Download or read book Armoured Fist written by Charlotte Anker and published by Time-Life Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tanks do not fight alone: ordinarily, they are accompanied by lightlty armoured fighting vehicles, infantry carriers, helicopter gunships, engineers, mobile artillery, and other complimentary forces. Nor do they thrive everywhere. M48 Patton tanks and M113 armoured cavalry assault vehicles could be formidable in sweep operations in Vietnam but their scope was limited. Mush of the country's jungled terrain deterred armour. In the bloody territorial struggle fought by Iraq and Iran from 1980 to 1988, armour was sometimes thwarted by a marshy battle zone. Nonetheless, the tank and its deadly retinue have remained at the centre of modern land warfare, demonstrating their primacy in arenas ranging from the deserts of the Middle East to the urban battlefields of Bucharest and Beijing.

Download or read book The Armored Fist The 712th Tank Battalion in the Second World War written by Aaron Elson and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 712th Tank Battalion landed in Normandy three weeks after D-Day and spent eleven months in combat. Along the way, its men dug up potatoes with their tanks and roasted them on the exhausts; liberated Calvados; drank wine and champagne; collected Lugers, banners and other trophies of war; and fought and died together in some of the most dramatic battles of the Second World War. The men of the 712th were ordinary people living through an extraordinary time. This is a story not so much about the tanks themselves as it is about the people who were in them such as Billy Wolfe who wrote in a high school essay that 'I may get specialised training from Uncle Sam that might be my life's work.' It was his life's work. One of his sisters said 'Two weeks after joining the battalion as a replacement, 18-year-old Billy burned to death inside a tank.' Others include Ed Forrest, whose grave in the American cemetery at Margraten was adopted by a middle school whose students place flowers on it and say a prayer during field trips, and Jim Flowers who survived the horrors on Hill 122.

Book excerpt: Unless you write yourself, you cant know how wonderful it is; I always used to bemoan the fact that I couldnt draw, but now Im overjoyed that at least I can write. And if I dont have the talent to write books or newspaper articles, I can always write for myself.ANN FRANK, A Diary of a Young Girl. And that was what I did, sitting at the kitchen table, pencil in hand, Oxford Dictionary of Current English and a pencil sharpener beside me. It was daunting at the beginning, putting pencil to paper, and I could not remember the number of times I stared blankly at the refrigerator facing me in the kitchen, scouring my mind to recollect memories of past events. Somehow, the encouraging words from the books I had read to prepare me for this journey seemed to lubricate the long stagnant gears of my mind and I just do itthe way I wanted it to be done.

Download or read book The Breakthrough of Kampfgruppe Peiper in the Battle of the Bulge written by Hugues Wenkin and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-06-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kampfgruppe Peiper was the spearhead of the German 6th Panzer-Army in the Ardennes, responsible for clearing the way for the German tanks towards the Meuse and Antwerp. It was endowed with considerable firepower and brought together the most motivated veterans of the Third Reich. It had to rush forward without regard to its flanks, seizing the bridges over the Meuse before the American army had time to react. After a difficult start, the German armored column broke through the defensive curtain of Gis and set off on its mission. It had to cross the Ardennes, an easy-to-defend area that the American command used to gain time. One after the other, bridges were being blown in front of Peiper. His fuel ran out, and he found himself at a standstill isolated on a promontory at La Gleize. Using combat reports from both sides, this book analyzes the events as they occurred, minute by minute, explaining the reasons for Peiper's failure, even though, on paper at least, he had everything he needed to win.
Download or read book European Dictatorships written by Gerhard Besier and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How could it happen that continental Europe became a “Europe of the Dictatorships“ in the twentieth century? It requires some effort to understand such processes. It is insufficient to observe merely the dictatorships and their mechanisms, one must also incorporate the seemingly harmless history leading up to that time and, above all, the transitions that took place. The book begins with a description of the historical situation after the First World War. Europe’s brutalization through colonial wars and inter-European conflicts, carried out using means of mass extermination, led to fractures in civilized cultures. What follows in the second section is another state-by-state organized design of the transition from countries that were fascist (and countries that were made fascist) into communist states established in accordance with the Soviet model. The third part of the book is devoted to the history of the “Eastern Bloc” states from 1953 to 2013.
Download or read book Lineages of the Absolutist State written by Perry Anderson and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty years after its original publication, Lineages of the Absolutist State remains an exemplary achievement in comparative history. Picking up from where its companion volume, Passages from Antiquity to Feudalism, left off, Lineages traces the development of Absolutist states in the early modern period from their roots in European feudalism, and assesses their various trajectories. Why didn’t Italy develop into an Absolutist state in the same, indigenous way as the other dominant Western countries, namely Spain, France and England? On the other hand, how did Eastern European countries develop into Absolutist states similar to those of the West, when their social conditions diverged so drastically? Reflecting on examples in Islamic and East Asian history, as well as the Ottoman Empire, Anderson concludes by elucidating the particular role of European development within universal history.
