Book excerpt: AS THE RAVEN FLIES by Colin Sidney-Wilmot tells an extraordinary tale of 5th century Britain that was to mould modern America and England, and the English speaking peoples. It was in this crucible of Saxons, Celts and Romans that the modern English, our laws and language were born. Through the story of Wecta, invented nephew of Saxon rulers Hengist and Horsa, we enter a world of warriors, battles and pillage amidst a collapsing Roman empire. Sidney-Wilmot is famed as a founder of Bussana Vecchia, about which a British documentary arts film is currently in production and many articles have been written, in papers as diverse as the New York Times, London Daily Mail, Express and the Independent. Since the restoration of his house in this historic village overlooking the mediterranean, Sidney-Wilmot has spent the last 5 years researching 5th century Britain. This recreation is based on that work.

Book excerpt: Corvus Heller and James Raven are freshly graduated seniors preparing to go to the same university. Although they don't know one another, each of their paths becomes of great significance to the other.Corvus Heller constantly weighs the cost of college tuition with how much the education will actually help him in the real world. While intelligent and capable of succeeding in the college environment, he is hesitant to put his family under financial strain. He is particularly wary to pay Middenburg University, where he likes the psychology program but knows some students treat school as a four-year (or more) vacation, the administration treats it as a profit-driven enterprise, and the focus of the university is more on sports than education.James Raven is an upper-echelon football recruit and driven young man from a rough urban area who has a full-ride scholarship to play football at Middenburg. Bringing the two together is Corvus' insufferable Uncle Pete, head coach of Middenburg's biggest rival, Indiana Central University. Also involved is Vic, a small-time bookie and student at Middenburg who becomes an intriguing influence on Corvus.Corvus and James' first semester involves high-level corruption in college sports, problems with gambling and substance abuse, the remnants of institutional racism at universities, and the tension of being a student and an athlete. While Corvus and Raven's struggles seem very different, they parallel each other in some ways. Both discover how crooked life's path can become when seeking love, friendship, and success on one's own terms.

No sooner does the Op arrive, than the body count begins to climb . . . starting with his client. Book Once Upon a Time There was a Little Girl

Download or read book Once Upon a Time There was a Little Girl written by Marcella Hannon Shields Ph. D. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once Upon a Time There Was a Little Girl shares the moving stories of seven women who as young girls experienced the early loss of their mothers through death or physical or emotional abandonment. The women explore their personal traumas through their responses to seven fairy tales in which there was no nurturing maternal presence. Dr. Marcella Shields is a psychologist with over thirty years of experience who reveals the inspiring journeys of these women who eventually triumph over suffering and learn to rely on the bond they have formed with each other to help reclaim their passion for life. By exploring seven timeless fairy tales in which the heroine finds her way through the grief of abandonment, the women offer a deeper understanding of the significance of the mother-daughter bond and the devastating consequences for the daughter if this bond is ruptured early. The poignant life stories and dreams courageously offered by these women show how fairy tales allowed them to understand and refashion themselves, and provide a source of encouragement and hope for other women who have experienced early maternal loss. Fathers raising daughters without a consistent maternal presence will also find the reflections valuable.

Book Beyond the End of the Road

Download or read book Beyond the End of the Road written by Michael D. Pitt and published by Agio Publishing House. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join Kathleen and Michael Pitt as they leave the comfort and temperate climate of suburban Vancouver to spend an isolated winter north of the Arctic Circle. With neither power nor running water, over 40 kilometres from the nearest community of 75 people, this middle-aged couple learns to embrace temperatures that regularly fall below minus 40 degrees. From their home base in a small, one-room cabin, they seek the challenge of winter camping and the adventure of expeditions across the ice. In January 1999, the Pitts flew by Twin Otter to Colville Lake to pursue Michael's life-long dream of living beyond the reach of roads and concrete. By the time the ice went out of the lakes and rivers in mid-June, their lives had been changed forever. Michael and Kathleen Pitt had been paddling the rivers of Northern Canada for ten years. Yet their experience seemed incomplete. Summer is for visitors. Michael needed to spend a winter in the North, where rivers, lakes and muskeg remain frozen for 7 to 8 months of the year. Only by following the winter trail did Michael believe that he could truly know the character and soul of Canada's vast, seemingly limitless Northern landscape. "A mesmerizing account of the North's beauty and the winter Michael and his wife Kathleen lived in a tiny cabin above the Arctic Circle. Well-written and insightful, this book will delight anyone who has explored the northern latitudes or dreams of doing so." -- Julie Angus, author of Rowboat in a Hurricane: My Amazing Journey Across a Changing Atlantic Ocean "Personal, humorous and witty, Pitt has crafted an Ode to Winter, sharing with us practical tips of wintercraft, philosophical musings and personal observations on life, the North and the majesty of Winter." -- Alan Fehr, 21-year resident of Arctic Canada and Superintendent of Prince Albert and Elk Island National Parks About the author, Michael D. Pitt Born and raised in California, Michael D. Pitt emigrated to Canada in 1975 to accept a position at the University of British Columbia as a professor of grassland ecology in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, where he eventually served as associate dean for eight years. In 1981 he married Kathleen, who worked at the university as an administrator in Information Technology Services. The lure of a rural lifestyle, however, with golden sun reflecting on winter snow, inevitably proved irresistible. Kathleen said goodbye to commute traffic, deadlines, memos and office walls in 2000. Michael escaped 18 months later. They now live on 565 acres in the Aspen Parkland near Preeceville, Saskatchewan, where sled dogs Brownie, Grey, Sailor and Slick help them operate Meadow's Edge Bed & Breakfast. Kathleen and Michael Pitt are authors of Three Seasons in the Wind: 950 km by Canoe Down Northern Canada's Thelon River, published in 1999.
