In this chapter you will learn how some of the ethnic groups moved from their original geographical locations to present-day Ghana after which you will move to the next chapter, which talks about birth and naming ceremony in Africa. • Author : Malte Steinbrink

  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Africa on the Move written by Malte Steinbrink and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses migration and space-spanning social network relationships as normal realities of life in African societies. It offers an overview of the research landscape and introduces an agency-centered theoretical model that provides a conceptual framework for translocality. The authors Malte Steinbrink and Hannah Niedenführ plead for a translocal approach to social transformation, showing how the translocality of livelihoods is shaping the lives of half a billion people on the continent and impacting local conditions. Using an action-oriented approach, the book analyzes the effects of translocal livelihoods on diverse aspects of economic, environmental and social change in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. The study thus makes an innovative contribution not only to migration research and development studies but also to the discussion around the policy and practice of development cooperation and planning. It is time to rethink development in light of translocal realities. The book appeals to scholars and researchers in geography, sociology, policy-making and planning, development studies, migration research and rural development.

Book Africa in Contemporary Perspective

Download or read book Africa in Contemporary Perspective written by Manuh, Takyiwaa and published by Sub-Saharan Publishers. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important feature of Ghanaian tertiary education is the foundational African Studies Programme which was initiated in the early 1960s. Unfortunately hardly any readers exist which bring together a body of knowledge on the themes, issues and debates which inform and animate research and teaching in African Studies particularly on the African continent. This becomes even more important when we consider the need for knowledge on Africa that is not Eurocentric or sensationalised, but driven from internal understandings of life and prospects in Africa. Dominant representations and perceptions of Africa usually depict a continent in crisis. Rather than buying into external representations of Africa, with its 'lacks' and aspirations for Western modernities, we insist that African scholars in particular should be in the forefront of promoting understanding of the pluri-lingual, overlapping, and dense reality of life and developments on the continent, to produce relevant and usable knowledge. Continuing and renewed interest in Africa's resources, including the land mass, economy, minerals, visual arts and performance cultures, as well as bio-medical knowledge and products, by old and new geopolitical players, obliges African scholars to transcend disciplinary boundaries and to work with each other to advance knowledge and uses of those resources in the interests of Africa's people.

Book The Darker Side of Ghana

Download or read book The Darker Side of Ghana written by Kofi Ali Abdul-Yekin and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation that drove Kofi Ali to embark on the writing of this book stemmed from the challenges he faced in his activism work. Equally, several West Africans have passionately appealed to Kofi Ali to put into writing his great ideas for generations to benefit from them, and this is just a response in honor to the appeals. The challenges of the modern day Ghana are fundamental issues that call for one-to-one understanding of the core issues. One big challenge is the confusion resulting from individuals assuming different meanings and interpretations of terminologies leading to endless arguments when serious issues are being discussed, normally ending up in frustration than solutions. Most West Africans have also developed the wrong habit of employing the locally adulterated and colloquial version of their formal national language to engage in serious discussion, while expecting others to understand them. Finally, words like culture, politics, institutions, tradition, and history are serious challenges when an average Ghanaian finds him or herself trying to make meaning out of the complications associated with the modern day Ghanaian side and the darker side of Ghana.
