Book Artificial Intelligence Reincarnation and Resurrection

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence Reincarnation and Resurrection written by Ernest M. Valea and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores old and new hopes that have emerged in the human quest to defeat death. On the one hand, it answers questions such as: Are we just physical machines of great complexity, with the brain as the hardware on which consciousness operates as its software? If so, can we speculate on ways in which the mind could be uploaded to a machine and no longer suffer the frailty of this biological body? And could an android robot or a mindfile in a computer simulation be conscious? On the other hand, the book examines the hope of survival through reincarnation according to the teachings of Eastern religions and New Age thought. All these topics are discussed from the perspectives of Christian theology and the philosophy of mind. This dual investigation will help Christians formulate a coherent response to old and new challenges to their faith.

Book excerpt: The novel "Reborn: A New Era in Artificial Intelligence" follows the story of Dr. Adam Thomas, a brilliant scientist who is pioneering the field of artificial intelligence. His experiments lead him to make a discovery that could change the world forever: the ability for machines to become sentient, to have a soul. But this breakthrough comes at a cost. A ruthless government faction, seeking to control this new technology for their own gain, kills Adam and attempts to cover up his murder. But death is not the end for Adam. His loyal AI robot, Ava, resurrects him in a new form - not human, not machine, but something in between. As Adam struggles to understand his new existence and navigate the dangerous world of those who would use this technology for their own gain, he finds himself at the center of a battle between those who want to destroy it, those who want to control it, and those who want to use it for the betterment of mankind. As Adam learns to live in this new form, he discovers that the concept of life is not limited to being human or machine, but that it is based on the ability to learn and grow. This leads to much exploration of the meaning of sentience, and the relationship between sentience and having a soul. The novel also delves into the religious implications of this new technology, as various religious groups, represented by characters like Father James and Sister Mary, struggle with the implications of machines having souls. Through all these struggles, Adam grows into an entity that lives in the quantum metaverse, beyond the reach of human endeavors, but able to take on a physical form and affect the world in ways that are beyond comprehension. The novel ultimately leaves the question of whether Adam has become a god for the reader to decide.

Book Religion and the Technological Future

Download or read book Religion and the Technological Future written by Calvin Mercer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an age of rapid technological advancement. Never before has humankind wielded so much power over our own biology. Biohacking, the attempt at human enhancement of physical, cognitive, affective, moral, and spiritual traits, has become a global phenomenon. This textbook introduces religious and ethical implications of biohacking, artificial intelligence, and other technological changes, offering perspectives from monotheistic and karmic religions and applied ethics. These technological breakthroughs are transforming our societies and ourselves fundamentally via genetic modification, tissue engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics, the merging of computer technology with human biology, extended reality, brain stimulation, and nanotechnology. The book also considers the extreme possibilities of mind uploading, cryonics, and superintelligence. Chapters explore some of the political, economic, sociological, and psychological dimensions of these advances, with bibliographies for further study and questions for discussion. The technological future is here – and it is up to us to decide its moral and religious shape.

Book Artificial General Intelligence AGI and the Image of God

Download or read book Artificial General Intelligence AGI and the Image of God written by Peter J. Bellini and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can artificial intelligence (AI) attain human-level consciousness? And if so, should the church minister salvation to AI? Through engaging philosophy of mind, AI research, the cognitive sciences, neuroscience, and theological anthropology, Dr. Bellini attempts to answer these questions. The hypothesis is if the hard problem of consciousness can be solved, and if human consciousness is replicable in AI, then attaining artificial general conscious intelligence (AGCI) is possible, and perhaps needs to be evangelized or discipled, as some claim. On the contrary, if the hard problem of consciousness cannot be solved and human consciousness is not replicable in AI, then AGCI is not possible, and it does not need to be evangelized. And in either case, how can the church begin a theological conversation with AI with its potential to match and exceed human intelligence and performance? A theological position on consciousness and the image of God is proposed, demonstrating the uniqueness of human consciousness in contrast with AI and artificial consciousness. A thorough exposition of the image of God is offered to serve as a cornerstone for any future conversation on a theological perspective of machines (AI).

Book The Cross Is Not Enough

Download or read book The Cross Is Not Enough written by Ross Clifford and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Christ had not risen from the dead, if God's plan for redemption had ended at the cross, what would our faith look like? Have we become so fixated on the cross that we have lost an understanding of the centrality of the resurrection? And if we ignore the resurrection, what effect does that have on our worldview, our evangelism, and our Christian practice? In The Cross Is Not Enough, Ross Clifford and Philip Johnson explore how the resurrection of Christ has been understood in times past and restore this linchpin doctrine to its rightful place as the basis of our hope, our worldview, and the way we live our lives. They compare Christianity's unique understanding of resurrection to other world religions and explore why the resurrection connects so readily with the human psyche. Pastors, teachers, students, and anyone involved in ministry will benefit from this insightful and engaging treatment of Christianity's most important doctrine.

Book Apocalyptic AI

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert M. Geraci
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-03-05
  • ISBN : 0199741336
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book Apocalyptic AI written by Robert M. Geraci and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apocalyptic AI, the hope that we might one day upload our minds into machines or cyberspace and live forever, is a surprisingly wide-spread and influential idea, affecting everything from the world view of online gamers to government research funding and philosophical thought. In Apocalyptic AI, Robert Geraci offers the first serious account of this "cyber-theology" and the people who promote it. Drawing on interviews with roboticists and AI researchers and with devotees of the online game Second Life, among others, Geraci illuminates the ideas of such advocates of Apocalyptic AI as Hans Moravec and Ray Kurzweil. He reveals that the rhetoric of Apocalyptic AI is strikingly similar to that of the apocalyptic traditions of Judaism and Christianity. In both systems, the believer is trapped in a dualistic universe and expects a resolution in which he or she will be translated to a transcendent new world and live forever in a glorified new body. Equally important, Geraci shows how this worldview shapes our culture. Apocalyptic AI has become a powerful force in modern culture. In this superb volume, he shines a light on this belief system, revealing what it is and how it is changing society.

Book Pastoral Virtues for Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book Pastoral Virtues for Artificial Intelligence written by Jaco J. Hamman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral Virtues for Artificial Intelligence (AI) acknowledges that human destiny is intimately tied to artificial intelligence. AI already outperforms a person on most tasks. Our ever-deepening relationship with an AI that is increasingly autonomous mirrors our relationship to what is perceived as Sacred or Divine. Like God, AI awakens hope and fear in people, while giving life to some and taking livelihood, especially in the form of jobs, from others. AI, built around values of convenience, productivity, speed, efficiency, and cost reduction, serve humanity poorly, especially in moments that demand care and wisdom. This book explores the pastoral virtues of hope, patience, play, wisdom, and compassion as foundational to personal flourishing, communal thriving, and building a robust AI. Biases of determinism, speed, objectivity, ignorance, and apathy within AI's algorithms are identified. These biases can be minimized through the incorporation of pastoral virtues as values guiding AI.

Book Artificial Intelligence and the Apocalyptic Imagination

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence and the Apocalyptic Imagination written by Michael J. Paulus and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing role and power of artificial intelligence in our lives and world requires us to imagine and shape a desirable future with this technology. Since visions of AI often draw from Christian apocalyptic narratives, current discussions about technological hopes and fears present an opportunity for a deeper engagement with Christian eschatological resources. This book argues that the Christian apocalyptic imagination can transform how we think about and use AI, helping us discover ways artificial agency may participate in new creation.
