Download or read book Compact Data Structures written by Gonzalo Navarro and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compact data structures help represent data in reduced space while allowing it to be queried, navigated, and operated in compressed form. They are essential tools for efficiently handling massive amounts of data by exploiting the memory hierarchy. They also reduce the resources needed in distributed deployments and make better use of the limited memory in low-end devices. The field has developed rapidly, reaching a level of maturity that allows practitioners and researchers in application areas to benefit from the use of compact data structures. This first comprehensive book on the topic focuses on the structures that are most relevant for practical use. Readers will learn how the structures work, how to choose the right ones for their application scenario, and how to implement them. Researchers and students in the area will find in the book a definitive guide to the state of the art in compact data structures.

Download or read book Sublinear Computation Paradigm written by Naoki Katoh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book gives an overview of cutting-edge work on a new paradigm called the “sublinear computation paradigm,” which was proposed in the large multiyear academic research project “Foundations of Innovative Algorithms for Big Data.” That project ran from October 2014 to March 2020, in Japan. To handle the unprecedented explosion of big data sets in research, industry, and other areas of society, there is an urgent need to develop novel methods and approaches for big data analysis. To meet this need, innovative changes in algorithm theory for big data are being pursued. For example, polynomial-time algorithms have thus far been regarded as “fast,” but if a quadratic-time algorithm is applied to a petabyte-scale or larger big data set, problems are encountered in terms of computational resources or running time. To deal with this critical computational and algorithmic bottleneck, linear, sublinear, and constant time algorithms are required. The sublinear computation paradigm is proposed here in order to support innovation in the big data era. A foundation of innovative algorithms has been created by developing computational procedures, data structures, and modelling techniques for big data. The project is organized into three teams that focus on sublinear algorithms, sublinear data structures, and sublinear modelling. The work has provided high-level academic research results of strong computational and algorithmic interest, which are presented in this book. The book consists of five parts: Part I, which consists of a single chapter on the concept of the sublinear computation paradigm; Parts II, III, and IV review results on sublinear algorithms, sublinear data structures, and sublinear modelling, respectively; Part V presents application results. The information presented here will inspire the researchers who work in the field of modern algorithms.

Download or read book Combinatorial Pattern Matching written by Alberto Apostolico and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained in this volume were presented at the 13th Annual S- posium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching, held July 3–5, 2002 at the Hotel Uminonakamichi, in Fukuoka, Japan. They were selected from 37 abstracts s- mitted in response to the call for papers. In addition, there were invited lectures by Shinichi Morishita (University of Tokyo) and Hiroki Arimura (Kyushu U- versity). Combinatorial Pattern Matching (CPM) addresses issues of searching and matching strings and more complicated patterns such as trees, regular expr- sions, graphs, point sets, and arrays, in various formats. The goal is to derive n- trivial combinatorial properties of such structures and to exploit these properties in order to achieve superior performance for the corresponding computational problems. On the other hand, an important goal is to analyze and pinpoint the properties and conditions under which searches cannot be performed e?ciently. Over the past decade a steady ?ow of high-quality research on this subject has changed a sparse set of isolated results into a full-?edged area of algorithmics. This area is continuing to grow even further due to the increasing demand for speed and e?ciency that stems from important applications such as the World Wide Web, computational biology, computer vision, and multimedia systems. These involve requirements for information retrieval in heterogeneous databases, data compression, and pattern recognition. The objective of the annual CPM gathering is to provide an international forum for research in combinatorial p- tern matching and related applications.
