Book Arkansas Mischief

Download or read book Arkansas Mischief written by Jim McDougal and published by Holt Paperbacks. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until his recent death in federal prison, Jim McDougal was the irrepressible ghost of the Clintons' Arkansas past. As Bill Clinton's political and business mentor, McDougal - with his knowledge of embarrassing real estate and banking deals, bribes, and obstructions of justice - has long haunted the White House. Jim McDougal's vivid self-portrait, completed only days before his death and coauthored by veteran journalist Curtis Wilkie, takes on the rich particularity of character and plot to reveal the hidden intersections of politics and special interests in Arkansas and the betrayals that followed. It is the story of how ambitious men and women climbed out of rural obscurity and "how friendships break down and lives are ruined."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men of No Reputation is the first account to explore the life of Robert Boatright, one of Middle America’s most gifted, but forgotten, confidence men. Boatright’s story provides a rare window into the secret world of Missouri’s criminal past, which influenced the methods of confidence men across the country. Boatright took the preexisting big-store confidence scheme and perfected it. With the assistance of a talented coterie of confederates known as the Buckfoot Gang, this “dean of modern confidence men” fleeced the gentry of the Midwest on fixed athletic contests in the turn-of-the-century Ozarks. Working in concert with a local bank and an influential Democratic boss, Boatright seemed untouchable. A series of missteps, however, led to a string of court cases across the country that brought his criminal enterprise to an end. And yet, the con continued. Boatright’s successor, John C. Mabray, and his cronies, many of whom had been in the Buckfoot Gang, preyed upon victims across North America in one of the largest Midwestern criminal syndicates in history before they were brought to heel. Like the works of Sinclair Lewis, Boatright’s story exposes a rift in the wholesome Midwestern stereotype and furthers our understanding of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American society.

Book FROM LIFE IN THE HAMPTONS TO A LIFE OF POVERTY IN ARKANSAS

Download or read book FROM LIFE IN THE HAMPTONS TO A LIFE OF POVERTY IN ARKANSAS written by William D. Hedges and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of 148 significant events in the author’s life.. Perhaps the best way to explain this is to include one event here. It is termed: Sex Education Soon, however, we moved again. When I was about thirteen, we lived on a small farm in south central Arkansas. The farm consisted of about 80 acres of land, 40 of which were in woodland and the other 40 in worn out rocky soil on which cotton had been raised for a number of years One day, my dad asked me to go to a neighbor’s house and get a dozen to fifteen eggs to put under a setting hen. I complied, brought the eggs home and per his instructions put them carefully under the hen that was sitting in a box with straw in it. She did not like it as she pecked at me whenever I tried to put an egg under her. I guess she thought I was trying to steal her eggs. I finally succeeded although she could peck hard and it hurt. About three weeks later, those eggs began to explode. Boom! Then another boom. They were all rotten. Something was wrong. Since it was one of my chores to take care of the chickens, I went to my father and told him those eggs I bought were no good. None of them had hatched! He paused a moment and then said. “Did you ask Mr. Keisler if he had a rooster before you bought those eggs?” Puzzled, I replied, “No, why should I? You said you wanted some eggs, not a rooster.” “Son,” he said, “Come sit down. I think it is time you and I had a little talk.”

Book Secrets Worth Dying for

Download or read book Secrets Worth Dying for written by David Paul Hammer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the four cousins climb into a rubber boat and paddle UPSTREAM from their Grandmother's pond they have no idea of the adventure that lies ahead. Once they pass under the small bridge the river carries them into a world of mystery and magic. The beauty gives way to fear and danger as they come upon three evil nixies that lock them in a huge pumpkin and transport them far from home. As the four kids try to get back to their grandmother's pond, they find themselves chased by wild animals, sucked into a swamp, and trapped underground. The further upstream the kids go the more dangerous the enchanted river becomes until the children are fighting for their very lives. They often lose their way but are drawn back again and again to the water in and around which both good and bad folk live. More evil magic beings torment them and if not for the help of four uncommon friends and the courage of the children themselves they might never find their way home again.
