Book excerpt: Le travail rapporté dans la thèse concerne le développement et l'étude de méthodes d'estimation du canal en traitement d'antenne. Les résultats de ce travail trouvent des applications dans le domaine des radiocommunications, qui est la première application visée, mais aussi dans la radiolocalisation, le Radar et le Sonar. Après une description physique du canal de propagation multi-capteurs à trajets multiples, les différentes réponses impulsionnelles mises en jeu sont paramétrèes par les caractéristiques recherchées du canal de propagation. Nous en déduisons différentes modélisations allant de la plus fine à la plus rudimentaire. Les bornes de Cramer-Rao (BCR) pour ces différentes paramétisations sont établies de façon à montrer l'apport potentiel de modélisations élaborées.Les performances asymptotiques de l'estimateur du Maximum de Vraissemblance (MV) sont ensuite soigneusement étudiées dans un contexte où les observations ne sont pas stationnaires, et nous établissons la consistance et l'efficacité de l'estimateur du MV sous certaines hypothèses. La méthode MV est toutefois difficiel à mettre en oeuvre, et nous développons une méthode originale du MV approché MCOMET (Mean and COvariance Matching Estimation Techniques). Enfin, des simulations viennent confirmer les résultats attendus, et des expérimentations sur signaux réels mettent en évidence une très forte ŕéduction de taux d'erreurs grâce à l'utilisation du modèle structuré de canal.

Les difficultés dans ce domaine proviennent principalement de deux aspects. Premièrement, le processus d'estimation devient plus compliqué à cause de la distance réduite entre les sources et le réseau des capteurs qui induit une sphéricité du front d'onde des signaux reçus. Afin d'augmenter l'efficacité d'estimation, plusieurs nouvelles techniques sont proposées et développées. Ces méthodes, basées sur les approximations du modèle des observations, permettent de localiser les sources avec une bonne précision et une complexité réduite de calcul. Deuxièmement, les imperfections du réseau de capteurs, qui existent inévitablement dans un environnement réel, et qui dégradent considérablement les performances en estimation des positions de sources, sont considérées. Afin de minimiser leurs influences négatives sur l'estimation, les techniques de calibration d'antennes sont utilisées avec un modèle étendu en prenant en compte les différents effets indésirables. Une méthode de calibration locale, basée sur l’interpolation des données de mesures, est proposée. Cette nouvelle méthode permet d'améliorer l'efficacité de calibration sans dégrader la précision d'estimation. De plus, une nouvelle technique de la localisation des sources passives en champ proche avec un réseau MIMO est proposée, qui améliore sensiblement les performances en estimation. Cette thèse apporte des contributions à la recherche dans le domaine de la localisation de sources en champ proche. Ces différents travaux ouvrirent les voies à de nombreuses perspectives

I have broadly classified the papers into three sections under the titles of I. Propagation and Noise, II. Signal Processing and III. Post Processing. The reader will find in Section I papers on low frequency acoustic sources and effects of the medium on underwater acoustic propagation. Problems such as coherence loss due to boundary interaction, wavefront distortion and multipath transmission were addressed. Besides the medium, corrupting noise sources also have a strong influence on the performance of a sonar system and several researchers described methods of modeling these sources.
