Download or read book Corporatism since the Great Recession written by Mikkel Mailand and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the comparative study of Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria, Mikkel Mailand explores the roles of social partners in regulating work and welfare through corporatist arrangements. It will be an invaluable read for academics and students in industrial relations, political economy and other social science disciplines addressing the formulation of work and welfare related policies.

Book Interactional Categorization and Gatekeeping

Download or read book Interactional Categorization and Gatekeeping written by Louise Tranekjær and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2015-05-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about categorization processes in native/non-native workplace interaction, within the context of internship interviews between Danish employers and second language speakers who were born abroad. In this volume, which is one of the first books on gatekeeping, Tranekjær seeks to address processes of power and ideology from a conversation analytical perspective. The book examines the challenges that non-native internship candidates face in processes of employment when employers and job-counsellors seek to conceptualize, categorize and address the candidates’ linguistic, ethnic and religious otherness. The book shows how processes of categorization are influenced by broader structures of ideology related to social issues of controversy and debate such as migration, integration and second-language learning. The book also includes an overview of previous gatekeeping studies and proposes a redefinition of the term, which suggests a broader meaning and relevance of the notion.

Book The Nordic Welfare State in Three Eras

Download or read book The Nordic Welfare State in Three Eras written by Johannes Kananen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nordic welfare states are known for a unique combination of equity and efficiency and for political institutions facilitating compromise and consensus between conflicting interests. The Nordic Welfare State in Three Eras: From Emancipation to Discipline analyses the historical and contemporary evolution of Nordic welfare states in Denmark, Sweden and Finland during three periods: the developmental period until the end of WWII, the period of emancipatory welfare institutions until the 1980s, and the period of restructuring from the 1980s until present times. The three eras discussed are shared in one way or another by all welfare states. However, Nordic welfare institutions are unique in the sense that they were particularly compatible with the ideas of Keynesian macro-economic management that constituted the blueprint of international economic ideas during the post-war period. This ground-breaking book will show how preceding emancipating elements of Nordic welfare states were largely lost in the process of renegotiating the post-war social order, and replaced by new elements of discipline and control.

Book Globalisation New and Emerging Technologies and Sustainable Development

Download or read book Globalisation New and Emerging Technologies and Sustainable Development written by Jesper Lindgaard Christensen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the capacity of the Danish innovation system to respond to key societal challenges including the green imperative of achieving growth with environmental sustainability and the need to adapt to new and possibly disruptive changes in technology, often referred to as the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The book is divided into four main parts. The first describes the evolving characteristics of the Danish system of research and innovation with special attention to the role of policy at the national and regional levels. The second part focuses on interorganisational relations, including the position of Danish firms in national and global value chains. The third part examines changes in labour markets and in the educational and training system, and it considers the impact of new technologies including robotics and artificial intelligence on employment and skills. The fourth part turns to issues of climate change and environmental sustainability including an assessment of the Danish economy’s success in meeting the challenges of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The book will be of particular interest to small countries, of which the Danish innovation system is representative, but it also appeals more broadly to an audience interested in innovation systems and policies to support economic development.

Book The Moral Economy of Activation

Download or read book The Moral Economy of Activation written by Hansen, Magnus and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Activation policies which promote and enforce labour market participation continue to proliferate in Europe and constitute the reform blueprint from centre-left to centre-right, as well as for most international organizations. Through an in-depth study of four major reforms in Denmark and France, this book maps how co-existing ideas are mobilised to justify, criticise and reach activation compromises and how their morality sediments into the instruments governing the unemployed. By rethinking the role of ideas and morality in policy changes, this book illustrates how the moral economy of activation leads to a permanent behaviourist testing of the unemployed in public debate as well as in local jobcentres.

