Book excerpt: Desde hace vente años en la teoría de cine se registra un simultáneo aumento de interés, tanto por el ensayo Das Unheimliche (Freud, 1919), como por la tendencia a sustituir el método psicoanalítico por una disciplina más operativa, como es la psicología cognitiva. Esta tesis doctoral intenta descubrir los motivos de la aparición de estas tendencias que nos devuelven casi a los comienzos del cine. El citado ensayo de Freud y el primer libro sobre la teoría de cine The Photoplay: a psychological study (Münsterberg, 1916) se publicaron hace casi cien años, y sus respectivos autores son el fundador del psicoanálisis y un eminente psicólogo estadounidense de origen alemán. Nuestro título establece una relación entre la psicología del cine y el fenómeno de lo siniestro. Para simplificar lo dicho, este trabajo se dispone a averiguar si un director de cine puede incitar deliberadamente el sentimiento de lo siniestro en sus espectadores, empleando una serie de factores temáticos que especificó Freud en su ensayo Das Unheimliche. A esta hipótesis general hemos añadido un segundo objetivo que se planteaba en el mismo texto: comprobar si la ficción [cinematográfica] crea nuevas posibilidades de lo siniestro, que no pueden existir en la vida real. La palabra “cinematográfica” aparece entre corchetes porque Freud en el citado ensayo remitía solo a la literatura y a las historias clínicas de sus pacientes...

Meyer Friedman and Ray Rosenman de veloped the concept of the Type A coronary-prone behavior pattern and pioneered research in the area. Since then, much effort has been devoted to investigating both medical and psychosocial implications of this phenomenon by an impressive array of biomedical and behavioral scientists. On the basis of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) recent Congressional mandate concerning disease prevention and control, the Division of Heart and Vascular Diseases undertook an intensive review of the existing literature in this area. The review underscored that the very nature of the concept of coronary-prone behavior requires examination by researchers from a variety of disciplines. Publication of findings in both the medical and behavioral literature, however, has created difficulties in gaining a truly com prehensive understanding of the total effort in this area. It became obvious that there was no coherent integration of information regarding the strength of the association between behaviors and disease processes (or outcomes), how be havioral factors associated with coronary heart disease were measured, the possible physiological mechanisms mediating the relationship between be havior and disease, whether intervention could be effective, and what forms of intervention appeared most promising. In short, a clear need existed to or ganize this information in a more coherent fashion so that it could be subjected to critical review by members of both the medical and behavioral scientific communities.

However, whereas with a machine spare parts can usually replace faulty parts, in the case of humans the supply of these is limited as it is dependent on organs being obtained from living or dead donors. Due to the limitations of supply, increasing attention is being paid to alternative schemes for obtaining organs. One of these possibilities is xenotransplantation: using organs from animals. In this book, the authors examine the legal and ethical issues surrounding xenotransplantation and consider the implications for the future. As they point out, xenotransplantation represents a major deviation from standard medical practice and the possibility of transplantation of large segments of tissue, or whole organs, from animals into humans poses an entirely novel set of considerations - ethical, legal and scientific - which it is necessary to evaluate and understand.
