Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in three parts in 1902, 1904, and 1907, The Arapaho quickly established itself as a model of description of Indian culture. Its discussion of Arapaho dance andødesign provides one of the most thorough studies of Indian symbolism ever written. Alfred L. Kroeber was sent in 1899 to study the Southern Arapaho in western Indian Territory (present Oklahoma). In 1900 he lived in the camp of the Northern Arapaho in Wyoming, and in 1901 he visited the Gros Ventre, a related tribe, in Montana. He researched his subject at first hand, speaking with Arapaho men and women of all ages about their customs, beliefs, and ceremonies. The Arapaho touches upon nearly every imaginable facet of the Indians' culture. Careful attention is paid to ceremonies, games, religion and stories of the supernatural, tribal organization, kinship, decorative art and regalia, and the articles of everyday life: clothes, pottery, utensils, tens, and the all-important pipe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bungling Host motif appears in countless indigenous cultures in North America and beyond. In this groundbreaking work Daniel Clément has gathered nearly four hundred North American variants of the story to examine how myths acquire meaning for their indigenous users and explores how seemingly absurd narratives can prove to be a rich source of meaning when understood within the appropriate context. In analyzing the Bungling Host tales, Clément considers not only material culture but also social, economic, and cultural life; Native knowledge of the environment; and the world of plants and animals. Clément’s analysis uncovers four operational modes in myth construction and clarifies the relationship between mythology and science. Ultimately he demonstrates how science may have developed out of an operational mode that already existed in the mythological mind.

Book excerpt: LEFT FOR DEAD, ALL HE WANTED FROM LIFE WAS TO KILL HIS KILLERS COLDIRON COMES BACK Luke Coldiron was a hard man—but not as hard as the bullets ripping through his flesh. That's what a vicious army deserter named Jubal Clason and a renegade Indian warrior named Ghost Walker figured when they left his riddled body at the bottom of a ravine. They lifted his gold and rode off back to the mountains, where they thought they were as safe as being in church. They were wrong. Wrong about Coldiron being dead. And wrong about being safe. With a woman whose husband they had killed by his side, and with his guns cocked for killing, Coldiron was coming after them . . . ready to ride through the jaws of hell if he could blast them into it. . . . F.M. PARKER has established himself as the most exciting Western writer in years with such triumphs as Skinner, The Searcher, and, of course, the acclaimed Coldiron, in which Luke Coldiron first appeared.
