I have often been asked to recommend such a book, and having to reply that there was, as far as I knew, no such work in the English language, I have here endeavoured to supply the deficiency. Some apology may seem to be required for the comparatively brief space devoted to the historical sketch, while the larger portion of the book is occupied with theoretical considerations, partially illustrated, however, from historical fact.
