Book Animal and Vegetable Proteins in Lipid Metabolism and Atherosclerosis

Download or read book Animal and Vegetable Proteins in Lipid Metabolism and Atherosclerosis written by Michael J. Gibney and published by Alan R. Liss. This book was released on 1983 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Nine papers developed from a 1981 international workshop summarize current knowledge of the role of proteins (and amino acids) in lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis for nutritionists, clinicians, and other health professionals. The topics range from studies on lipid metabolism and experimental atherosclerosis in animals (rats, rabbits, swine), to effects of proteins on human serum lipids and lipoproteins. Other papers discuss the effects of soy protein and casein, influences of dietary protein on serum cholesterol, and the immunological aspects of atherosclerosis. The results of these studies indicate that dietary protein can make a significant contribution to atherosclerosis, that soy protein produces lower serum cholesterol levels than casein (the dynamics of which are described), and that diets containing animal protein are generally more cholesterolemic and atherogenic (in rabbits, specifically) than diets containing vegetable protein. The protein effect can be modified by other dietary components (e.g., fiber, fat). Other findings (e.g., the role of dietary protein in the immunological aspects of atherosclerosis) also are reported. (wz).

Book Methodology for the Human Sciences

Download or read book Methodology for the Human Sciences written by Donald E. Polkinghorne and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1984-06-30 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methodology for the Human Sciences addresses the growing need for a comprehensive textbook that surveys the emerging body of literature on human science research and clearly describes procedures and methods for carrying out new research strategies. It provides an overview of developing methods, describes their commonalities and variations, and contains practical information on how to implement strategies in the field. In it, Donald Polkinghorne calls for a renewal of debate over which methods are appropriate for the study of human beings, proposing that the results of the extensive changes in the philosophy of science since 1960 call for a reexamination of the original issues of this debate. The book traces the history of the deliberations from Mill and Dilthey to Hempel and logical positivism, examines recently developed systems of inquiry and their importance for the human sciences, and relates these systems to the practical problems of doing research on topics related to human experience. It discusses historical realism, systems and structures, phenomenology and hermeneutics, action theory, and the implications recent systems have for a revised human science methodology.

Download or read book Expanding Horizons in Atherosclerosis Research written by Günter Schlierf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 29 February 1964, a group of European scientists met in Paris to discuss a subject of common interest, namely atherosclerosis research, with particular reference to international communication and collaboration. After a second meeting on 15 May 1964, they founded the European Atherosclerosis Group which was to com prise individuals engaged in the various disciplines of atherosclero sis research in Eastern and Western Europe. Since then this group has initiated multidisciplinary discussion and scientific collabora tion across Europe, in accordance with the objects and aims written in its statutes: 1. To hold colloquia and symposia dealing with research in the field of atherosclerosis and allied sciences 2. To encourage meetings and exchanges between scientists in the group engaged in the investigation of atherosclerosis 3. To encourage collaborative work between national and interna tional centers engaged in atherosclerosis research 4. To encourage the publication of reviews, etc. , on atherosclerosis research which may be considered of value 5. To promote research fellowships, particularly for younger research workers, for studies within the field of atherosclerosis and allied sciences 6. To accept dues, endowments, grants, funds, and bequests to be used for the above purposes The European Atherosclerosis Group has helped to bring together what was separated during the second world war and the postwar period in Europe and to reestablish ties with the leading American teams.

Book The Future of Nutrition

Download or read book The Future of Nutrition written by T. Colin Campbell and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the coauthor of The China Study and author of the New York Times bestselling follow-up, Whole Despite extensive research and overwhelming public information on nutrition and health science, we are more confused than ever—about the foods we eat, what good nutrition looks like, and what it can do for our health. In The Future of Nutrition, T. Colin Campbell cuts through the noise with an in-depth analysis of our historical relationship to the food we eat, the source of our present information overload, and what our current path means for the future—both for individual health and society as a whole. In these pages, Campbell takes on the institution of nutrition itself, unpacking: • Why the institutional emphasis on individual nutrients (instead of whole foods) as a means to explain nutrition has had catastrophic consequences • How our reverence for "high quality" animal protein has distorted our understanding of cholesterol, saturated fat, unsaturated fat, environmental carcinogens, and more • Why mainstream food and nutrient recommendations and public policy favor corporate interests over that of personal and planetary health • How we can ensure that public nutrition literacy can prevent and treat personal illness more effectively and economically The Future of Nutrition offers a fascinating deep-dive behind the curtain of the field of nutrition—with implications both for our health and for the practice of science itself.
