned. From Abraham Lincoln’s and his assassin, John Wilkes Booth’s, competing Shakespeare obsessions to the 2017 controversy over the staging of Julius Caesar in Central Park, in which a Trump-like leader is assassinated, Shakespeare in a Divided America reveals how no writer has been more embraced, more weaponized, or has shed more light on the hot-button issues in our history.
