  • Author : Fred Kraus
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-12-19
  • ISBN : 1402089465
  • Pages : 571 pages

Download or read book Alien Reptiles and Amphibians written by Fred Kraus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-19 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation of species to areas outside their native ranges has been a feature of human culture for millennia. During this time such activities have largely been viewed as beneficial or inconsequential. However, it has become increasingly clear that human-caused introductions of alien biota are an ecological disruption whose consequences rival those of better-known insults like chemical pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. Indeed, the irreversible nature of most alien-species int- ductions makes them less prone to correction than many other ecological problems. Current reshuffling of species ranges is so great that the present era has been referred to by some as the “Homogocene” in an effort to reflect the unique mag- tude of the changes being made. These alien interlopers often cause considerable ecological and economic d- age where introduced. Species extinctions, food-web disruptions, community alte- tions, ecosystem conversion, changes in nutrient cycling, fisheries collapse, watershed degradation, agricultural loss, building damage, and disease epidemics are among the destructive – and frequently unpredictable – ecological and economic effects that invasive alien species can inflict. The magnitude of these damages c- tinues to grow, with virtually all environments heavily used by humans now do- nated by alien species and many “natural” areas becoming increasingly prone to alien invasion as well. Attention to this problem has increased in the past decade or so, and efforts to prevent or limit further harm are gaining wider scientific and political acceptance.

Book Durable Strategies Dynamic Games

Download or read book Durable Strategies Dynamic Games written by David W. K. Yeung and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Durable strategies that have prolonged effects are prevalent in real-world situations. Revenue-generating investments, toxic waste disposal, long-lived goods, regulatory measures, coalition agreements, diffusion of knowledge, advertisement and investments to accumulate physical capital are concrete and common examples of durable strategies. This book provides an augmentation of dynamic game theory and advances a new game paradigm with durable strategies in decision-making schemes. It covers theories, solution techniques, and the applications of a general class of dynamic games with multiple durable strategies. Non-cooperative equilibria and cooperative solutions are derived, along with advanced topics including random termination, asynchronous game horizons, and stochastic analysis. The techniques presented here will enable readers to solve numerous practical dynamic interactive problems with durable strategies. This book not only expands the scope of applied dynamic game theory, but also provides a solid foundation for further theoretical and technical advancements. As such, it will appeal to scholars and students of quantitative economics, game theory, operations research, and computational mathematics. "Not too many new concepts have been introduced in dynamic games since their inception. The introduction of the concept of durable strategies changes this trend and yields important contributions to environmental and business applications." Dušan M Stipanović, Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign "Before this book, the field simply did not realize that most of our strategies are durable and entail profound effects in the future. Putting them into the mathematical framework of dynamic games is a great innovative effort." Vladimir Turetsky, Professor, Ort Braude College “Durable-strategies Dynamic Games is truly a world-leading addition to the field of dynamic games. It is a much needed publication to tackle increasingly crucial problems under the reality of durable strategies.” Vladimir Mazalov, Director of Mathematical Research, Russian Academy of Sciences & President of the International Society of Dynamic Games

Book Electrical Shock Safety Criteria

Download or read book Electrical Shock Safety Criteria written by J.E. Bridges and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical Shock Safety Criteria documents the proceedings of the First International Symposium on Electrical Shock Safety Criteria, held in Toronto, Canada, 7-9 September 1983. The objective was to establish the state of the art in the field of electrical shock safety criteria as applied to electrical power utilities. The symposium brought together leading experts from electrical utilities, universities, and research laboratories from around the world, interested in problems associated with electrical shock and safety. The proceedings are organized in three sections, each consisting of the morning review papers and afternoon panel discussions. Section 1 presents an in-depth analysis of the physiology of electrical shocks including such topics as body-weight scaling, electrocution equation, physiological effects of electrical current, and factors affecting fibrillation threshold. Section 2 focuses on the analysis of body impedance under various conditions and the techniques for measuring current distribution in the body. Section 3 is devoted to discussions of safety criteria and related standards from the point of view of current practices in electrical utilities.
