Download or read book Pteridology in the New Millennium written by S. Chandra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Botanical Research Institute came into being as the 13th among a chain of National Laboratories established during April, 1953 under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research by the Govt. of India for advanced research in fields of specialisation which have a direct bearing on socio-economic, industrial and scientific advancement of the nation. Christened initially as National Botanic Gardens, the nucleus around which the institution took shape under its founder- Director Late Prof. K. N. Kaul, was a large herbarium of Indian flora and a centu- old botanical garden spread over 35 ha of land on the banks of River Gomti in the heart of Lucknow city. It’s a matter of great pleasure and profound satisfaction to me that a Golden Jubilee volume entitled, “Pteridology in the New Millennium” is being published and released during the Golden Jubilee year of NBRI in the honour of Professor B. K. Nayar who laid the foundation of the Pteridology Laboratory of the NBRI, which is now a well equipped laboratory for the study of Indian pteridophytes. Professor Nayar is a holistic Botanist as evident through his contributions and publications in almost all the areas of study of Pteridophyta. The contribution of Professor Nayar towards the development of modern Pteridology and the role of NBRI in it is indeed great and very important. His publications will be valuable for the younger generation of scientists in the field as well as for the more mature research workers and teachers.

Stipe not articulate to the rhizome; sorus dorsal on its vein; indusium fastened beneath the sorus on all sides, rupturing irregularly over it. (1) DIACALPE Blume. Rhizome erect; fronds large, tripinnate; veins free; sorus usually one to each segment, on the lowest acropetal veinlet; indusium spherical. Two terrestrial ferns, in this part of the world. (1) D. aspidioides Blume. Stipes clustered, erect, 40 cm. high, scaly at the base; frond 25 to 50 cm. high, triangular-ovate; pinnules oblong-cuneate, lobed and more or less decurrent, submembranaceous, glabrescent, or sparsely chaffy on the veins, disposed to blacken in drying. Mountains of Benguet and Lepanto, not below 2,000 m., Loher. India, southern China, and Malaya. 14 chapter{Section 4II. ASPIDIE.E. Fronds not articulate to the rhizome; sori terminal or dorsal on their veins, usually round, exceptionally extending along the veins or over the parenchyma; indnsia fixed by the center or at the top of a basal sinus, never elongate, frequently wanting. Because the presence or absence of the indusium varies within the larger genera, and even in some of their species, no classification and arrangement of the Aspidieai is everywhere easy to use. But, for this reason, any arrangement which tries to define its genera primarily by this character is eminently artificial and impractical. This is the largest group in our fern flora, and, except for the genera whose sporangia cover the dorsal surface, it is a very natural one, distinguished from the Polypodieas by the nonarticulate stipe and the usually present indusium, from Aspleniew by the round sorus and indusium, and from Davalltew by the latter's mode of attachment. 1. Frond pinnate or pinnately veined. 2. Sori definite, confined to th...

Download or read book Plant Diversity in India written by A.K. Bhatnagar and published by I K International Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has a vast landmass of 328 million hectares, extending from the tropics to the alpine regions, rich wetlands to deserts, islands, long coastline to Western and Eastern Ghats and the high Himalayas. It has equally rich and diverse plant diversity, with over 47,000 species that are already documented. Because of the large population dependence on these plants, expansion of agriculture, urbanization and development efforts, many species are threatened too. Some of the issues concerning plant diversity in India are unique to the country. Taxonomic and floristic studies on all major groups have been carried out but the information is scattered in research papers and regional/local floras, manuals and monographs. This volume intends to bridge this gap. Nine of the thirteen chapters of this volume deals with different plant groups extending from algae to angiosperms and allied groups such as bacteria, fungi, lichens, and myxomycetes. There are chapters dealing with topical issues in global context on biodiversity with special reference to India such as climate change and its impact on biodiversity, crop diversity, and tradomedicalism. Each chapter is written by author(s) specialising on the particular group and having long experience of research in it. Each chapter includes not only distribution and diversity but also major researches, economic uses and conventional human interactions. Lacunae in current knowledge are also pinpointed. The book provides information on ecosystem diversity, flora of special sensitive regions (mangroves, wetland, and coral reefs), and on policies and strategies being adopted for in situ and ex situ conservation.

Book Biology and Evolution of Ferns and Lycophytes

Download or read book Biology and Evolution of Ferns and Lycophytes written by Tom A. Ranker and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With their team of contemporary scholars, the editors present a thorough coverage of fundamental topics necessary for obtaining an up-to-date understanding of the biology of ferns and lycophytes. The book is organized into major topics that build from the individual and its biochemistry and structure, to genetics and populations, to interactions among individuals and the conservation of species, and concludes with perspectives on evolutionary history and classification. Each chapter is organized to review past work, explore current questions, and suggest productive directions for continued discoveries about these fascinating groups of organisms. Written for upper undergraduates, graduates and academic researchers, Biology and Evolution of Ferns and Lycophytes fills a major gap in biological, organism-level, evolutionary literature by providing a review of the biology and evolution of this important group of vascular land plants."--NHBS Environment Bookstore.
