Book excerpt: Considering the great influence textbooks have as interpreters of history, politics and culture to future generations of citizens, it is no surprise that they generate considerable controversy. Focusing largely on textbook treatment of lingering - and sometimes explosive - tensions originating in World War II, "Censoring History" addresses issues of textbook nationalism in historical and comparative perspective. Discussions include Japan's Comfort Women and the Nanjing Massacre; Nazi genocide against the Jews, Gypsies, Catholics and others; Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Indochina wars. The essays address controversies over textbook content around the globe: How and why do specific representations of war evolve? What are the international and national forces affecting how textbook writers, publishers and state censors depict the past? How do these forces differ from country to country? Other comparative essays analyze nationalist and war controversies in German, US and Chinese textbook debates.

Book POOLS OF WATER PILLARS OF cl

Download or read book POOLS OF WATER PILLARS OF cl written by and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the Western world, Ibuse Masuji is known primarily as the author of Black Rain, a document of the atomic holocaust and perhaps modern Japanese literature's most important contribution to the world of letters. In Japan, where is career has spanned six decades of revolutionary historical and social change, his popular novels, stories, essays and poems have won that nations' highest literary awards. John Whittier Treat's illuminating study of Ibuse is "an inquiry into the life and writings of a man brave enough to attempt a story that, in the view of more than one Hiroshima survivor, was "beyond words." Treat's analysis is the first comprehensive critical work on Ibuse outside of Japan. He provides a key to Ibuse's extraordinary writings, making his Japanese subject accessible to a Western audience. Moving beyond conventional distinctions between Ibuse's earlier and later works, Treat synthesizes a framework in which to read and understand Ibuse as a whole. He begins with a question: why and how did this author come to write Japan's most acclaimed novel of the Hiroshima bombing? His answer is organized chronologically and thematically, incorporating elements of both biography and literary criticism. He translates extensively from Ibuse's works and from interviews with the author. Pervasive themes, motifs, and images are developed and interrelated throughout the short stories, essays and early novels of the 1920s and 1930s, wartime journals, and the historical fiction based on the accounts of castaways in Edo period Japan. Ibuse's quintessential humor and irony culminate in the powerful realism of Black Rain and his postwar writing. Ibuse's voice emerges clearly. His message is human; his subject is man as a survivor. Treat's book reveals an author whose complex themes "explore what binds man to his world--not, as is so often the case with modern fiction, what separates him." To this end, says Treat, Ibuse's work is about the work of literature, about coming to terms "with the power of words to prescribe as well as describe how we see ourselves complete in a fractured world."

Book Fighting Japan s Cold War

Download or read book Fighting Japan s Cold War written by Ryuji Hattori and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yasuhiro Nakasone, who served as prime minister for more than five years in the 1980s, was one of Japan’s leading postwar politicians. This book is a biography of him, but by interweaving international politics and media appraisals of him, it also serves as an examination of Japan’s postwar politics. Nakasone was an innovative conservative who actively criticized the conservative mainstream, and this book reveals from both domestic and foreign policy perspectives how the Liberal Democratic Party governed. The Nakasone government served not only as the final phase of the Cold War era of LDP factional politics but also as the starting point for the general mainstream faction system that followed. With the lengthy passage of time since the end of the Cold War and the collapse of Japan’s 1955 party system, there is a need to reassess Nakasone, showing that there was much more to him than the popular picture of him as a far-right hawk who loudly advocated for Japan to engage in autonomous self-defense and as an opportunist leader of a small faction, and to place the era in which Nakasone lived its proper historical context.
