Book The Domus Aurea Book Ediz Inglese

Download or read book The Domus Aurea Book Ediz Inglese written by Vincenzo Farinella and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The palace of Nero is a visionary monument, decorated with monsters, fantastic animals and mythical scenes taken from the Homeric poems to create a colourful and seductive imagery. The part of this sumptuous ostentation of power that survived the damnatio memoriae of the emperor after his death is the pavilion on the Oppian Hill, over which the foundations of the new Baths of Trajan were built.0The volume opens with a portrait of Nero, a prince-artist whose complexity can only be guessed between the lines of a violently hostile biographical tradition. There follow, in order, the vicissitudes of the building, between rediscoveries (in the 15th century) and new condemnations (after the Council of Trent), an investigation into the ?grotesque? style from Raphael to the present day and a final chapter on the links with the imagery of contemporary art. The images that accompany the texts, as in all the volumes in this series, range from 19th-century paintings to maps and archaeological finds and, together with quotations, give the reader an unconventional and yet scholarly overview of the history of this magnificent monument.

Book excerpt: When in therapy, women inevitably present both sexual and spiritual issues of importance. However, there has yet to be brought forth an integrating approach to women’s sexuality and spirituality. The book fills this gap, integrating these two diverse yet connected aspects of therapy. This innovative exploration of women’s experiences of their sexuality and spirituality is presented from a feminist psychological perspective, clearly illustrating the dichotomy that exists in Western culture and offering a unique approach for convergence. This book provides therapists with positive and self-affirming viewpoints and practical strategies to help harmonize sexual and spiritual issues in women clients. The book uses a synergistic perspective to facilitate healing for women’s psycho/sexual/spiritual growth and development. Therapists are provided with invaluable tools for personal understanding and clinical practice when considering sexuality and spirituality and how they interact in a client’s life. This book is crucial reading for psychotherapists, counselors, social workers, educators, pastoral counselors, and anyone interested in learning more about the intersections between sexuality and spirituality. This book was published as a special issue of Women & Therapy: A Feminist Quarterly.

  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Natural Curiosity written by Louise Anemaat and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parrots and lorikeets swoop down, vivid, bright and colourful. Black swans glide through the air. Owls stare out from pages, wide-eyed. A sense of awe swept through natural history circles in eighteenth-century London when the first ships returned from Sydney with their cargo of exotic animals, birds and plants – and striking watercolour illustrations. The sudden emergence, in 2011, of a large number of these watercolour illustrations has revealed much about the early years of the colony. In Natural Curiosity, Louise Anemaat uncovers never-before-published works from the artists of the First Fleet, including convicts-turned-watercolourists Thomas Watling and John Doody, and the anonymous 'Port Jackson Painter'. She unravels the complex network of natural history collectors who spanned the globe – eagerly acquiring, copying and exchanging these artworks – from New South Wales Surgeon-General John White to passionate British collector Aylmer Bourke Lambert.

Book The Things of Greater Importance

Download or read book The Things of Greater Importance written by Conrad Rudolph and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Things of Greater Importance" provides a close look into the social and cultural context of medieval art, primarily as expressed in Bernard of Clairvaux's Apologia, the central document in the greatest artistic controversy to occur in the West prior to the Reformation and the most important source we have for understanding medieval attitudes toward art. Bernard wrote the Apologia during the medieval efflorescence of monumental sculpture and stained glass, of advanced architecture, of pilgrimage art, of high Romanesque, and of the origins of Gothic art. Rudolph places the Apologia, traditionally seen as a condemnation either of all religious art or of all monastic art, in a broader context, using it to explore the role of art in medieval society. He shows that Bernard was interested in the impact of art on contemporary monasticism in a more complex way than previously believed. The book offers the most thorough study available of the theoretical basis of medieval art as it functioned in society; and its implications for the art of both the Romanesque and Gothic periods, which were spanned by Bernard's life, are significant.
