Book Ancient Arts of the Americas

Download or read book Ancient Arts of the Americas written by Geoffrey Hext Sutherland Bushnell and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon more than a decade spent living and exploring in Latin America, the author discusses the many phases of pre-Columbian art--including painting, sculpture, architecture, pottery, jewelry and textiles--within their historical framework. He focuses first on the civilizations of Mexico and Peru, where pre-Columbian art reached its height. In North America, the West Indies, and Central America, other cultures were creating their own art which, although often overshadowed by the spectacular legacies of Mexico and Peru, is marked by extraordinary manual skill and variety.

Download or read book Art History and Anthropology written by Peter Probst and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth and nuanced look at the complex relationship between two dynamic fields of study. While today we are experiencing a revival of world art and the so-called global turn of art history, encounters between art historians and anthropologists remain rare. Even after a century and a half of interactions between these epistemologies, a skeptical distance prevails with respect to the disciplinary other. This volume is a timely exploration of the roots of this complex dialogue, as it emerged worldwide in the colonial and early postcolonial periods, between 1870 and 1970. Exploring case studies from Australia, Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, and the United States, this volume addresses connections and rejections between art historians and anthropologists—often in the contested arena of “primitive art.” It examines the roles of a range of figures, including the art historian–anthropologist Aby Warburg, the modernist artist Tarsila do Amaral, the curator-impresario Leo Frobenius, and museum directors such as Alfred Barr and René d’Harnoncourt. Entering the current debates on decolonizing the past, this collection of essays prompts reflection on future relations between these two fields.

Book Guide to the Writings of Pioneer Latinamericanists of the United States

Download or read book Guide to the Writings of Pioneer Latinamericanists of the United States written by Martin Howard Sable and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ideal resource for researchers and scholars interested in Latin American studies, this unique and valuable guide identifies individuals born between the years 1700 and 1910 who are or were engaged in some activity concerned with Latin America in general or any of its nations or regions. While the majority of Latinamericanists cited here served as university professors, diplomats, and business people, the list of notable experts includes artists, attorneys, authors, bankers, clergy, explorers, economists, geologists, and journalists. For each entry, the author has listed each individual's full name, profession, employer, and two of his publications, thereby indicating his or her Latin American interests. The fascinating array of topics that these pioneers have addressed in their books include subjects that have been studies extensively, as well as those subjects that have barely been reviewed. A valuable feature of the book is the history of Latin American studies, written by pioneer Dr. A. P. Nasatir, Research Professor of History Emeritus at San Diego State University, who began teaching in the United States in 1928. Faculty, students, and researchers interested in Latin American studies will find this book valuable.
