Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if non-traditional students, in particular those students that started and completed their degree online, differ from the traditional face-to-face student in their interest to engage with their alma mater once they have graduated. In particular, the focus of the study identifies variables that online students consider to be key motivators for enticing them to become engaged alumni. A survey was sent to 972 full-time Wilmington University students to identify their level of overall satisfaction with their educational experience in addition to identifying areas of interest for future alumni engagement opportunities. Three open answer questions were included to offer students a chance to share their reasons for wanting to become involved alumni and the barriers that would prevent them from doing so. Within the survey population there were 132 face-to-face and 54 online students that responded. Results from the 186 respondents refutes the assumption that online students are less interested in wanting to be involved as students and ultimately alumni. The survey responses and qualitative responses revealed that online students would be equally, and in some cases, even more inclined to be engaged with their alma mater following graduation. Recommendations were made that included creating an alumni presence with online students early in their educational experience, creating an online alumni organization, sending university logoed materials to online students to create a better sense of identity, and organizing an online alumni mentoring program.

The use of social media to engage alumni is a key communication channel. The themes this researcher identified are supported by uses and gratifications theory as well as social capital theory as it relates to the online connection of alumni to the university. The researcher found recent graduates read and engage with posts with (a) strong visuals, (b) nostalgia, (c) an inside look into the organization, and (d) a relaxed or humorous tone. Mid-career alumni are also seeking (a) strong visuals and (b) nostalgia, as well as (c) information for professional growth. All participants agreed that they do not comment on posts they see on university social media accounts primarily because they do not want to get into the fray of what can spiral into negativity online. In seeking to understand what content or engagement motivates alumni to volunteer for, donate to, refer future students to attend, or advocate on behalf of the university, this researcher found recent graduates (a) are motivated by fun incentives, (b) respond best when there is a personal connection, and (c) do not relate to the big donor stories they see. Mid-career alumni (a) attend events that enhance their professional work, (b) refer future students based on advancements and success stories, and (c) make donations based on seeing innovation that is currently taking place.

It recounts how a few individuals began to adapt professional fundraising to an academic environment, describes the impact of transatlantic ideas of ‘best practice’ and their adaptation to local circumstances through the work of a few individuals from the UK and North America, and how the academic leadership, government policy and influential volunteers came together to expand philanthropy as an important source of revenue in colleges and universities throughout the UK. It documents the expansion of student numbers in the USA and UK and the differing financial models supporting the higher education sector. When New Labour found the existing funding model of higher education to be unsustainable, one response was to seek new ways to kick-start university fundraising, and to encourage philanthropy. University leaders were quick to respond and to follow the early pioneers such as the universities of Edinburgh and later Oxford and Cambridge. The result was a significant increase in non-governmental sources of income and a new profession of university fundraisers. William Squire was the first development director at the University of Cambridge and the book incorporates many of his personal experiences in the changing world of university fundraising. Whilst University Fundraising in Britain is a work of social history that primarily focuses on university fundraising, many parts of the book apply wherever there is a need to attract funds for all kinds of charitable and cultural activities.
