Book Subsidence Above Inactive Coal Mines

Download or read book Subsidence Above Inactive Coal Mines written by J. E. Turney and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to 1977, effect of mine subsidence was not fully considered. A lack of awareness of subsidence potential, combined with urban expansion, resulted in many homes and neighborhoods being built over these old mines. Subsidence over abandoned coal mines is a potential hazard for an estimated 25,000 people and 7,500 houses along the Front Range Urban Corridor (2004 figures).

Book Investigation of land subsidence and earth fissures in Cedar Valley Iron County Utah

Download or read book Investigation of land subsidence and earth fissures in Cedar Valley Iron County Utah written by Paul Inkenbrandt and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 116-page report presents the results of an investigation by the Utah Geological Survey of land subsidence and earth fissures in Cedar Valley, Iron County, Utah. Basin-fill sediments of the Cedar Valley Aquifer contain a high percentage of fine-grained material susceptible to compaction upon dewatering. Groundwater discharge in excess of recharge (groundwater mining) has lowered the potentiometric surface in Cedar Valley as much as 114 feet since 1939. Groundwater mining has caused permanent compaction of fine-grained sediments of the Cedar Valley aquifer, which has caused the land surface to subside, and a minimum of 8.3 miles of earth fissures to form. Recently acquired interferometric synthetic aperture radar imagery shows that land subsidence has affected approximately 100 mi² in Cedar Valley, but a lack of accurate historical benchmark elevation data over much of the valley prevents its detailed quantification. Continued groundwater mining and resultant subsidence will likely cause existing fissures to lengthen and new fissures to form which may eventually impact developed areas in Cedar Valley. This report also includes possible aquifer management options to help mitigate subsidence and fissure formation, and recommended guidelines for conducting subsidence-related hazard investigations prior to development.

Book Mine Wastes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernd Lottermoser
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-04-18
  • ISBN : 3662051338
  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book Mine Wastes written by Bernd Lottermoser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's best practice in environmental mine-waste management requires a thorough understanding of the wastes produced. The knowledge of mine wastes represents a new interdisciplinary science and this book provides an introductory, descriptive and analytic overview of the wastes produced in the mineral industry. It describes the characterization, prediction, monitoring, disposal and treatment as well as environmental impacts. Intended for undergraduate courses, it systematically builds the reader’s understanding and knowledge of the wastes produced, their physical and chemical characteristics, and how to deal responsibly with them on a short and long-term basis. The text employs 22 case studies spanning the world’s mineral industry that elucidate best practice and specific challenges in mine-waste management and site rehabilitation.

Book Water Management at Abandoned Flooded Underground Mines

Download or read book Water Management at Abandoned Flooded Underground Mines written by Christian Wolkersdorfer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the processes related to mine abandonment from a hydrogeological perspective and provides a comprehensive presentation of water management and innovative tracer techniques for flooded mines. After an introduction to the relevant hydrogeochemical processes the book gives detailed information about mine closure procedures. The book also includes case studies and hints, and some new methodologies for conducting tracer tests in flooded mines.

Book Subsidence due to Fluid Withdrawal

Download or read book Subsidence due to Fluid Withdrawal written by E.C. Donaldson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-03-29 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subsidence of geologic surface structures due to withdrawal of fluids from aquifers and petroleum reservoirs is a phenomenon experienced throughout the world as the demand for water and hydrocarbons increases with increasing population growth. This book addresses the definition and theories of subsidence, and the influences of unique conditions on subsidence; it includes discussions of specific field cases and a basic mathematical model of reservoir compaction and accompanying loss of porosity and permeability. The book is designed as a reference for readers giving immediate access to the geological events that establish conditions for compaction, the mathematical theories of compaction and subsidence, and practical considerations of field case histories in various regions of the world.