Book Greenland s Economy and Labour Markets

Download or read book Greenland s Economy and Labour Markets written by Laust Høgedahl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores structural changes in Greenland’s economy and labour markets due to the transformative effects of climatic changes and growing international attention. It offers multidisciplinary perspectives from economists, sociologists, and political scientists to demonstrate how the Greenlandic economy works. Due to an increasing focus on the Arctic area and Greenland in particular, the book seeks to understand the functioning and dynamics of Greenland’s labour economy, as well as the challenges that arise from the melting ice and internationalisation. It fills a substantive gap in the existing literature by compiling research on these critical subjects and exploring current and future opportunities for labourers. Today, Greenland is reliant on large financial subsidies from Denmark to provide for a large share of its national budget. This fuels Greenland’s political ambition to gain greater independence from Denmark, which requires more private sector growth to develop a sustainable economy. This book thus contains an exhaustive introduction to important business development themes such as macroeconomics, markets, labour supply, labour market policies, and institutions and considers Greenland’s colonial past, great Inuit heritage, and unique geography and nature to re-shape its economy and labour markets. Informed by a lucid writing style, each chapter casts light on different economic and social issues of Greenland. This is the first international book on Greenland’s economy which discusses its geopolitical importance and prospects for the Arctic region. It will be a valuable point of reference for students and academics of economics, Arctic research and political economy.

Book Listening to the Welfare State

Download or read book Listening to the Welfare State written by Michael Seltzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening to the Welfare State presents, for the first time in English, central research findings from recent studies of the welfare systems of Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden. The book’s contributors are leading investigators of face-to-face encounters between welfare professionals and clients in these systems. All have collected their data through ethnographic observations as well as taped recordings of these meetings. By subjecting their data to conversation and discourse analyses, these researchers provide a richly detailed empirical picture of the various forms of talk-at-work constituting the core activity of a variety of street-level bureaucracies. Their findings provide a well-rounded body of knowledge about what happens when professionals meet persons seeking financial assistance, child protection, employment, vocational counselling, treatment, rehabilitation and related services. Essential reading for both professional and students, this book will provide a wealth of insights into and understandings of, the micro-level workings of welfare state systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic welfare states are facing new challenges in an increasingly globalised world. Fiercer competition has underlined the need for the Nordics to enhance competitiveness - and to support and nurse growth in industry and businesses. This report presents the key findings and policy recommendations of the project "Nordic Growth Sectors." Having identified growth companies in the Nordics, the project analyses growth drivers, the match between supply and demand of labour, the work environment in the companies, and growth and other companies' perceptions of existing framework conditions and improvement needs. Based on the analyses and on a Nordic Policy Forum held in Copenhagen with participation of policymakers from the central administrations, labour market organisations, universities and growth companies, a set of policy recommendations are developed, the most important of which are to Introduce: (i) More flexible retirement schemes; (ii) Diminish international recruitment red tape; (iii) Prepare graduates better for employment; (iv) Create national work environment "barometers"; (v) Introduce more flexible child care facilities; (vi) Carry out cost-benefit analysis of complex regulation

Book Consensus Cooperation and Conflict

Download or read book Consensus Cooperation and Conflict written by Henning Jørgensen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that policy formation in Denmark is characterized by decentralization, Jorgenson (political science, Aalborg U., Denmark) presents a historical analysis of the development of the Danish welfare system. His central thesis is that there are repeated, recognizable, and unique traits in the way Danish politics and administration are designed that define a profile of structures of compromise and agreement between different social and political actors. He argues that principles of labor division form the basis of role definitions and actor relations. The public institutions function as mediators between macro, micro, and collective actors in conflict. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book The New Politics of Unemployment

Download or read book The New Politics of Unemployment written by Hugh Compston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of mass unemployment in western Europe has persisted since the early 1980s. Clearly the policies implemented by national governments and the EU have not been successful in adequately tackling this important social, economic and political issue. The New Politics of Unemployment provides a thorough comparative analysis of the present situation. It looks at how the orthodox unemployment policies of contemporary governments have failed and what new policies might be introduced. A number of radical unemployment policies, from Germany, France, Italy, Britain, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland and the EU, are outlined. These are investigated with a view to identifying the conditions under which they might become standard components of national and EU strategies to bring down unemployment. This book is the first comparative study of the politics of policy innovation in the area of unemployment. It will be an important addition to the literature of European public policy and important reading for students of comparative European politics and economics.
