Book Application of Electromagnetic acoustic Transducers for Nondestructive Testing in Steel Bridge Structures

Download or read book Application of Electromagnetic acoustic Transducers for Nondestructive Testing in Steel Bridge Structures written by Margarit G. Lozev and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a study to (1) assess the applicability of electromagnetic-acoustic transducers for nondestructive evaluation of stresses in bridge structures and (2) evaluate the new ultrasonic instruments as an effective technique for stress surveys in bridge structures. Field tests were performed on two bridges, one a simply supported design and the other an integral backwall bridge. Residual stress measurements were made on a vertical scanline in the web at midspan of a simply-supported bridge. Live load measurements were made by determining the normalized change in arrival times of surface waves propagating between two transducers mounted on the bottom flange. Good agreement between strain gage and ultrasonic data was obtained, both for the time-history of strain and also for the equivalent stress range. The ultrasonic equipment for live load measurements is portable and easily installed. Unlike strain gage installation, ultrasonic measurements could be made without paint removal.

Book Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers

Download or read book Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers written by Masahiko Hirao and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition provides comprehensive information on electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs), from the theory and physical principles of EMATs to the construction of systems and their applications to scientific and industrial ultrasonic measurements on materials. The original version has been complemented with selected ideas on ultrasonic measurement that have emerged since the first edition was released. The book is divided into four parts: PART I offers a self-contained description of the basic elements of coupling mechanisms along with the practical designing of EMATs for various purposes. Several implementations to compensate for EMATs’ low transfer efficiency are provided, along with useful tips on how to make an EMAT. PART II describes the principle of electromagnetic acoustic resonance (EMAR), which makes the most of EMATs’ contactless nature and is the most successful amplification mechanism for precise measurements of velocity and attenuation. PART III applies EMAR to studying physical acoustics. New measurements have emerged with regard to four major subjects: in situ monitoring of dislocation behavior, determination of anisotropic elastic constants, pointwise elasticity mapping (RUM), and acoustic nonlinearity evolution. PART IV deals with a variety of individual issues encountered in industrial applications, for which the EMATs are believed to be the best solutions. This is proven by a number of field applications.

Book Structural Materials Technology

Download or read book Structural Materials Technology written by Sreenivas Alampalli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-02-29 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth Structural Materials Technology NDT Conference was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with over sixty speakers presenting on a wide variety of topics. The goal of this conference was to inform engineers and researchers of the new nondestructive testing/nondestructive evaluation (NDT/NDE) technologies and techniques available for use in transportation construction. The use of alternative materials is challenging NDT/NDE professionals to develop new methods or modify existing techniques to address quality control, quality assurance, and long-term monitoring of structures built or strengthened with these materials. One such alternative is fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) products. This conference included papers on this topic and a panel discussion that focused on the future of NDT/NDE technologies for structures built or rehabilitated with FRP composites. These proceedings contain the 62 papers that were presented at the conference, arranged according to session number. An author index is included.

Book Optimization of Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers for Nondestructive Evaluation of Concrete Structures

Download or read book Optimization of Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers for Nondestructive Evaluation of Concrete Structures written by Siva Krishna Chaitanya Penamakuru and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are more than 130,000 prestressed concrete bridges in the United States with about 37,000 bridges being more than 30 years old. Prestressing steel strands are an important construction element used in these bridges and are critical to their performance. Presently there is no effective inspection/Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) technology for condition assessment of these prestressing strands once they are embedded in concrete. The overall goal of the research is to develop a sensor technology to detect deterioration in embedded steel strands in concrete structures. The sensor technology to be developed is an Electromagnetic Acoustic transducer (EMAT) based on the Magnetostriction effect or Joule effect. The objective of this part of the research is to maximize the efficiency of an EMAT by optimizing its design parameters in order to overcome the limitation of significant wave attenuation and low level signals that is characteristic of these sensors when embedded in concrete. Ultrasonic measurements were made in order to maximize the efficiency of EMAT by considering the influence of modifying three parameters; bias magnetic field, number of coil turns and the number of coils.

Book Electromagnetic acoustic Transducers

Download or read book Electromagnetic acoustic Transducers written by R. E. Beissner and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a brief review of those aspects of electromagnetic-acoustic generation and detection of interest in nondestructive evaluation (NDE). Since this is a developing technology, there are no standard transducer designs and practices. The principles of ultrasonic wave generation as related to electromagnetic-acoustic transducer (EMAT) design are emphasized. EMATs are of interest in NDE because they offer a completely noncontacting technique for generating and detecting ultrasonic waves. The report discusses theory, experimental studies, design, and applications of EMATs. (Author).

Book Monitoring and Safety Evaluation of Existing Concrete Structures

Download or read book Monitoring and Safety Evaluation of Existing Concrete Structures written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2003 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The condition assessment of aged structures is becoming a more and more important issue for civil infrastructure management systems. The continued use of existing systems is, due to environmental, economical and socio-political assets, of great significance and is growing larger every year. Thus the extent of necessary repair of damaged reinforced concrete structures is of major concern in most countries today. Monitoring techniques may have a decisive input to limit expenditures for maintenance and repair of existing structures. Modern test and measurement methods as well as computational mechanics open the door for a wide variety of monitoring applications. The need for quantitative and qualitative knowledge has led to the development and improvement of surveillance techniques, which have already found successful application in other disciplines such as medicine, physics and chemistry. The design of experimental test and measurement systems is inherently an interdisciplinary activity. The specification of the instrumentation to measure the structural response will involve the skills of civil, electrical and computer engineers. The main aim of fib Commission 5, Structural servicer life aspects, is to provide a rational procedure to obtain an optimal technical-economic performance of concrete structures in service and to ensure a feedback of experience gained to design, execution, maintenance and rehabilitation. Against this background fib Task Group 5.1 Monitoring and Safety Evaluation of Existing Concrete Structures had been established to evaluate the existing practice worldwide. The objective of this state-of-art report is to summarize the most important inspection and measuring methods, to describe the working process and to evaluate the applicability to structural monitoring. Particular emphasis is placed upon non-destructive systems, lifetime monitoring, data evaluation and safety aspects.

Book Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer Analysis

Download or read book Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer Analysis written by Reza Jafari and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) are non-contact, non-destructive testing devices for conducting specimens. The efficiency of EMATs is inherently low and methods for increasing it have been the subject of intense research. In publications, the finite element (FE) technique has been applied to the diffusion equation in order to model EMATs. However, electromagnetic theory indicates that the diffusion equation must be solved for the magnetic vector potential (MVP) in conjunction with an equation for the total current. An existing FE formulation considering the two equations becomes unstable when modeling transient inputs in EMAT transmitters. The limitation posed by the instability prompted the development of an improved FE formulation, which solves the two equations and is suitable for the modeling of EMATs.The objective of the research work described in this thesis is to properly and accurately model EMATs, so that their efficiency could be improved at the design stage. The thesis describes the governing equations of EMATs, improved techniques for their solution, and the application of these techniques to the analysis of such devices.
